  2. Hungry Wolff whoops USMTS field at 81 Speedway The Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt was back at the 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., for a second night of the inaugural Ed Gressel Memorial on Friday, and Tyler Wolff was back in flawless form as he notched his second wire-to-wire triumph of the 2023 campaign. Tyler Rinken photo Several of his chasers stayed close early on but Wolff always found an extra burst of speed whenever anybody got close. Yellow flags on laps 13 and 22 wiped out his lead on two occasions, but both kept him from having to deal with a swarm of soon-to-be lapped cars. Thursday’s winner, Tanner Mullens, and Cayden Carter kept Wolff in their sights but neither threatened the rim-riding Wolff for the lead. That all changed after the second restart when Rodney Sanders powered around the high side of the 3/8-mile dirt oval to jump from sixth to second in less than a lap. From there, Sanders stayed within striking distance of Wolff, finally making a charge with two laps to go. ‘The Rocket’ peaked underneath Wolff’s No. 4W Lobo Racing machine but Gary Christian’s broken ride sitting at the top of turn 2 forced the race’s third yellow flag to wave. Two more quick cautions occurred but on each occasion Wolff drove away from Sanders, eventually taking the checkers with about a five-car-length cushion over the four-time Summit USMTS National Champion. Despite starting third, Wolff led all 35 laps and pocketed the $5,000 winner’s share of the prize money. “I am a mess, I am wore out but that's a good run there,” an elated Wolff said in victory lane. “I knew that start would be critical and thought I’d had to take advantage of it. I gotta thank (Jimmy) Mars and ECE Racing Engines. We put a different engine in it and this thing screams. We’ve been having to tone it down all weekend. “I trust Rodney very well and know that he’s not going to do anything crazy. He’s a teammate of mine so I really appreciate that, but it was awesome to see him up around behind me. It made me happy I knew that we had two good MB cars. and that’s good.” RacinDirt co-owner/pit reporter Trenton Berry advised Wolff to get a designated driver if he went anywhere after his victory celebration because no Kansas State Trooper would believe he hadn’t been drinking. “I got enough for bail, we’re good,” replied Wolff, who was soaked with warm Coors Light—one of Ed Gressel’s favorite beverages. With the win, Wolff now has four at four racetracks in four states. He’s the first two-time winner this season and the 16th different winner in the 27 USMTS main events held at the 81 Speedway. Behind Sanders, Jake O'Neil crossed the finish line third with Carter finishing fourth and Dereck Ramirez taking the checkers in fifth. Mullens, Tom Berry Jr., Terry Phillips, Tanner Black and Darron Fuqua completed the top 10. After finishing second in the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash, Ramirez had the chance to start on the outside of Mullens on the front row when Mullens turned down the cash bonus, but the 2021 Summit USMTS National Champion opted to take $1,250 and start sixth, putting O’Neil in the second starting spot next to Mullens. On Saturday, the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash is worth $1,000 with special thanks to Rock Island Recycling, Duvall Electric and McCowan Farms. Racing continues Saturday with the Gressel Memorial finale that will see no less than $10,000 going to the winner. The JLR Property Management 316 A-Mods and AutoTech Service Super Stocks join the on-track action. With his efforts Friday night, Wolff becomes the new points leader heading into Saturday’s finale and will bolt on the coveted dayglo orange Weiland Points Leader spoiler for tomorrow’s show. O’Neil jumped to second and Hughes slipped to third after sitting atop the rankings since the second event of the season. Phillips and Fuqua round out the top five. For complete event information, check out the FAST FACTS or visit 81speedway.com. • 81 Speedway will host a Cornhole Tournament and silent auction for door panels on Saturday. Winners will receive cornhole boards as prizes. Click here to register. Space is limited. The cost is $50 per team and the tournament starts at 10 a.m. for more information call (316) 304-1454 or email 81speedwayevents@gmail.com. • VP Racing Fuels-Heartland is adding incentives to driver's in Saturday's main event. If the driver who starts 2nd wins, hey will get an extra $200 in honor of the Gressel Racing No. 2G driven by Brandon Givens. If the driver who starts 19th wins, he will get an extra $1,900 in honor of the No. 19R driven by Ryan Gustin. If the driver who starts 25th wins, he will get an extra $2,500 in honor of the No. 25 driven by Scott Green. • The Ed Gressel Memorial features a special one-of-a-kind victory lane banner. The 10x20 sign will be autographed by USMTS drivers, and then after Saturday's finale one lucky person will take the banner home. Proceeds will go to the choice of Ed's widow Cinde Gressel. Bidding started Thursday. • Adam Gressel will offer a $1,000 cash award for Saturday's hard charger, which could make it a total of $1,100 for the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award. • Even more 'Reaper Madness' ensues as Chris Sutton with the RPM Speedway in Hays, Kan., has a crisp $100 bill for the 19th-place finisher in honor of the Gressel Racing No. 19R driven by Gustin, who garnered two Summit USMTS National Championships while driving for Gressel Racing. 4. Mullens hits home run in USMTS Ed Gressel Memorial opener Tanner Mullens of Wichita got the better of polesitter Will Krup on the opening lap as the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt kicked off the opening night main event of the inaugural Ed Gressel Memorial at the 81 Speedway. Tyler Rinken photo A caution on the fourth lap slowed the pace early on, but from there it was green flag racing with Mullens distancing himself from Krup, who gave way to Jeremy Nelson for the second spot on lap 10. A flat tire for Nelson with four laps to go gave Mullens plenty of padding to cruise to his first USMTS win at his home track, but a flat tire on the VanderBuilt Race Car of Cayden Carter—last year’s Grant Junghans USMTS Rookie of the Year—with just two laps to go set a new tone for the final two-lap sprint to the end. Mullens, 30, who was the top USMTS rookie in 2020, had no problems with the restart as he sailed to a margin of victory of more than two seconds over Jake Timm, who snagged the runner-up spot from Krup at the finish line after Krup also blew a tire just before he crossed beneath the checkered flags. The win was worth $3,000 to Mullens—a three-time Hutchinson Nationals winner and 2017 NCRA champion. It was his first at 81 Speedway but the eighth of his career, tying him with Brandon Davis, Ryan Ruter, Tommy Weder Jr. and another former driver for Gressel Racing, Ricky Thornton Jr., on the all-time USMTS wins list. It was the 26th USMTS feature hosted by the 81 Speedway with Mullens becoming the 15th different winner. After turning down $500 earlier after finishing second in the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash, it appeared Mullens made the right decision. “The luck we’ve been having I didn’t want to put ourselves any further behind,” Mullens said in victory lane. “Obviously got to keep your right rear under you and when I got to lapped traffic I just kind of left a gap there in case somebody got beside me, but I just didn't want to push it and get tangled up in there. After going two-for-two last weekend in the Sooner State with a win at the Red Dirt Raceway during the American Racer USRA Modified Series event, and then a dominating triumph in the USRA Modified season opener at the Longdale Speedway on Saturday, Mullens is in a Gressel-like groove for the next two nights. “He kind of gave me my first taste to running USMTS and I’ll forever be grateful for that,” Mullens said of Ed Gressel who passed away last May and was a fixture at the 81 Speedway. “He was a really good guy and we’re all going to miss him.” Behind Mullens, Timm and Krup it was Tom Berry Jr. and Zack VanderBeek completing the first five to the finish line. Sixth through tenth went to Jake O'Neil, six-time 81 Speedway winner Rodney Sanders, Terry Phillips, Jim Chisholm and Jason Hughes. Both Krup and Mullens turned down $500 to start sixth in the main event after finishing first and second in the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash, so Friday’s value climbs to $1,250 ($750 plus $500 carried over). The same rules and procedures apply on Saturday where the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash is worth $1,000, but if Friday’s money is unclaimed then Saturday’s prize increases to a $2,250 dangling carrot. The inaugural Ed Gressel Memorial continues Friday with a top prize of $5,000 up for grabs with JLR Property Management 316 A-Mods and AutoTech Service Super Stocks making up the undercard. Saturday’s finale will see no less than $10,000 going to the winner with the Heyglassman.com Stock Cars joining the show with the Summit USMTS Modifieds. Joe Wright—a former crew member for Gressel Racing—put up $800 for long-distance travelers with $200 each to the farthest from each direction. The winners were Dan Ebert of Lake Shore, Minn. (776 miles north), Billy Jack Brutchin of Gladewater, Texas (487 miles south), Chase Holland, Success, Miss. (862 miles east) and Kelsie Foley of Tucson, Ariz. (1,017 miles west). Foley won the overall MVT Long Tow Award and an extra $100 for gas money. If the driver who starts 25th wins, he will get an extra $2,500 in honor of the No. 25 driven for Ed Gressel by Scott Green. • The Ed Gressel Memorial features a special one-of-a-kind victory lane banner. The 10x20 sign will be autographed by USMTS drivers, and then after Saturday's finale one lucky person will take the banner home. Proceeds will go to the choice of Ed's widow, Cinde Gressel. Bidding starts Thursday. • Adam Gressel will offer a $1,000 cash award for Saturday's FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award winner, which makes the award worth a total of $1,100 for the most prolific passer in the feature race. Thursday's FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award went to Chisholm who started 16th and finished 9th. 5. It's Jason Martin At The Line With The American Sprint Car Series At Jackson Motor Speedway by Bryan Hulbert BYRAM, Miss. (April 20, 2023) - Winner in the final race of the 2022 season to winning the 2023 season opener for the American Sprint Car Series, Thursday's showdown at Jackson Motor Speedway came down to the line for Jason Martin, who held off Seth Bergman at the by 0.049-seconds. Charles Young photo “I’m pretty excited. That was a hell of a finish,” stated Martin. “Definitely wish I was better there towards the end. That restart with fifteen to go, I already had the wing in the trunk, so I was holding on for dear life the last half of that.” Fending off the last-lap charge of Seth Bergman, the No. 23 pounded the cushion at both ends of the Jackson Motor Speedway through the final six-lap run. Chasing Landon Britt for silver the first 15 laps, the No. 10 put the left-side tires to the sky momentarily and left the door open. Stalking Martin into traffic numerous times, only to have a caution clear the way for the No. 36; the final caution came on Lap 24. Rushing the top on the restart in one and two, Martin switched low in three and four. Varying his approach to the cushion, Bergman found the run with two to go. Putting the Hoosiers on the curb off the final turn, the pair shot the line in a photo finish. Landon Britt held on for third, with Howard Moore earning the KSE Hard Charger Award with an eight-spot run to fourth. Brandon Anderson completed the top five. Dale Howard, Jordon Mallett, Kyler Johnson, Matt Covington, and Chase Howard made up the top ten. The Thursday field included 21 drivers. AR Dyno Specialty Heat Race wins went to Landon Britt, Jason Martin, and Jordon Mallett. The high-point driver of the night was Matt Covington. All drivers advanced to the A-Feature. A track record was established by Koty Adams in the Dustin Gates owned No. 6 at 14.154-seconds. The next outing for the American Sprint Car Series is Saturday, April 22 at Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La. The 2023 season will mark the 32nd year of competition for the American Sprint Car Series. Spearheaded by the American Sprint Car Series National Tour, the ASCS Nation includes Regional Tours that encompass both wing and non-wing competition. When making it to the track is not an option, the series can be found on http://www.floracing.com, and is included in the platform’s $150 a year subscription plan. 8. Some folks race for the ego rush they obtain by winning - or "almost" winning. The thrill of winning or almost winning (if only this or that, I would have won) is truly addicting. Like any addiction, some racers will do just about anything for the next fix - including bending the rules and/or forcing the track management to allow expensive components. Others hire expensive shock specialists, not-so-expensive suspension gurus and truly expensive engine geniuses, which is even more expensive that ordering the latest "must have" part. And as the track management gives in to the threats of boycotts, promises to financially support the track, and/or social media pressure for better parts, safer equipment and aftermarket stuff that will "save the racer in the long run," the cost of being competitive in that class becomes something only the truly addicted can afford. Then the cycle begins again with a replacement "low buck" division. Like Mike, I have seen this pattern over and over as I'm sure you have too. The only cure is for track management to have enough financial stability (and will power) to just say "no" to the demands and hold to the spirit of the original affordable class. Nick

  12. In the Xfinity series Brett Moffitt finished 9th in the AM racing entry, one of AM Racing's better finishes this season. Kaden Honeycutt's debut in the Xfinity series did not go so well. His engine overheated and he ended up dead last. Kaden pulled double duty in the Roper Racing Team truck but finished 28th after suffering handling issues most of the race. AM Racing's Truck entry in the Truck event had Stephen Mallozzi behind the wheel. He ended up in last place. Meanwhile, Memphis Villarreal brought his Truck ride home in one piece and on the lead lap to finish 24th. Did I miss anyone?
  13. Brad Sweet Tops Wild Race at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 Sweet continues recent stretch of dominance at the Pevely bullring PEVELY, MO (April 14, 2023) - Brad Sweet doesn’t need any help reaching Victory Lane at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55, but that’s exactly what he got Friday night. Trent Gower photo The four-time and defending champion took advantage of some contact between Carson Macedo and David Gravel to top the 40-lap Feature at the Pevely, MO bullring. It’s Sweet’s third win in the first 13 races of the season, marking the fifth time the Grass Valley, CA native have reached that mark in his illustrious career. The Kasey Kahne Racing driver also continued to add to his incredible record at I-55. Sweet now owns six triumphs at the third mile, making it tied for the track he’s won at the most. He’s now on a streak of eight consecutive podiums at the facility and owns a 1.75 average finish over that stretch. Sweet’s 82nd career victory with The Greatest Show on Dirt brings him within two of tying Stevie Smith for 10th all-time. His 264th podium equaled him with Daryn Pittman for the 10th most all-time top-threes. “Just happy to get the Napa Auto Parts car in Victory Lane,” Sweet said. “Hats off to my guys. We’ve been incredibly consistent and good here at Pevely. Hopefully tomorrow we can come back and do it again. We’ve just got to make a few improvements. I just can’t thank them enough. We’ve had a rough few nights, and a good rebound here tonight gives us a little confidence coming back tomorrow.” Early in the race, the battle up front quickly brewed between David Gravel and Carson Macedo as the latter slipped by Sweet early on for second while Gravel paced the field. An early restart saw Gravel and Macedo drive side by side for multiple laps, Gravel around the cushion and Macedo stuck to the bottom. Eventually, Gravel pulled ahead in the Big Game Motorsports #2 but not for long. As the leaders entered traffic at the halfway mark, Macedo closed in fast. The Jason Johnson Racing pilot rolled by Gravel for the top spot as he struggled with a slower car. In the next corner, Gravel reclaimed the lead with a slide job. Drama arose only a couple of laps later when Gravel slid slightly above the preferred bottom groove in Turns 3 and 4, giving Macedo an opportunity. Macedo drove in hard, but as he drew alongside Gravel, he drifted up and into the side of Gravel’s machine. The contact sent Gravel around in a 360 and flattened his left rear. Macedo managed to maintain control and keep his car in tact but fell back to third for the ensuing restart based on the timing of the yellow flag. The incident gifted the lead to Sweet. “Not sure what happened with David,” Sweet explained of his viewpoint. “Luckily, that corner, I went to the top and came out in the lead. I wasn’t sure what happened. I think Carson and David maybe got into each other fighting for that bottom. The bottom really became the dominant lane, and you really couldn’t pass lapped cars up high. It was just a lot of fighting for position.” Macedo took to social media after the race to claim responsibility and apologize, saying he would never intentionally wreck someone, especially a competitor so close to him in points. While some good fortune might’ve helped Sweet get the lead, he proved he deserved to run there by pulling away following the restart with 14 laps to go. Behind Sweet, battles broke out all over the track including for the runner-up spot. Macedo, James McFadden, and Logan Schuchart all began swapping sliders as the laps dwindled and Sweet distanced himself. Ultimately, Sweet took the checkered flag with more than a two second advantage. After Sweet it was James McFadden completing a thrilling charge from 14th to second for his third podium of the season aboard the Roth Motorsports #83. The effort elevated his top-three career total to 39. “We got up in the top-10 there early and then got put in the fence on corner entry,” McFadden recalled. “We fell back to about 18th or 20th and fought our way back there. I felt like it got really, really slow down there on the bottom in (Turns) three and four, and I thought, ‘Well, why not? Let’s have a crack, got nothing to lose.’ Then I started picking cars off up there, so hats off to my Roth Motorsports guys. They gave me a really good car all night.” Completing the top-three was Shark Racing’s Logan Schuchart. The Hanover, PA native earned a podium for the first time since Florida. It marked his 122nd Series podium, equaling him with his grandfather, Bobby Allen, on the all-time list. “It’s just nice to get our guys on the podium,” Schuchart said. “They’ve been working really hard. I knew coming into this place that it’s a place where we’ve run in the top-five a lot, won the Ironman. We can get ourselves on the podium, but it seems like we can’t win races, but we’re close.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars return to Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 on April 15 for night two of the I-55 Outlaw Showdown. 20. Memphis Villarreal to make first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series career start at Martinsville Mooresville, North Carolina (April 11, 2023) - Up and coming racing star, Memphis Villarreal will make his NASCAR debut this weekend for G2G Racing at the Martinsville Speedway. “I couldn’t be happier with the decision to work with Memphis,” owner Tim Viens said of naming Villarreal as the driver for the team’s No. 46 entry. “He is a very talented driver and we are all excited to have him behind the wheel for us at Martinsville.” Although Villarreal will make his NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series debut, he is no stranger to racing. The now 21 year old started his racing career at a young age, running Bandeleros, as part of the INEX Series. In only his first season, in a limited number of starts, finished 2nd in championship points, achieving multiple Top-3 finishes in only nine starts. This also earned him Rookie of the Year honors. He quickly jumped to pro late models, modifieds, and even making starts in the Allison Legacy Series, quickly visiting Victory Lane. This would become a staple of his racing career, recording wins across the lower levels of NASCAR, running multiple classes across the south. Fast forward to 2022, where he has recorded over 30 wins, along with a multitude of Top-3 and Top-10 finishes that caught the eyes of NASCAR owners, including Viens with G2G Racing. When he is not behind the wheel at a race track, Villarreal coaches drivers of all ages, by teaching the many aspects of racing; such as lines, passing, and strategies. He also believes that if he is going to race the cars, he must also know how to work on them. Therefore, he first came to G2G Racing as a mechanic and road crew for the team. “I’m pretty excited to be a part of G2G, and am so thankful to (Tim) Viens and (Tim) Sliva for this opportunity,” Villarreal said about being named for Martinsville. “I am looking forward to this seeking and am hoping to bring the No. 46 home clean with a decent finish.” He will carry the S&S Fishing and Rental and Lalos Auto Repair colors on the truck for his first career start. Look for him in the team’s No. 46 Tundra this weekend at the Martinsville Speedway.
  21. Cody Ware arrested on felony 'assault by strangulation' charge, suspended indefinitely by NASCAR by Andrew Chapados, Blaze News April 11, 2023 - NASCAR Cup Series driver Cody Ware was arrested and charged with felony assault by strangulation inflicting serious injury, resulting in his indefinite suspension by NASCAR, according to Fox News. Ware was arrested in his home state of North Carolina around 10:30 a.m. on April 10, 2023, and charged with misdemeanor assault on a female in addition to the felony charge. Ware was later released on a $3,000 bond. The arrest reportedly stems from an alleged domestic violence incident that took place in Mooresville, N.C., just before midnight on April 3, 2023. It was originally reported that the driver would miss his most recent race to “focus on a personal matter,” according to a statement by his team, Rick Ware Racing. The racing team, which is owned by the 27-year-old's father, released a statement on Twitter regarding the matter. "We are aware of the incident regarding Cody Ware and his indefinite suspension from NASCAR competition. We understand NASCAR’s position on this matter and accept their decision," the racing team said. "The matter is still under investigation and Cody is fully cooperating with the authorities, as due process takes its course. [Rick Ware Racing] is committed to continuing our multi-car efforts in the NASCAR Cup Series and is in the process of finalizing our plans for the No. 51 entry at Martinsville Speedway, and beyond," they added. According to ESPN, there were no weapons involved in the incident, and details of the assault have not been made available because it was a domestic violence situation. Ware is currently ranked 31st in the Cup Series standings. He has raced in the series since 2017. His best finish is sixth place over 97 career races.

  23. RICO ROLLS: Rico Abreu Banks $20,000 with Jason Johnson Classic Victory Abreu continues hot start with second win in seven starts WICHITA, KS (April 8, 2023) - The 81 Speedway fans roared as a victorious Rico Abreu climbed atop his wing and held up four fingers on one hand and a single finger on the other. The St. Helena, CA native was signaling his support to the man everyone showed up to salute Saturday night, Jason Johnson. Abreu led the entirety of the fifth Jason Johnson Classic, holding off a late rally by Carson Macedo to seal the win and $20,000 payday. The trip to Victory Lane at the Wichita, KS track was his second with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars in 2023 through only seven starts. It’s the first time since 2018 that Abreu has claimed multiple World of Outlaws Features in the same season. The 31-year-old is now up to 11 triumphs with The Greatest Show on Dirt. With Bobbi and Jaxx Johnson joining Abreu in his celebration on the front stretch in front of filled grandstands, emotion swelled for Abreu as he soaked in one of his most meaningful career victories. “These wins become really emotional when you get up here on the front straightaway in front of a packed house and in front of Jaxx,” Abreu said, patting Jason’s son on the shoulder. “It’s a very cherishing moment for my team and I. We’re all our here racing for Jason Johnson’s legacy.” Early on Abreu announced he would be tough to beat as he snatched the lead from the outside of the front row when the green flag flew. Behind him Carson Macedo and David Gravel began a war for the runner-up spot with Gravel securing it just before a yellow flag flew. The opening stage of the race became marred by stoppages including one for championship point leader, Brad Sweet, as he was involved in a multi-car incident entering Turn 1. The four-time and defending champion was able to make repairs and rejoin. Officials made the decision to utilize single file restarts for the remainder of the main event after the early issues, and it paid off as the yellow flag would not fly again for the balance of the race. Once the race established a rhythm, Abreu pulled ahead on a clear track, and even in early parts of navigating traffic, Abreu kept two of the country’s best in Macedo and Gravel safely behind. Abreu credited his team, led by Ricky Warner, and their growing chemistry for the speed of his #24 machine. “It all comes down to my team. They do an amazing job,” Abreu said. “Ricky, his critical thinking, and the way Zack adapts to Ricky’s thinking, and how Brady works through and processes things. It’s so cool to see.” Late in the going, Abreu was forced to fend off a late challenge from the man wheeling the Jason Johnson Racing ride, Macedo. The Lemoore, CA native found some speed on the very top of Turns 1 and 2 and used it to close on Abreu as the laps waned. Abreu crossed the start/finish line with two to go and made a decision he seldom had all race – going to the bottom of Turn 1. This allowed Macedo to get an even bigger run on the cushion and close quickly exiting Turn 2. As they screamed down the back straightaway, Macedo ducked low with hopes of throwing a slider in turn three. But Abreu protected the spot and didn’t allow Macedo to edge ahead. The JJR #41 slipped up the track mid-corner, allowing Abreu to pull away with the white flag in his sights. When the checkered flag flew, Abreu’s advantage had grown back to nearly a second as he became the eighth different winner at 81 Speedway through 14 Series visits and the fifth different winner of the Jason Johnson Classic. “I knew the #41 was behind me because of the scoreboard on the front stretch, and I knew he was giving it all he had,” Abreu explained. “It’s the style of Carson racing. So, just to be up here and racing in front of the best Sprint Car fans in the world is an unbelievable feeling.” Macedo wound up second, marking his third consecutive podium. The recent consistency paid off in elevating him into the points lead. While Macedo wanted more than anything to park the JJR ride in Victory Lane for the Jason Johnson Classic, he still walked away with his head held high with a second-place effort and sitting atop the standings. “It would’ve been really cool to park the Jason Johnson Racing car in Victory Lane at Jason Johnson’s race, but nevertheless we were on the podium again and had a solid night,” Macedo said. “At the end there I gave it everything I had and then some to try and win it.” Rounding out the top-three was Watertown, CT’s David Gravel. The Big Game Motorsports driver was strong during all 30 laps, even claiming the runner-up spot on multiple occasions, before taking home third. The effort equaled him with Brad Sweet (6) for the most podiums this season. He also moved into second in the standings. “It was a good effort,” Gravel said. “I wish Carson didn’t get by me there right after that red flag and then I maybe could’ve had a shot at Rico because Rico was searching quite a bit in (turns) one and two.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars are heading to Pevely, MO for a pair of nights (April 14-15) at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55. 24. MISSOURI MASTERPIECE: Sheldon Haudenschild Tops Barn Burner at U.S. 36 Raceway Haudenschild gives his father a fitting birthday gift OSBORN, MO (April 7, 2023) - On Friday night at U.S. 36 Raceway, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars delivered a gem that fans will be talking about for years to come. A race-long war for the top spot produced slider after slider and crossover after crossover along with one unforgettable three wide pass around the outside. Once the dust settled at the Osborn, MO oval, it was Sheldon Haudenschild who arose victorious after a 30-lap donnybrook against fellow stars – Carson Macedo, David Gravel, and Brad Sweet. Trent Gower photo The triumph marked his 32nd win with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars and second consecutive at U.S. 36 after topping the 2020 race. In fitting fashion, Haudenschild also won on his father, Jac’s, birthday. The Stenhouse Jr./Marshall Racing gasser made his dad proud by winning in the wild, white-knuckle fashion “The Wild Child” became famous for. Haudenschild is now only the second driver to top multiple World of Outlaws races at U.S. 36, joining Joey Saldana. It’s the seventh different track where he’s earned at least two Series victories. For Haudenschild and the team, who had been combating some early season struggles, the triumph also served as a welcome confidence boost. “Happy Birthday to my dad. He was probably pacing around the kitchen there for a while,” Haudenschild said with a laugh in Victory Lane. “Hats off to (Kyle) Ripper, Danny, Gravy. They’ve been working hard, and when you struggle to start the season, it’s tough. You’ve got to keep your spirits up and keep the whole team motivated. So, I’m just really happy with the whole night.” The early part of the race was controlled by Carson Macedo as he darted to the lead from the second starting spot and Haudenschild slotted into second. Macedo went mostly unchallenged for the first third of the race, but after the second of a pair of debris cautions, the intensity of the fight for the lead skyrocketed. David Gravel went from fourth to second on the restart and then briefly to the lead on the next circuit before Macedo slid back by. Then the next lap brought a move from Haudenschild that the entire Sprint Car community will fondly remember for a while. As Macedo and Gravel went wheel to wheel through Turns 3 and 4, Haudenschild ripped his NOS Energy Drink #17 around the top, making it three wide and squeezing by for the lead as they hit the front straightaway. “I actually hesitated, thought about not doing it, and then just kind of sent it,” Haudenschild explained. “I actually kind of shot down the front stretch there. I was pretty much doing a wallride and just happy Carson left us enough room to squeeze through there. I feel like that’s kind of how you have to race these places sometimes – just get your elbows up and let ‘er eat.” As soon as Haudenschild took the lead, the Wooster, OH native wasted no time pulling ahead of Macedo and the rest of the field. A yellow flag just before the halfway point rekindled the battle for the top spot. On the restart, Haudenschild and Macedo traded sliders before Macedo secured the position. On the next restart following a red flag, eighth-starting Brad Sweet emerged as a contender for the win as he moved by Haudenschild for the runner-up spot. The Kasey Kahne Racing pilot stayed close behind Macedo before the caution again flew with only nine laps remaining. The yellow was for championship leader Gravel who crashed entering Turn 1 and collected Spencer Bayston. The short dash to the checkered flag set the stage for a thrilling finish. When racing resumed, Sweet threw a slider but Macedo barely got around him on the top. On the next lap, Sweet’s slide job was successful, but Macedo turned his Jason Johnson Racing #41 under Sweet and edged ahead entering Turn 3. Behind them, Haudenschild was licking his chops as the two ahead dueled, allowing him to close in on their tail tanks. On Lap 24, Haudenschild dipped under Sweet for second heading down the backstretch. Then on the next circuit heading into Turn 1, he threw a huge slider on Macedo, clearing him and not allowing Macedo to crossover. After completing the pass for the lead, Haudenschild pulled away and went on to claim the checkered flag with nearly a second and a half advantage, kicking off a stretch of the calendar that they’ve had circled in the best way possible. “Ripper and I have been looking at the schedule and kind of been pointing at this weekend and on,” Haudenschild said. “I feel like we really have some tracks that we’re good at and have some work to do in some other places. But, overall I’m just happy to get a win pretty early in the season and just build off this.” Macedo held on for second in the Jason Johnson Racing #41 after leading 18 laps. The Lemoore, CA native’s second straight podium and the 71st of his career was good enough to move him from third to second in points. “Tonight was probably really exciting to be a fan but stressful for me in the car,” Macedo said with a smile. “Brad kind of got me talked out of the top, which was a mistake, I think. And then when I moved down, Sheldon ripped around me. I feel like, all in all, it’s tough to be upset with second, but I feel like I had a car to win there and just kind of didn’t get it done.” Completing the podium was the red-hot Brad Sweet in the Napa Auto Parts #49. “The Big Cat” is now at six podiums in the last eight races. The biggest benefit to his 263rd career podium was the fact that it elevated him into the points lead for the first time all season after Gravel’s issue as Sweet pursues a fifth consecutive championship. “I wish when I slid Carson, I would’ve been more committed to it,” Sweet admitted. “I figured I had him cleared, but I never want to run into anybody. So, I left a lane open, and he came to my inside. I think if I would’ve got to the cushion, I could’ve made more speed down the backstretch and cleared him. And with clear track, you never know what I could’ve done in lapped traffic, but I left a lane open for Sheldon, and he just picked his way through like Sheldon does sometimes.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars travel to 81 Speedway in Wichita Kansas on Saturday, April 8 for the $20,000 to win Jason Johnson Classic.
