  1. There is no easy answer to the astronomical costs associated with asphalt short track racing. Claim rules have failed in many cases. Track owners are justifiably concerned about losing its "top teams" if the rule is strictly and consistently enforced. One proven way to make a class more cost effective while evening out the competition is to go with a "one-tire-a-week" rule. At San Antonio Speedway the rule generated increased car counts and closer competition when tires were the limiting factor. Were the well-financed teams happy with the rule? Absolutely not. But when the whole field was on equal tires, much of the expensive engine/drive-train stuff was basically useless since they couldn't get all that power to the ground due to the tire wear from previous weeks. Another way is to issue store-bought shocks to all teams and have them removed from every car after every feature event. Dyno a few of the shocks from top running teams each time and randomly reissue the shocks to teams before race events. Nick

  3. Quite true. Big money has indeed come to our dirt track community and expensive technological advances are following at an accelerated rate. In my opinion, the above scenario is a significant part of what is killing grass-roots asphalt racing. That, and well-intentioned, but woefully short-sighted track managers who allowed big-money interests to overrule common sense at every turn. It got so bad that only a very few resource-heavy teams dominated every class at local tracks across the country. Even today, the only really successful asphalt tracks run shows that draw deep-pocketed teams from around the country. Local asphalt oval racing is essentially on life support. Hopefully, experienced track officials - like Texas' Owen Pittman - will have the will-power and good business sense to curtail the influence of Big Money as it relentlessly pushes to escalate the cost of racing for the grass roots racers.

  12. Another option is to allow street racers who currently race on city streets to run two-by-two on the oval. We tried that at San Antonio Speedway, but the track insurance company killed it after a few weeks - once they found out about it! But if appropriate safety equipment and personal safety gear were mandated, it might just fly!
  13. For instance, in the draft section on alignments: The suspension arms, links, spindles, shocks, springs, and struts must be OEM or OEM equivalent parts, no aftermarket performance parts. The meaning of the term "OEM equivalent parts" is an open invitation for creative definitions of the term. Likewise, "aftermarket performance parts." Some companies catering to the budget racing community advertise their pieces as "OEM equivalent " or "OEM replacement parts," but are significantly different from the original OEM components in ways that help the handling of race cars. However, to assist with tire wear, components above the spindle may have the mounting location slotted for alignment purposes only. So, upper a-arm mounts and upper strut mounts can be altered. This tells anyone with even a small amount of suspension knowledge that critical camber and castor settings are basically free, like in the "Pro" classes. Caster split is now available as well as radical camber settings just like in the upper racing divisions. And if Tech asks, just say you made the changes "for alignment purposes only." The arms, links, and components must remain stock, but the holes on the chassis can be slotted, or have shims added if there is not enough range in the alignment abilities from the factory. Allowing chassis slots is asking for teams to start playing with bump steer technology and messing with roll center heights. Any bolt on parts found to be modified will be deemed illegal, only slotting of holes and shims may be added on the chassis side for the strut mount, or upper control arm, for alignment purposes only. Tech has the right to refuse allowing any modifications deemed beyond this illegal. Anyone with knowledge of front end geometry will jump all over these allowances "for alignment purposes." So far, I have just addressed the front end. Wouldn't a suspension guy love it if they could slot the chassis mounts on the rear end? I'm not even going there because I don't want to divulge too many secrets learned on Metric Chassis. These rules seem destined to undermine the intent of this class. Unless I read it wrong, there seems to be a 200 lbs maximum spring rate allowed. A 200-pound spring in the front end of a car running a-arms will bottom out. A 200 lbs spring in a strut car is felt at the tire contact patch as much stonger than a 200 lbs spring in a two a-arm car. Just a few of the things I noted while reading the draft rules.
  14. Mike, I spent some time reviewing the draft rules for the Street Sedan class you are proposing. While I understand that you are attempting to write rules that are inclusive, rather than specific, to encourage a wide variety of cars to join in the fun, these rules invite turmoil within the class as people figure out that certain makes and certain configurations have major advantages over some of the other possible eligible makes. Also, some productions cars are unable to handle the forces subjected to the suspensions and chassis and automatically an accident waiting to happen. And most pure stock cars overheat after a couple of laps in "passing gear." So, right away, deviations from "bone stock" are required if the class is to survive the rigors of all-out competition. Writing racing rules short is not an easy task and requires lots of time, lots of thought and, hopefully, lots of racing experience in the writer's resume. You're got the right idea by seeking advice from others, although some of the advice you will recognize as coming from someone hoping you'll write the rules the way that would give the advantage to their program.

  20. It's great that folks are brainstorming about ways to save asphalt racing in Texas. Keep it up! Having been directly involved since Pan American Speedway / Paramount Austins Speedway days, I hope the sport can be saved and return to some significant level of prosperity and popularity. My experience has been that "run-what-you-brung" type classes do OK for a short period of time or as a seciual event every year, or so. If run as a regular class, however, a few experienced folks will figure out how to maximize the lack of rules and dominate the show from the drop of the first green flag. Everyone else realizes their chances are slim to none and get discouraged and find something else to do with their time and money. That's why I suggested that rules be iron-clad and strictly enforced. Thanks for allowing this old fart to share...
  21. NASCAR levies huge penalty to Chase Briscoe, Stewart-Haas Racing by Bob Pockrass, FOX NASCAR insider NASCAR hammered Stewart-Haas Racing with one of its biggest penalties ever — including a $250,000 fine and 120 regular-season points — after it says it found a counterfeit part in the underwing of the Chase Briscoe car that it took back to its research and development center following the race Monday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. NASCAR docked Briscoe and the team 120 regular-season points and 25 playoff points and also suspended crew chief John Klausmeier for six races. The fine also is issued to Klausmeier, although typically these fines are paid by the team. Since the introduction of its Next Gen car in 2022 that requires teams to purchase most of the parts and pieces from a specific vendor, NASCAR has promised to issue severe penalties for modifying parts because the idea is that all drivers and teams have most of the same parts and pieces. Briscoe finished 20th in the race Monday and his car was one of two taken by NASCAR for teardown at its research and development center. NASCAR routinely takes a couple of cars following races to inspect. The cars taken are determined by the series director, who can have a reason or no reason to take the car. Stewart-Haas Racing chief competition officer Greg Zipadelli said the team mistakenly had the illegal part on the car for the event. "We had a quality control lapse and a part that never should’ve been on a car going to the racetrack ended up on the No. 14 car at Charlotte," Zipadelli said in a statement. "We accept NASCAR’s decision and will not appeal." NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer indicated it wasn’t an unintentional mistake on the team’s part — that the counterfeit part was a duct that runs to the engine panel and was made to look like the supplied part all the way down to the lettering. The piece the teams are supposed to use comes attached to the engine panel, Sawyer said. The duct is designed to cool areas of the car and directing air differently could enhance the performance of the car. NASCAR uses a template to check the inside of the duct and it did not meet the template. "Anything that you would do around that area would be some (performance) gain or they wouldn't have done it," Sawyer said. With the penalty, Briscoe falls from four points behind the current playoff cutoff to 124 points behind, creating a virtual must-win situation to make the playoffs. And even if he makes the playoffs, he likely will need to win in the playoffs to advance as the loss of 25 playoff points likely will put him in more must-win situations. The violation was what NASCAR considers the most serious — a Level 3 on a 1-to-3 scale. "When you counterfeit a part, it falls into a bucket with engines and messing with tires and things like fuel that is just not going to be tolerated," Sawyer said.
