  6. I love big season-ending races. I hope they all have great weather, big car counts and lots of spectators.
  7. Promoters have their hands full, that's for sure. But, like Jay, it boggles my mind to think that tracks would not take advantage free access to folks who already have a vested interest in short track racing. Yes, yes, yes, I know that FB took over the social media world and left the forum world in the dust, but LSSZ is still useful and has a ton of Texas short track racing history in the current and archived forums. The LSSZ forums still generate lots of hits, mostly from folks who don't log on and have no intention of posting anything. They just want to: 1) look up something in the 20+ years of posts that are 100% searchable here on Lone Star SpeedZone, or 2) see what's happening in the racing world in Texas. Then there is a core of LSSZ members who post here regularly and enjoy the discussions in the forums or use the free classifieds. I think that if the South Texas tracks were to appoint someone to post their stuff here, we all would benefit. Nick
  8. I have offered LSSZ to any promoter/owner/track manager who chooses to utilize it. They know it's here, They also know that the forum is highly moderated for bashing, foul language, etc. and is a safe place to post (unlike Facebook). We have many folks who come here hoping to avoid going to Facebook or having to go to each area track's website for information. It is sad that they leave disappointed when the tracks don't have someone keep us up to date. I am unable to chase down each of the area tracks every day searching for their current information and act as their official LSSZ PR representative. Each track should have someone post here everyday if they are truly interested in getting the word out about their events. Nick
  9. Owen may recall that there was an effort to get the asphalt Texas short tracks together back in the day. It failed when one track decided to go their own way. I applaud these South Texas dirt tracks for pulling this off. Here's hoping 2024 sees more cooperation amongst these tracks.
  10. If Devils Bowl is indeed history, this is tragic news. The Bowl's future seemed secure and its fan base was faithful and supportive. Frankly, if this iconic track has succumbed to the times, the future of short track racing in Texas has taken a major hit.
  11. Stock car Racers (and their team members) are typically highly competitive, goal-driven and, quite often, addicted to the adrenal rush associated with high-stakes competition. The goal is to win while not pissing off too many of their fellow competitors and sanctioning officials. While some may actually seek to add to the collective good of the racing organization and its members as a whole, that is usually not the case - at least in my experience as a race official for many, many years. Frankly, expecting racers to self-police for the good of the whole is not a realistic plan - never has been, never will be. The late Neil Upchurch was a hardhead dictator who ran the most successful stock car racing program that Texas has ever known. He ran the TIDA like he was King of the World and took no gruff from anyone. He made the rules and if you didn't like them, well, too bad. He did not cave to the wishes of the well-financed teams or the front-runners. If you questioned Neil's authority, you were likely to find yourself looking for somewhere else to race. He demanded respect and got it because he was consistently going by his rules no matter what anyone thought. He did take advice from a select few folks (I was one of those), but you had to be willing to follow Neil's decisions no matter what. If not, you were gone. I left his team after he ignored my advice one to many times. Love him or hate him, Neil ran a tight ship and his racing ventures were all very successful. The point is that it takes a strong leader with no vested interest in any particular race team, an in-depth knowledge of the sport (including its history and what works and what doesn't), and a single-minded goal of making the organization successful no matter what. Owen is great, but he and his team have inherited a bunch of problems and a nearly impossible mission at HMP. I have watched (and worked with) Owen for a number of years, and if anyone can address many of the concerns Mr. Peters has identified, it's Owen. Nick

  17. I really appreciate the live updates, top_shelf_12! I wish there were a way to compensate your work! Nick
  18. I aways sensed that the teams really didn't like the added burden and expense of prepping a special car for dirt. They all had to smile and spout the NA$CAR script about how much the teams loved racing the dirt was the way I took those interviews. I love watching local dirt track racing, but those cars just didn't do it for me.
