  1. A sad reminder that racing is a sport that has obvious risks involved. Prayers for the family, fans and friends of Justin Owen.
  2. RICO ROLLS: Rico Abreu Banks $20,000 with Jason Johnson Classic Victory Abreu continues hot start with second win in seven starts WICHITA, KS (April 8, 2023) - The 81 Speedway fans roared as a victorious Rico Abreu climbed atop his wing and held up four fingers on one hand and a single finger on the other. The St. Helena, CA native was signaling his support to the man everyone showed up to salute Saturday night, Jason Johnson. Abreu led the entirety of the fifth Jason Johnson Classic, holding off a late rally by Carson Macedo to seal the win and $20,000 payday. The trip to Victory Lane at the Wichita, KS track was his second with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars in 2023 through only seven starts. It’s the first time since 2018 that Abreu has claimed multiple World of Outlaws Features in the same season. The 31-year-old is now up to 11 triumphs with The Greatest Show on Dirt. With Bobbi and Jaxx Johnson joining Abreu in his celebration on the front stretch in front of filled grandstands, emotion swelled for Abreu as he soaked in one of his most meaningful career victories. “These wins become really emotional when you get up here on the front straightaway in front of a packed house and in front of Jaxx,” Abreu said, patting Jason’s son on the shoulder. “It’s a very cherishing moment for my team and I. We’re all our here racing for Jason Johnson’s legacy.” Early on Abreu announced he would be tough to beat as he snatched the lead from the outside of the front row when the green flag flew. Behind him Carson Macedo and David Gravel began a war for the runner-up spot with Gravel securing it just before a yellow flag flew. The opening stage of the race became marred by stoppages including one for championship point leader, Brad Sweet, as he was involved in a multi-car incident entering Turn 1. The four-time and defending champion was able to make repairs and rejoin. Officials made the decision to utilize single file restarts for the remainder of the main event after the early issues, and it paid off as the yellow flag would not fly again for the balance of the race. Once the race established a rhythm, Abreu pulled ahead on a clear track, and even in early parts of navigating traffic, Abreu kept two of the country’s best in Macedo and Gravel safely behind. Abreu credited his team, led by Ricky Warner, and their growing chemistry for the speed of his #24 machine. “It all comes down to my team. They do an amazing job,” Abreu said. “Ricky, his critical thinking, and the way Zack adapts to Ricky’s thinking, and how Brady works through and processes things. It’s so cool to see.” Late in the going, Abreu was forced to fend off a late challenge from the man wheeling the Jason Johnson Racing ride, Macedo. The Lemoore, CA native found some speed on the very top of Turns 1 and 2 and used it to close on Abreu as the laps waned. Abreu crossed the start/finish line with two to go and made a decision he seldom had all race – going to the bottom of Turn 1. This allowed Macedo to get an even bigger run on the cushion and close quickly exiting Turn 2. As they screamed down the back straightaway, Macedo ducked low with hopes of throwing a slider in turn three. But Abreu protected the spot and didn’t allow Macedo to edge ahead. The JJR #41 slipped up the track mid-corner, allowing Abreu to pull away with the white flag in his sights. When the checkered flag flew, Abreu’s advantage had grown back to nearly a second as he became the eighth different winner at 81 Speedway through 14 Series visits and the fifth different winner of the Jason Johnson Classic. “I knew the #41 was behind me because of the scoreboard on the front stretch, and I knew he was giving it all he had,” Abreu explained. “It’s the style of Carson racing. So, just to be up here and racing in front of the best Sprint Car fans in the world is an unbelievable feeling.” Macedo wound up second, marking his third consecutive podium. The recent consistency paid off in elevating him into the points lead. While Macedo wanted more than anything to park the JJR ride in Victory Lane for the Jason Johnson Classic, he still walked away with his head held high with a second-place effort and sitting atop the standings. “It would’ve been really cool to park the Jason Johnson Racing car in Victory Lane at Jason Johnson’s race, but nevertheless we were on the podium again and had a solid night,” Macedo said. “At the end there I gave it everything I had and then some to try and win it.” Rounding out the top-three was Watertown, CT’s David Gravel. The Big Game Motorsports driver was strong during all 30 laps, even claiming the runner-up spot on multiple occasions, before taking home third. The effort equaled him with Brad Sweet (6) for the most podiums this season. He also moved into second in the standings. “It was a good effort,” Gravel said. “I wish Carson didn’t get by me there right after that red flag and then I maybe could’ve had a shot at Rico because Rico was searching quite a bit in (turns) one and two.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars are heading to Pevely, MO for a pair of nights (April 14-15) at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55. 3. MISSOURI MASTERPIECE: Sheldon Haudenschild Tops Barn Burner at U.S. 36 Raceway Haudenschild gives his father a fitting birthday gift OSBORN, MO (April 7, 2023) - On Friday night at U.S. 36 Raceway, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars delivered a gem that fans will be talking about for years to come. A race-long war for the top spot produced slider after slider and crossover after crossover along with one unforgettable three wide pass around the outside. Once the dust settled at the Osborn, MO oval, it was Sheldon Haudenschild who arose victorious after a 30-lap donnybrook against fellow stars – Carson Macedo, David Gravel, and Brad Sweet. Trent Gower photo The triumph marked his 32nd win with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars and second consecutive at U.S. 36 after topping the 2020 race. In fitting fashion, Haudenschild also won on his father, Jac’s, birthday. The Stenhouse Jr./Marshall Racing gasser made his dad proud by winning in the wild, white-knuckle fashion “The Wild Child” became famous for. Haudenschild is now only the second driver to top multiple World of Outlaws races at U.S. 36, joining Joey Saldana. It’s the seventh different track where he’s earned at least two Series victories. For Haudenschild and the team, who had been combating some early season struggles, the triumph also served as a welcome confidence boost. “Happy Birthday to my dad. He was probably pacing around the kitchen there for a while,” Haudenschild said with a laugh in Victory Lane. “Hats off to (Kyle) Ripper, Danny, Gravy. They’ve been working hard, and when you struggle to start the season, it’s tough. You’ve got to keep your spirits up and keep the whole team motivated. So, I’m just really happy with the whole night.” The early part of the race was controlled by Carson Macedo as he darted to the lead from the second starting spot and Haudenschild slotted into second. Macedo went mostly unchallenged for the first third of the race, but after the second of a pair of debris cautions, the intensity of the fight for the lead skyrocketed. David Gravel went from fourth to second on the restart and then briefly to the lead on the next circuit before Macedo slid back by. Then the next lap brought a move from Haudenschild that the entire Sprint Car community will fondly remember for a while. As Macedo and Gravel went wheel to wheel through Turns 3 and 4, Haudenschild ripped his NOS Energy Drink #17 around the top, making it three wide and squeezing by for the lead as they hit the front straightaway. “I actually hesitated, thought about not doing it, and then just kind of sent it,” Haudenschild explained. “I actually kind of shot down the front stretch there. I was pretty much doing a wallride and just happy Carson left us enough room to squeeze through there. I feel like that’s kind of how you have to race these places sometimes – just get your elbows up and let ‘er eat.” As soon as Haudenschild took the lead, the Wooster, OH native wasted no time pulling ahead of Macedo and the rest of the field. A yellow flag just before the halfway point rekindled the battle for the top spot. On the restart, Haudenschild and Macedo traded sliders before Macedo secured the position. On the next restart following a red flag, eighth-starting Brad Sweet emerged as a contender for the win as he moved by Haudenschild for the runner-up spot. The Kasey Kahne Racing pilot stayed close behind Macedo before the caution again flew with only nine laps remaining. The yellow was for championship leader Gravel who crashed entering Turn 1 and collected Spencer Bayston. The short dash to the checkered flag set the stage for a thrilling finish. When racing resumed, Sweet threw a slider but Macedo barely got around him on the top. On the next lap, Sweet’s slide job was successful, but Macedo turned his Jason Johnson Racing #41 under Sweet and edged ahead entering Turn 3. Behind them, Haudenschild was licking his chops as the two ahead dueled, allowing him to close in on their tail tanks. On Lap 24, Haudenschild dipped under Sweet for second heading down the backstretch. Then on the next circuit heading into Turn 1, he threw a huge slider on Macedo, clearing him and not allowing Macedo to crossover. After completing the pass for the lead, Haudenschild pulled away and went on to claim the checkered flag with nearly a second and a half advantage, kicking off a stretch of the calendar that they’ve had circled in the best way possible. “Ripper and I have been looking at the schedule and kind of been pointing at this weekend and on,” Haudenschild said. “I feel like we really have some tracks that we’re good at and have some work to do in some other places. But, overall I’m just happy to get a win pretty early in the season and just build off this.” Macedo held on for second in the Jason Johnson Racing #41 after leading 18 laps. The Lemoore, CA native’s second straight podium and the 71st of his career was good enough to move him from third to second in points. “Tonight was probably really exciting to be a fan but stressful for me in the car,” Macedo said with a smile. “Brad kind of got me talked out of the top, which was a mistake, I think. And then when I moved down, Sheldon ripped around me. I feel like, all in all, it’s tough to be upset with second, but I feel like I had a car to win there and just kind of didn’t get it done.” Completing the podium was the red-hot Brad Sweet in the Napa Auto Parts #49. “The Big Cat” is now at six podiums in the last eight races. The biggest benefit to his 263rd career podium was the fact that it elevated him into the points lead for the first time all season after Gravel’s issue as Sweet pursues a fifth consecutive championship. “I wish when I slid Carson, I would’ve been more committed to it,” Sweet admitted. “I figured I had him cleared, but I never want to run into anybody. So, I left a lane open, and he came to my inside. I think if I would’ve got to the cushion, I could’ve made more speed down the backstretch and cleared him. And with clear track, you never know what I could’ve done in lapped traffic, but I left a lane open for Sheldon, and he just picked his way through like Sheldon does sometimes.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars travel to 81 Speedway in Wichita Kansas on Saturday, April 8 for the $20,000 to win Jason Johnson Classic. 4. I'm just glad I was lucky enough to live back in the day when NASCAR was actually a bunch of guys wanting to race something other than the cops on back mountain roads. And lucky enough to be an active part - sometimes and important part - of San Antonio Speedway's storied history from day one until the day Terry Dickerson locked the gates. And lucky enough to be part of Neil Upchurch's Texas International Drivers Association from the very first days he took the "pony cars" to Mexico and promoted his first-ever Late Model show. Spent many an evening at his house figuring out weight formulas to balance the high compression V-8s, the 9:1 V-8s and the six cylinder Late Models. And then working with him at paved tracks from Altus Oklahoma to Monterrey Mexico. And serving as his tech official for the Pro Sedans for many years. And unlucky enough to witness the collapse of the once vibrant asphalt short track scene in Texas over the past few years. I'm hoping this site survives just for the sake of the many forums that bear witness to the sport over the past 22 years. Nick

  7. TRAILBLAZER: Avedisian Breaking Records as First Female National Midget Points Leader Series action resumes next Friday-Saturday with World of Outlaws Sprint Cars at I-55 CONCORD, NC (April 7, 2023) – For the first time in dirt track racing history, a woman sits atop the points standings of a national Midget series. DB3 Inc photo That honor belongs to Jade Avedisian – the first female national Midget Feature winner in history, and current Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota points leader by 30 after the first two races on the 2023 schedule. Nearly 90 years of Midget racing contested in the United States, and never once has a female topped the standings of a national tour. Avedisian’s broken some impressive records and hurdled some tall barriers over the past few years with her success – first in Micro Sprints, then since her Midget debut in 2021 – and said her life hasn’t been the same since. “It definitely has changed,” Avedisian said. “I think it’s so cool, though. The fans are half of the racing world; the fans make everything that goes on in the racing world. “I was at Jimmy John’s the other day, and someone was like, ‘Are you Jade?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah!’ I just think that’s so cool.” After a record-tying run as a rookie in the Chili Bowl Nationals A-Main in January, the 16-year-old Californian turned even more heads in February, breaking the news that she had signed with Keith Kunz Motorsports to chase a championship with the Xtreme Outlaw Series. Two races in, and she’s already been to Victory Lane, capturing the win in the Xtreme Outlaw Showdown finale Saturday night inside the Southern Illinois Center one month ago. “It’s definitely a confidence booster, winning no matter if it’s the first or the last race,” Avedisian said. “Winning at the first race [weekend] was awesome. It set the bar for what we’re capable of doing this year. I think we’re very capable of getting a few wins, as long as I do my job, and run for a championship as well.” It was a quick transition for Avedisian in the move to KKM from her former spot at Chad Boat Industries – where she spent the entirety of the 2021 and 2022 seasons. In a matter of weeks following the Chili Bowl, she had signed with the team, met her new crew chief, and was fitted for her new ride aboard the Mobil-1, Bullet/Toyota #71. First thing on their calendar together – the Xtreme Outlaw Showdown in Du Quoin. “There was a lot of [uncertainty] going into Du Quoin, but I knew that was a fantastic team,” Avedisian said. “Keith [Kunz], Pete [Willoughby, KKM CEO], and Jarrett [Martin] on the wrenches for my car this year, it’s kind of a dream team so far. “I know as long as I keep doing my job, I know my car is gonna be fantastic every night. It was pretty easy; they got me comfortable super fast, so I was grateful for that.” Next up, I-55. The high-banked, lightning-fast, 1/3-mile of Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 gave Avedisian some fits in the two Xtreme Outlaw races contested there last year, resulting in 14th and 15th-place finishes in the two-day event. She’ll take on the Pevely, MO track a total of four times in her pursuit of the Series title this year, and the first two are on the horizon next Friday-Saturday, April 14-15. “I think I’m so much better of a driver than I was last year,” Avedisian said. “I feel like my car is going to really shine there. Switching to a new team – they shine almost every weekend, basically – but they really shine at rough tracks.” Though the wins are nice, her eyes are on the real prize at the end of the season. Armed with some of the best equipment and team members in the sport, Avedisian knows there’s one key attribute she’ll need all season long if hoisting championship gold at the season finale is in her future. “I think consistency wins championships,” Avedisian said. “If maybe we don’t have a solid night, it’s still a long season. [Thirty-one] races is still quite a bit to go.” The Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota jumps back into action with the POWRi National Midget League at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 next Friday-Saturday, April 14-15. Tickets are on sale now at XtremeOutlawSeries.com. If you can’t be at the track to watch in-person, stream every lap live with a FAST PASS subscription to DIRTVision.

  9. Points after Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals (March 31-April1) OSBORN, MO (April 3, 2023) - Keep up with the latest movers in the chase for the 2023 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series championship. LATEST RACE(S): Devil’s Bowl Speedway (March 31-April 1) CURRENT POINTS LEADER: With a pair of fourth-place efforts in Texas, David Gravel continued to hold his point lead. The Watertown, CT native hasn’t finished worse than fourth in the last four races and owns a 4.1 average finish for the season. MOVERS: Brad Sweet (+1): The four-time and reigning champion put together another productive weekend, topping Friday’s Feature and following it with a fifth on Saturday. After entering the weekend third in points and 32 markers out of the top spot, Sweet climbed into second – just 26 points behind Gravel. “The Big Cat” has only missed the top five once in the last seven races and owns a 2.7 average finish over that span. Carson Macedo (-1): The Jason Johnson Racing driver lost a spot but didn’t lose a ton of ground in the grand scheme of things. On night one, Macedo finished seventh then followed it with a third on Saturday – his first podium since Volusia. Macedo slipped into third but is still only 32 points behind Gravel after trailing him by 28 points at the start of the weekend. He remains the only driver yet to miss the top 10 this season. Michael Kofoid (+1): Finishes of fifth and second at Devil’s Bowl elevated Kofoid into fourth in the standings. However, his time there won’t be long as he and CMS Racing are running a part-time World of Outlaws schedule. Logan Schuchart (-1): Shark Racing’s Logan Schuchart posted results of sixth and 14th this past weekend, dropping him down to fifth in the standings. While he would’ve preferred better finishes, the Hanover, PA native salvaged the second night by driving from 24th up to 14th, softening the blow in points and keeping the leaders not too far ahead. 12. J-MAC’S BACK: James McFadden Dominates Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals Finale for $20,000 McFadden tempers self-doubt with Devil’s Bowl victory MESQUITE, TX (April 1, 2023) - Even after an early season World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car win at Volusia Speedway Park, some doubt had begun to creep into James McFadden’s mind after a tough recent stretch. Ever since starting the season strong in Florida with four top-10s in five races, the Roth Motorsports pilot endured some struggles that saw him post four straight results of 13th or worse heading into the Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals finale at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. The doubt faded and confidence was restored Saturday night at the Mesquite, TX oval as McFadden engineered a dominating performance, leading all 30 laps on his way to a $20,000 payday. After managing only one World of Outlaws win in 2022, the 33-year-old now already owns two triumphs in 10 starts this year. The victory marked the seventh of his career at the seventh different racetrack in the seventh different state and his second with the Toyota Racing Development 410 Engine under the hood. And of course, the Alice Springs, NT native honored tradition by celebrating the win with a shoey atop the wing. “I’m just pumped,” said an emotional McFadden in Victory Lane. “The last few races have been tough for us as a team. You start to doubt your abilities and what we’re doing with the car. We’ve just been working really hard… I give credit to my guys. They’ve been working pretty hard. We’ve been, like I said, pretty terrible, tearing up racecars and doing silly things, so to reward them with a win tonight is great.” The race began with what proved to be a pivotal start. On what was a blazingly fast racing surface, getting ahead early was key. McFadden started second alongside Toyota Dash winner, Buddy Kofoid. As the green flag flew, McFadden ripped around Kofoid to take the early lead. “It was really important to get that start. I feel like if I would’ve let Buddy go on the start, he would’ve checked out,” McFadden explained. “I thought he (Kofoid) would’ve gone a little earlier. We were a little bit further around the corner, so I could get a run down the straightaway down the hill, so I got lucky there. We just put ourselves in the right position, and you have to with these guys from the moment you unload.” For Kofoid, he initially thought his start was strong, but thought he potentially should’ve attempted something else after McFadden got around him. “I felt like I restarted really good all weekend here,” Kofoid said. “I thought I had a good start, and James was just able to get around me, and that was probably what needed to happen differently for me.” After grabbing the lead, McFadden wasted no time in building an early lead in the Roth #83. After just two circuits, the gap had grown to nearly a second and a half. An early caution as McFadden was beginning to negotiate traffic cleared the track for him, but it would be the final time the yellow flag would fly. On the restart, McFadden darted ahead and built up the advantage again, but lapped traffic quickly proved to be an issue. As he navigated the slower cars, Kofoid quickly closed in. Unfortunately for the driver of the CMS Racing #11, a lane didn’t open before McFadden again pulled ahead by putting a lapped car between himself and Kofoid. Eventually, McFadden got to a point in the pack when he was confident that he could simply ride behind them without fear of losing the lead as the laps dwindled. “We were able to maneuver through some of those lapped cars,” McFadden recalled. “Then we got to (Brian) Brown and just sort of thought he was fast enough, so I don’t need to go do anything silly.” McFadden proved himself right by patiently driving in Brown’s tire tracks while Kofoid struggled to clear a slower car between himself and McFadden. It appeared that a battle for the lead may shape up when the car between them pulled off with an issue, but ultimately McFadden proved to be too strong. He took the checkered flag with a 1.542 second advantage, helping to rekindle his early season confidence. “Big thanks to Dennis and Teresa Roth for giving me this opportunity,” said a grateful McFadden. “The last couple of weeks have been pretty bad to watch, but to stand on the front straight here at Devil’s Bowl is pretty special.” Kofoid held on to second to continue his impressive early season stretch. Entering this year, the Penngrove, CA native owned a pair of podiums in 24 World of Outlaws Feature starts, and he’s already up to four top-threes through 10 starts this year. With the pace of the field, Kofoid knew he needed to rely on McFadden to make a mistake that never happened. “The track was just super heavy where it kind of made it hard to be a whole lot better than someone,” Kofoid commented. “Everyone was pretty much going the same speed, and you kind of saw that with lapped traffic. Everyone was just so fast. Once I got clear of the one lapper, I got back to James, but it was going to take a mistake from him for me to get by him.” Completing the top-three was Carson Macedo. Like Kofoid, Macedo found it difficult to make up much ground on the car ahead with the amount of speed everyone was carrying. So, the Jason Johnson Racing driver settled for third, his 70th career podium and first since Volusia. “The track was just really fast,” Macedo noted. “It made it tough to pass there in the Feature. I felt like we got to traffic, and I thought that would maybe mix it up, but it seemed like the lapped cars, once we got to them, we would kind of stall out behind their wings and go just as fast as them.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars begin a major Midwest swing next weekend with trips to US 36 Raceway in Osborn, MO and 81 Speedway in Wichita, KS. The latter is the fifth Jason Johnson Classic, awarding $20,000 to the winner. For tickets, CLICK HERE. If you can’t make it to the track, catch all of the action on DIRTVision. Wolff wires pack for USMTS Cajun Clash triumph VIVIAN, Louisiana (April 1)—Tyler Wolff dominated the 50-lap main event Saturday at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway and pocketed $10,000 for winning the 10th Annual USMTS Cajun Clash. Tyler Rinken photo A handful of cautions and a little bit of lapped traffic sprinkled in were no help to the rest of the field. Wolff earned the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award, took the lead at the waving of the green flag and led Chris Henigan all the way to the finish. Driving the No. 4W ARMI Contractors/Lobo Racing MB Customs Modified, it was the third career USMTS victory for the 37-year-old from Fayetteville, Arkansas. Through seven races, the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt has now seen seven different winners driving seven different chassis with seven different powerplants under the hood. Henigan is a two-time winner at the ‘Land of Three Wide’ but had to settle for runner-up honors while Zack VanderBeek registered a season-best third-place finish. Darron Fuqua and Dan Ebert rounded out the top five. Sixth went to Kyle Brown, Jake O'Neil raced from 13th on the grid to seventh at the checkered flag, Jeremy Nelson started and finished eighth, Rodney Sanders nabbed the ninth spot and Carlos Ahumada Jr. was tenth at the finish line. 15. Cayden Carter conquers second night of USMTS Cajun Clash The Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, Louisiana, played host to the second round of the 10th Annual USMTS Cajun Clash Friday night with a rookie champ and a rookie title chaser stealing the show at the ‘Land of Three Wide.’ Another gathering of open-wheel modified muscle filled the pit area for the sixth race of the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt. Cayden Carter earned the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award but it was ‘Big Daddy’ Joe Duvall who seizes control on the opening lap. With Carter following in Duvall’s tire tracks around the red clay oval, the yellow flag waved for the first time on lap 12 when the leader’s first lapped car spun just in front of the lead pack. Tyler Rinken photo At the same time, Tyler Wolff retired with drivetrain issues and another quick caution slowed the pace on the restart when Cade Dillard stopped atop turn two with a flat tire. The caution came out for a third time on lap 16 due to a five-car pile-up in turn four, but it was one lap too late for Duvall as Carter wrestled the lead away just in time to lead the field back to the green flag with Duvall, Jake O’Neil, Will Krup and Jade Luzenberg following. Action was short-lived again when Luzenberg went sideways in the first corner, collecting Dan Ebert in the process and yielding the fourth caution and ending Luzenberg’s impressive effort. Meanwhile, Carter exploded to a big lead over O’Neil and Duvall on the restart while multiple positions throughout the field put on a show for the fans until the fifth caution came out with 26 laps down and 14 to go. The restart brought tom Berry Jr. into the picture as the rim-riding rookie picked off Rodney Sanders and Duvall in the first six laps. With eight to go, he drove around O’Neil for second and set his sights on Carter. Lapped traffic with two laps to go made for a nail-biting finish that saw Carter forced to move to the outside, thus blocking Berry’s charge. Carter crossed the finish line with Berry at his side in second. “I heard him out there, and knew I had to do something to just break his speed,” Carter reveled in victory lane. “He’s won a lot of big races the last few years so it’s great to get the win.” Behind last years Grant Junghans USMTS Rookie of the Year and Berry, who is aiming at the same $10,000 title this season, it was O’Neil hanging on for third with Sanders edging Duvall for fifth. Dereck Ramirez, Krup, Jim Chisholm, Jason Hughes and Carlos Ahumada Jr. completed the top ten on the near-perfect racing surface. Action continues Saturday at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway for round three of the 10th Annual USMTS Cajun Clash and a $10,000 winner’s paycheck just waiting for a name to be written on it. USRA Limited Mods, Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks and USRA Tuners will also be on the card. The Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt currently features 46 nights of racing at 15 of America's premier dirt track racing venues in nine states for its Silver Anniversary season. 16. Brad Sweet Rolls to Victory on Night One of Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals The four-time champion earns back-to-back wins for the first time since mid-2021 After knocking down the door to his first World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car win of the season last week, Brad Sweet made sure it stayed down in Texas. On Friday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, the “Big Cat” patiently waited for the right moment to pounce, and after taking the lead on Lap 10, Sweet never looked back on his way to victory on night one of the Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals. The four-time and reigning Series champion now owns two straight wins after topping last Saturday’s event at Magnolia Motor Speedway, marking his first back-to-back triumphs since July of 2021. He’s now only three victories shy of equaling Stevie Smith (84 wins) for 10th on the all-time World of Outlaws win list. The Kasey Kahne Racing driver has also only missed the top two once in the last six races, giving him a 2.33 average finish over that span. It’s clear that the dynamic between he and the KKR crew consisting of Eric Prutzman, Tye Wolfgang, and Andrew Bowman is as strong as ever as Sweet chases his fifth straight title. “It’s an unbelievable team right now,” a grateful Sweet said in Victory Lane. “We’re just making such great decisions all night long. We didn’t unload that great. I think we threw four bars at it, changed everything under the sun. We went sixth to third in the Dash, but I still wasn’t that good, so we still even made some pretty big changes for the [Feature]. I’m just really impressed with our decision making. We’re really just working well together and trying to figure these tires out. It seems like we’ve got a good handle on it, really working for me right now. I’m just excited to keep it rolling.” Sweet started the 25-lap Feature from row two but quickly jumped into the runner-up spot behind pole-sitter, Brent Marks, on the opening circuit. As the early laps unfolded, Sweet made it clear he would have something for the Murray-Marks #19. The Napa Auto Parts #49 stayed glued to Marks’ tail tank, and Sweet showed him a nose a few times, making Marks aware that he had company. Finally, a slight slip from Marks exiting Turn 2 on Lap 10 gave Sweet the run he needed. As the lead duo navigated Turns 3 and 4, Sweet ripped the cushion to take the lead as Marks rolled the bottom. “I got Brent moving a little, and I felt like my car was way better,” Sweet explained. “I was just kind of waiting until lapped traffic or the right opportunity. I didn’t really want to show him a nose until I thought I could clear him, but he slipped up and I just didn’t quite get there but kept my cool. I honestly just felt really under control the whole time and felt like we just had a really good handling car. I could do a lot with my feet and brakes and everything.” Once Sweet snagged the lead, it simply became a question of how far would the gap grow? The veteran sliced through slower cars with ease as Marks and third-running Jacob Allen watched him drive away. When the checkered flag waved, Sweet’s lead was north of a whopping five seconds. Friday banked $10,000 for Sweet and served as a strong opening statement heading into Saturday’s $20,000 to win Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals finale. “This gives us a good starting point for tomorrow night, and hopefully we’ll be standing here again,” Sweet said. Behind Sweet, last year’s Texas Outlaw Nationals champion, Brent Marks, held on to the runner-up spot after leading the first nine laps, marking his first Series podium of the year and the 28th of his career. Traffic hindered the Myerstown, PA native’s hopes of winning, but he admitted that even with a clear track, Sweet would’ve been tough to top. “The 49 was really good, and I just couldn’t get through lapped traffic,” Marks said. “I wasn’t able to move around to try different stuff to try and catch Brad again, but they were just so good I don’t know if I was going to be able to. All in all, it was a great night. We just ended up being too tight there and just had to muscle the car into the corner a little too hard.” Rounding out the top-three and equaling his Devil’s Bowl personal best was Shark Racing’s Jacob Allen. The Hanover, PA driver now owns 24 career World of Outlaws podiums. Like Marks, Allen found himself struggling at times with traffic. “It was a good race,” Allen noted. “I did struggle with a couple lapped cars there. I think that kind of hurt me with maybe getting to second. Brad ran a good race, got through lapped cars and off he went. “It feels good to have my second podium of the year. I’m feeling good on the new tires. I feel like it took a couple of races to figure that out, and it feels good to have an understanding of them and get my car adjusted to them.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars are back at Devil’s Bowl Saturday, April 1, for the Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals finale. 19. Dillard does it again at Ark-La-Tex Speedway The Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt rolled into the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, Louisiana, Thursday for the first of three nights at the ‘Land of Three Wide’ with native son Cade Dillard of Robeline notching his series-best fourth career USMTS victory here. Tyler Rinken photo Opening night at the 10th Annual USMTS Cajun Clash saw a scary-good field of 59 powerful Summit USMTS Modifieds roll through the gates for the fifth race of the season with USRA Limited Mods and Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks also on the card. Houston’s Colton Horner set the pace for the 30-car starting field to get the green flag, and then proceeded to lead the first seven laps before Dillard was able to race ahead to lead the eighth lap. Just two brief cautions slowed the action in the 35-lap main event with the final yellow flag waving with just a handful of laps remaining when Rodney Sanders and Jim Chisholm split a lapped machine, resulting in Sanders sliding to a stop atop turn three. Back under green Chisholm challenged Dillard in the final five laps but had to settle for runner-up honors while ‘The Thriller’ pocketed a $3,000 paycheck and his 20th career USMTS triumph. “This is where I got my first USMTS win,” Dillard recalled. “It’s been a long road since then and I’m just thankful for the opportunities I’ve had. “I never thought I'd still be racing, much less doing the things I've got to do, but it's a blast. To me there's nothing more fun than mod racing… There’s not better modifieds in the country than what races with these guys and I got so much respect for them.” Behind Chisholm, Dereck Ramirez held off Darron Fuqua for third while Grant Junghans USMTS Rookie of the Year contender Chase Holland completed the top five. Horner, points leader Jason Hughes, 18th-starting Tyler Wolff, Brandon Givens and Taton Hansen rounded out the top ten. Action continues Friday and Saturday at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway for rounds two and three of the 10th Annual USMTS Cajun Clash. 20. March 25th event penalty! Factory stocks had a very rough night which is very frustrating and must change immediately! I am not going to put up with stupid stuff. I am sure some people will not like this but if you are going to come to the track and tear up cars intentionally then I am going to call you on it and penalize you for it. I don’t care who it is, it will not be tolerated. The 139 Factory Stock will not be allowed to race for the next 2 events, he will be fined $200 which will go to the 741 car for repairs if and when he decides to pay. He will not be allowed to return to the Race Ranch until he pays the fine. Probation for the remainder of the year. All of this is due to intentionally wrecking the 741 on the track, then speeding through the pits endangering adults and children! We will not put up with intentionally wrecking people period. Now on the rough driving in general, we will not be putting up with it, we will issue black flags for those that choose to drive like that, we must clean this up now.
