  1. NASCAR levies huge penalty to Chase Briscoe, Stewart-Haas Racing by Bob Pockrass, FOX NASCAR insider NASCAR hammered Stewart-Haas Racing with one of its biggest penalties ever — including a $250,000 fine and 120 regular-season points — after it says it found a counterfeit part in the underwing of the Chase Briscoe car that it took back to its research and development center following the race Monday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. NASCAR docked Briscoe and the team 120 regular-season points and 25 playoff points and also suspended crew chief John Klausmeier for six races. The fine also is issued to Klausmeier, although typically these fines are paid by the team. Since the introduction of its Next Gen car in 2022 that requires teams to purchase most of the parts and pieces from a specific vendor, NASCAR has promised to issue severe penalties for modifying parts because the idea is that all drivers and teams have most of the same parts and pieces. Briscoe finished 20th in the race Monday and his car was one of two taken by NASCAR for teardown at its research and development center. NASCAR routinely takes a couple of cars following races to inspect. The cars taken are determined by the series director, who can have a reason or no reason to take the car. Stewart-Haas Racing chief competition officer Greg Zipadelli said the team mistakenly had the illegal part on the car for the event. "We had a quality control lapse and a part that never should’ve been on a car going to the racetrack ended up on the No. 14 car at Charlotte," Zipadelli said in a statement. "We accept NASCAR’s decision and will not appeal." NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer indicated it wasn’t an unintentional mistake on the team’s part — that the counterfeit part was a duct that runs to the engine panel and was made to look like the supplied part all the way down to the lettering. The piece the teams are supposed to use comes attached to the engine panel, Sawyer said. The duct is designed to cool areas of the car and directing air differently could enhance the performance of the car. NASCAR uses a template to check the inside of the duct and it did not meet the template. "Anything that you would do around that area would be some (performance) gain or they wouldn't have done it," Sawyer said. With the penalty, Briscoe falls from four points behind the current playoff cutoff to 124 points behind, creating a virtual must-win situation to make the playoffs. And even if he makes the playoffs, he likely will need to win in the playoffs to advance as the loss of 25 playoff points likely will put him in more must-win situations. The violation was what NASCAR considers the most serious — a Level 3 on a 1-to-3 scale. "When you counterfeit a part, it falls into a bucket with engines and messing with tires and things like fuel that is just not going to be tolerated," Sawyer said. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR for FOX Sports.

    600

NASCAR suspended Chase Elliott through the next Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway, officials announced Tuesday. In this week‘s penalty report, officials ruled Elliott intentionally crashed Denny Hamlin on Lap 186 of Monday‘s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, turning left into Hamlin‘s right-rear quarter panel and sending the No. 11 Toyota head-on into the outside SAFER barrier on the front straightaway after a squeeze from Hamlin led Elliott to brushing the wall at the exit of Turn 4. From Y! Sports: Officials cited Sections 4.3.A and 4.4.C & D of the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct laid out in the NASCAR Rule Book in Elliott‘s suspension. Section 4.3.A cites NASCAR member conduct and states “correct and proper conduct, both on and off the racetrack, is part of a member‘s responsibilities.” Section 4.4.C lists “removing another competitor from championship contention in a dangerous manner when not racing for position based on the available evidence and specific circumstances of the incident” as one of two actions that could result in a penalty, including race suspension(s). Listed as an example in the rule book is “clearly forcing another competitor into the wall in an abrupt and unambiguous manner,” while Section 4.4.D lists “actions by a NASCAR member that NASCAR finds to be detrimental to stock car racing or NASCAR” as an action that could result in a fine and/or indefinite suspension. Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, is set to miss his seventh race of the 2023 season. The 2020 Cup champion suffered a broken left leg in a snowboarding accident in March, sidelining him for six races until his return on April 16 at Martinsville Speedway. Josh Berry filled in for the five oval events Elliott missed, scoring a career-best second-place finish on April 2 at Richmond Raceway. Jordan Taylor made his Cup debut as Elliott‘s substitute at Circuit of The Americas, where he qualified fourth and finished 24th. …

  6. I'm glad folks are serious about coming up with ideas about how to save asphalt racing. A couple of points I'd like to make, if you don't mind. 1) Rules. The rules have to be very specific and very thorough for whatever class is being proposed. I mean every possible detail has to be spelled out with no room for creative rule-bending. The idea that rules should be minimal hoping to attract a wide range of cars is crazy and a recipe for failure. Racers want to win and are very inventive and willing to make their own rules unless they are clearly spelled and strictly enforced all the time. A couple of notes about rules here: A. Coming up with a comprehensive set of rules is extremely difficult. Input from a wide variety of experienced racers is mandatory. Rules made by one person end up being revised over and over as oversights and errors are needed. And rules that change frequently are not conducive to the stability of the class. B. The rules must be strictly enforced with no exceptions. And the class/track management must back the tech officials every time. 2) Low-cost classes is the key to the future success of asphalt racing - as many have pointed out. But getting these low-tech cars to handle is a major challenge for racers to overcome and racers are very inventive when it comes to getting an advantage over their fellow racers. Very strict rules about shocks, springs, suspension components and tires are a must. As soon as someone "innocently" re-mounts a suspension component to alter a roll center or gain a bump steer advantage, the class will be history. Shocks should be issued by the track and dynoed to detect any re-valving efforts. Springs should be pulled, measured and rated randomly. I've been down the rules making/enforcing road many times in the past and the above is not theory.
  7. I aways say: If someone with unlimited financial resources and a true love of racing were willing to invest without worrying about getting a return on their investment, racetracks can be reborn. I have been hoping for such an individual for many years. I seriously thought I had found that special someone shortly after San Antonio Speedway closed, but he turned out to be "too good to be true." I still have the outline of the business plan developed for a multi-venue complex on Foster Road in San Antonio. And the offer I made so long ago remains on the table: If that "someone" mentioned above comes forth, I'd be more than willing to join their team.
  8. I don't think this will end up well for NA$CAR. It's hard to capture the smell, noise, atmosphere with a camera. Just another step the leadership is taking away from their customer base.
  9. Thanks for the great updates, Ron! You're hired!

  20. MACHO MAN MAGIC: Late Race Pass at Tri-State Speedway Leads Brady Bacon to First World of Outlaws Win Bacon becomes 150th different World of Outlaws winner by capturing elusive Haubstadt victory HAUBSTADT, IN (April 29, 2023) - “The Macho Man” had plenty of time to think about it. Dream about it. Strive for it. Saturday night at Tri-State Speedway, he finally did it. Brady Bacon won his first World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car race. Trent Gower photo The Haubstadt, IN oval grandstands were packed Saturday night, but hardly a seat was used when Bacon threw a slider for the lead with less than three laps to go. The same fans that rose to their feet and roared had seen him come so close to glory at the southern Indiana bullring in the past. There was 2015 when “The Macho Man” led 32 laps before a late pass made him settle for second. The next year brought Bacon another runner-up. In 2017, Bacon was leading the Dash before getting upside down. This year there would be no heartbreak. Bacon wheeled the Kelly and Lora Hinck owned TKH Motorsports #21 from sixth to the front – sealing the deal on his inaugural World of Outlaws win with a late race pass on Series star Sheldon Haudenschild. The fans met Bacon with a thunderous roar as he climbed atop his wing in Victory Lane. Bacon cemented a place in Sprint Car history with the win. The Broken Arrow, OK native became the 150th different driver to win with The Greatest Show on Dirt. It took Bacon 65 Feature starts to get the job done as he became the 20th different driver to win at Tri-State Speedway. “I feel like I’ve had several slip through my fingers here,” Bacon said. “I haven’t raced (with the World of Outlaws) a whole lot in the last few years. Thanks for Kelly and Lora Hinck giving us the opportunity to race more so we can get in contention to win these races. I knew with my guys and the equipment we put together that if we could just race a little bit then we could win some races and win a World of Outlaws race. It’s been on my bucket list for quite a while. It was kind of my last one to check off. Glad to get it done here, and it’s fitting I get it done here where I’ve always ran really well.” The early part of the race was controlled by pole sitter and winner of the previous three Tri-State Speedway World of Outlaws races – Carson Macedo. The current Series point leader maintained the top spot throughout a flurry of stoppages in the first half of the 40-lapper while battles raged on behind him all over the track. When the second half of the race began, the action for the lead intensified. Eighth-starting Sheldon Haudenschild had driven his way into second and closed on Macedo as the duo entered traffic. On Lap 22, Haudenschild rolled the bottom of Turns 1 and 2 perfectly to secure the top spot and wasted no time checking out. Like Bacon, Haudenschild was also starved for a Tri-State triumph. Entering Saturday, the Wooster, OH native had led laps in three different World of Outlaws Features at the quarter mile but never won. The pilot of the Stenhouse Jr./Marshall Racing #17 looked as if he’d claim that elusive victory once he grabbed the top spot. Haudenschild was smooth as he sliced through lapped traffic and extended his advantage. A late red flag set up a 12 lap dash to the finish, and Bacon knew he was primed to make a move while running third. “The track was kind of coming to me, and my car was coming to me,” Bacon explained. “Starting on the inside I knew I was going to be good to get a good restart.” Getting a good restart was exactly what he did as he moved by Macedo for second and set his sights on Haudenschild with five laps remaining. Haudenschild squeezed between two lapped cars with less than four laps to go which looked as if it may have been the winning move. But in the next set of corners, Bacon utilized a perfect line to drive between the same two cars and get a run on Haudenschild down the front straightaway. Heading into Turn 1 after crossing the line with three laps to go, Bacon tossed a perfect slider to grab the lead. “Once Sheldon hit traffic there, I could kind of smell it,” Bacon said with a smirk. “I think I found that extra over-100% to make it happen and get by him. I knew he was going to get held up, and I just kind of drove the crap out of it to get there and was able to hit it right with lapped traffic. We had a really maneuverable car, probably more than anybody else, and that helped me in traffic.” After making the pass, Bacon drove away and claimed the checkered flag by more than a second. He made it official. He’ll forever be a World of Outlaws winner. Behind Bacon, Haudenschild held on to the runner-up spot – his third podium of the year in the NOS Energy Drink #17. Despite another tough pill to swallow at Tri-State, Haudenschild was in good spirits afterwards and even equipped with a sense of humor about the outcome. “Them damn Non-Wing boys got this place figured out,” Haudenschild said with a smile. “Hats off to Brady. He did a great job. We had a really good car all night. I didn’t get with it in that Dash. I should’ve been more aggressive, but I don’t think it mattered. We had a really good car, and I was able to get up through there early in that Feature.” Completing the podium was Brad Sweet aboard the Kasey Kahne Racing #49. The four-time and defending champion now owns top-fives in five of his last six races in Haubstadt. The result gave the Grass Valley, CA native sole possession of 10th on the all-time World of Outlaws podium list – breaking a tie with former teammate, Daryn Pittman. “We made a good adjustment under that open red,” Sweet said. “You hate to see open reds, but tonight we capitalized and got our car a little bit better. We were hanging on for fourth and fifth there then drove back up to third.” Completing the top five was Carson Macedo and Tyler Courtney. Courtney took a wild route to his result. After early contact with another car, “Sunshine” made a trip to the Federated Car Care Work Zone and drove through much of the field to earn the strong finish. Carson Macedo remains the championship points leader while Sweet moved into second – only 12 markers behind. Joe B. Miller earned the KSE Racing Hard Charger with a drive from 18th to eighth. 21. Berry bounces back at Hamilton County Speedway Tom Berry Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa, found redemption on the second night of the 13th Annual USMTS Spring Classic as he scored a $5,000 victory after coming up one lap short on Thursday at the historic Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa. Tyler Rinken photo With the best of the best in dirt modified racing on the grounds, the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt produced yet another thriller on a cold night at the oldest racetrack in the Hawkeye State. The second of three nights of racing saw four-time Summit USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes take the early from the outside of the from row with Berry, the polesitter, slipping back a few spots when the green flag waved. Berry eventually worked his way past some tough competition before wrestling the top spot away from Hughes with 12 laps in the books. The 28-year-old originally from Medford, Ore., led the rest of the way for his second win of the 2023 campaign. “I figured Todd (Staley) was going to cancel so we were kind of behind on tire work,” Berry said. “We had a winning car last night and it didn’t result in that, and just shows how good our team is and how consistent we are no matter what the track conditions.” One night earlier, Berry collided with Ebert and then took the lead with seven laps remaining. Ebert returned the favor with an aggressive slide-job on the final lap to steal the win. “My dad just taught me from a young age to speak with your steering wheel and beat him on the track. It didn’t turn out our way and there’s no reason to bad mouth someone in that incident—we were just racing hard. It is what it is and we moved past it. If you hold on to it you’re not worrying about tonight. “I wasn't even thinking I was going to run after qualifying and we just dug down. You really just had to know where to be on the track to maneuver and I feel like I was maneuvering better and all these guys, and just maybe a little younger and a little bit more in shape,” Berry said with a smile. The finish of Friday night’s feature looked like the next-to-last lap of Thursday’s as Ebert came across the line in second place behind Berry. Hughes held on to finish third while Will Krup bested another four-time champ, Rodney Sanders, for fourth after a great battle between those two. Darron Fuqua came from 13th to get sixth at the stripe, but Brandon Givens earned the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award after racing to a seventh-place paycheck after rolling off 19th on the 24-car grid. Although he passed more cars than Givens, 24th-starting Zack VanderBeek had to use a provisional starting spot making him ineligible for hard charger honors, but ‘The Z-Man’ made the most of it by finishing eighth. Dereck Ramirez and Alex Williamson rounded out the top t10. Racing continues Saturday at the Hamilton County Speedway with the fire-breathing Outlaw Modifieds of the Summit USMTS National Championship competing for $10,000 to top tomorrow night’s finale.
