  1. Ebert reigns in King of America XII Daniel was in the lion’s den Saturday night at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kansas, for the finale of RacinDirt USMTS King of America XII presented by Shocker Hitch, but he emerged a newly-crowned king at the end of a 60-lap battle. Buck Monson photo After Terry Phillips won in impressive fashion on Thursday, most of the betting was heavy on his side again Saturday after his crew drew the pole for a second straight night. It appeared that Phillips was on his way to another historic win as he pulled away from the pack and led the first 30 laps unchallenged. Only Dan Ebert was able to stay with him and he eventually ran him down. Ebert, from Lake Shore, Minnesota, made the winning pass with 33 laps down and 27 to go. His car just continued to get smaller in the windshield of every chaser. With the threat of rain looming above, Ebert made quick work of lapped traffic and never faltered. In his Collins Brothers Towing #60, Ebert took the checkered flag on lap 60 with a 4.984-second advantage—more than double the combined margins of victory in the first three events this year. “Unbelievable really. Special thanks to (Race Director) Todd, he said ‘We gotta hurry here the rain’s coming. Look at it, it’s going here,” Ebert said in victory lane as the rain began to fall. ”Early in the go I was just searching—trying some high, trying some low—and decided to go back to the bottom and see where we’ve been running. I just kept working him and working him but I had to be real careful not to slide my tires.” It was no surprise to find Ebert near the front of the pack. With three top-ten efforts and a pair of top-five finishes so far this year, Ebert improved his score card with a $12,000 triumph on Saturday in becoming King Daniel XII—the eleventh different winner of this event. It was his third USMTS triumph. “We made a shock change today and the FOX Shocks are really dialed-in,” he added. ”We studied our tires last night and we saw some blistering but thought it was from the cold weather, so I think we made the right call tonight.” For Phillips, it was his second runner-up effort in four races, but it was enough for another healthy payday and enough to lay claim to the top spot in the national points standings. Last year’s Grant Junghans USMTS Rookie of the Year, Cayden Carter, finished third and fans got to witness an amazing run by Rodney Sanders as the four-time USMTS National Champion started dead last in 30th and crossed the finish in fourth. A former winner here, Zack VanderBeek was as solid as ever with a fifth-place finish. Jim Chisholm, defending event champion Jake O'Neil, Jason Hughes, Jeremy Nelson and Tyler Wolff completed the top ten at the checkered flag. A short week lies ahead as the Summit USMTS Modifieds invade the “Land of Three Wide” for the 10th Annual USMTS Cajun Clash at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, Louisiana. After a practice session Wednesday, drivers will race for $3,000 to win Thursday, $5,000 to win Friday and $10,000 to win Saturday, April 1. For complete information, check out the Fast Facts. The Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt currently features 46 nights of racing at 15 of America's premier dirt track racing venues in nine states for its Silver Anniversary season. 2. Brad Sweet Wins Magnolia for First World of Outlaws Victory of Season Sweet becomes fourth quickest to 80 Series wins COLUMBUS, MS (March 25, 2023) - Brad Sweet had been banging on the door of his first World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car win of 2023 entering Saturday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway, and the door finally collapsed. Trent Gower photo Heading into the evening, the four-time and defending champion had posted three runner-ups in his last four races, but victory had eluded him. He and the Kasey Kahne Racing team continued to field fast car after fast car, a win just outside their grasp, and finally persistence paid off. “The Big Cat” would not be denied on Saturday at the second Series visit to the Columbus, MS oval, snatching the lead on lap 10 and holding off a few late challenges to claim the checkered flag. The victory marked a major milestone for the pilot of the Napa Auto Parts #49 as he became only the 11th driver in Series history to reach 80 wins. Sweet also was the fourth fastest to hit the mark, trailing only the legendary trio of Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, and Doug Wolfgang. “Anytime you get your name mentioned with those guys, the legends of the sport, that’s pretty cool,” Sweet said. “80 wins, it’s just not possible without my guys at KKR. They’ve given me a great opportunity over these last 10 years. Ever since I teamed up with Eric (Prutzman), Andrew (Bowman), and now we got Tye Wolfgang and we’re clicking well.” Sweet led the field to green after topping the Toyota Racing Dash, but it was second-starting Sheldon Haudenschild ripping the top to lead the opening lap. It was evident early on that Sweet would be a factor as he didn’t allow Haudenschild to pull ahead as they worked through to opening portion of the race. As the leaders entered traffic, Sweet found his opening and threw a slider at Haudenschild to take the top spot. Haudenschild was unable to turn underneath the Napa Racing #49 to regain the lead, and Sweet wasted no time setting sail. Traffic remained a factor and allowed Haudenschild to narrow the gap at one point, but Sweet worked through slower cars well enough to keep the NOS Energy Drink #17 behind him. “This track is extreme one way or the other,” Sweet said of the conditions during the Feature. “The grip is extreme and the slick is extreme ice. You’ve got to be really careful on the throttle.” Sweet’s biggest challenger arose in the form of the current point leader, David Gravel. Coming to 11 laps to go, Gravel, who started 10th, wheeled the Big Game Motorsports #2 into the runner-up spot and quickly closed on Sweet. As the two navigated traffic, Gravel appeared poised to take a swing at the lead but couldn’t find the right opening. Late cautions giving Sweet clean air made it even more of a task for Gravel. “I got a little conservative there. If I could retry, I’d definitely try the bottom there,” Gravel admitted. “I just didn’t want to throw it away. I felt like it was probably pretty easy to crash there if you tried too hard and made a mistake. I did get tight on the cushion in the last corner. Brad did a great job. I think in lapped traffic we had the better car, We probably had the car to win, but clean air and everything worked out for him.” Sweet ultimately cruised to his 80th win with a seventh tenths of a second advantage over Gravel. Sweet has now won at 45 different tracks in World of Outlaws competition. “I just tried to hustle,” Sweet said. “I just wanted to win for my guys. They deserve it. We want to get some momentum going early in the year, and the car is handling good.” Gravel held on for second, notching his Series-leading fifth podium of the season and the 198th of his World of Outlaws career. Though he thought he had a car to win, Gravel still came away satisfied with the effort, especially after starting the main event 10th. “Like I said, I think we had the car to beat tonight,” Gravel said. “We passed a lot of fast racecars on a really aggressive track. That was a workout. That was a lot of fun, and hopefully we’re up here (on the podium) a lot more.” Completing the top-three was Sheldon Haudenschild. The third-place effort marked his first podium of the season aboard the Stenhouse Jr./Marshall Racing #17. Leading laps and a season best performance served as a much-welcomed morale boost for Haudenschild as he looks to build early season momentum. “This is definitely where this car belongs. My guys work too hard for this thing not to be up front,” Haudenschild said. “We’ve been working hard. This first little part of the season we haven’t got a bunch of races in, and we’ve struggled a little bit, so to get this NOS Energy Drink car up here is just a huge confidence boost. I feel like this is where we belong.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars head to Devil’s Bowl Speedway (Mesquite, TX) for the Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals (March 31- April 1). 6. Phillips gets emotional win in USMTS King of America kickoff Despite a storied career that’s been ongoing longer than most of his competitors have been alive, to say that Thursday was monumental on many levels for Terry Phillips would be a monumental understatement. Tyler Rinken photo Against a teeth-gnashing pack of 62 formidable challengers, the second-generation racer from Springfield, Missouri, stood alone at the top after dominating the opening night main event at RacinDirt USMTS King of America XII presented by Shock Hitch. In his more than 40 starts here at the Humboldt Speedway, this was his third feature win and second in a King of America preliminary feature. The $12,000-to-win main event—which takes place Saturday—remains the lone crown jewel event missing from the hall-of-famer’s trophy case. The 56-year-old veteran was the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award winner and he parlayed that advantage into a wire-to-wire victory in Thursday night’s 35-lapper at ‘The Hummer.’ He led every lap to pocket $3,000 and his 39th career USMTS triumph. Phillips’s first 38 were behind the wheel of a GRT, but this was his first for his new Bloodline Race Cars chassis company. “Man, it’s been a lot of hard work. I’ve got Cole my main here that helps build these cars here with us tonight, my daughter, Tommy Boy my new crew chief here,“ Phillips said. “I’m a little emotional tonight because I just retired from Late Model racing today. Sold out. So it’s all about the Modifieds now. Maybe we’ll be hard on ‘em or something. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist but in the end I think it pays off—I was taught that way by my Dad (hall-of-famer Larry Phillips) so it’s just a great night to feel this good and put a pretty good whoopin’ on them… He had me welding frames together in high school so it started a long time ago. I’m proud of the bloodline crew tonight and there’s more of these to come.” The race was nothing close to a runaway though. As is usually the case in a summit USMTS main event with 29 starters on a tight quarter-mile bullring, heavy lapped traffic midway through the feature kept the rest of the top five within sight of the leader. The two constants were four-time USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes—the winningest driver at Humboldt with 13 career wins, including King of America V in 2015—and Dan Ebert who is slowly but surely piling up wins and experience on the USMTS campaign. Help arrived for Phillips when a mid-race caution gave him a clear line of sight and allowed him to jump out ahead of his pursuers. It also brought into play Ryan Gustin as ‘The Reaper’ patiently searched for a way around the side-by-side second- and third-place runners Hughes and Ebert, but nothing would stand in the way of Phillips as he pedaled to an emotional and historic win on Thursday night. “Gustin, he can drive anything with four wheels whether it’s a go kart or a drag car. Total respect for him,” Phillips added. “I knew Jason was there because he hit me in the bumper on every restart.” “I just kind of pushed him,” Hughes said laughingly. “I didn’t know when he was gonna start and I wasn’t gonna be left there behind. I knew he’d try and sucker us on that.” Hughes came from sixth on the grid to finish second while Gustin slipped by Ebert late to claim the third sport on the podium. Adding to the level of impressiveness and nostalgia, six of the previous nine King of America champions followed Phillips across the finish line. The main event also featured five former USMTS National Champions with a combined ten titles between them. If things keep going his way this weekend and beyond, Phillips just might be able to check off two bucket list crowns between Saturday and November’s finale. Darron Fuqua and Tyler Wolff finished fifth and sixth after starting 14th and 15th, respectively. Defending King of America winner Jake O'Neil was seventh 2016 King of America winner Zack VanderBeek pocketed an eighth-place prize. Last year’s points runner-up Tanner Mullens was ninth and Johnny Scott, who won his first and only USMTS National championship in 2018, completed the top 10. Of note, four-time USMTS titlist Rodney Sanders finished 11th and the 2021 USMTS belt-wearer, Dereck Ramirez, wound up 18th. The swarm returns to the Humboldt Speedway for RacinDirt King of America XII presented by Shocker Hitch and the 8th Annual Battle at The Bullring on Friday and Saturday. For more information, check out the Fast Facts. The Humboldt Speedway is a 1/4-mile semi-banked clay oval located off of US 169 to the Humboldt exit, then 0.1 mile west, then 0.5 mile south, then 0.9 mile east to 1663 Georgia Rd, Humboldt, KS 66748. The Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt currently features 46 nights of racing at 15 of America's premier dirt track racing venues in nine states for its Silver Anniversary season. Just the winners of those events are set to earn more than $300,000 with nearly $2 million in purses and prize money earmarked for the 2023 campaign. 8. Oh, you mean Alan Holt over at KIII-TV. I know his dad and he can be a pain for sure.
  9. Yep, everyone loved me. Oh, I suppose there may have been one or two who let me know that I wasn't their ideal track official. Ok, maybe there we a few more than just one or two - maybe like a whole bunch more. You should really stop eating peanuts, Mike. Obviously not good for your health.
  10. Why in the world would anyone even think about disrespecting NA$CAR?
  11. Most will recall Jon from his days running the Texas branch of the ARTS truck series a long time ago!
  12. Jon Garrett Forms Veer Motorsports to Compete Full-Time in the 2023 ARCA Menards Series Garrett to pilot the No. 66 entry through an alliance with Fast Track Racing Mooresville, NC (January 14th, 2023) – Jon Garrett, the Athens, Texas resident, has formed Veer Motorsports to compete in the ARCA Menards Series full-time for the 2023 season. Garrett will pilot the No. 66 entry. "I am looking forward to seeing what will come in 2023," said Garrett. "I have a great opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream with Veer Motorsports and Andy at Fast Track Racing. Driving the full schedule, with good equipment - the pressure will be on me to learn and perform to the potential of the equipment. I would also like to thank Ron Vandermier Sr and Ron Vandermier Jr for allowing me to represent and compete with the No. 66 number. We are looking forward to having a fun and successful season." Joining ownership of Veer Motorsports is long time friend and business partner, Lane Moore, and son Logan Moore. Lane and Garrett have a long history in motorsports, spanning back to the early 2000's where they competed against each other on track in the American Truck Series. Moore commented, "I am really excited to see what the year brings. We have acquired some really good equipment and with the help of Andy Hillenberg, and we are anxious to have some good runs this year." Partnering together with Andy Hillenburg and Fast Track Racing, Garrett will be piloting the No. 66 entry for all twenty ARCA Menards Series events on the schedule. Throughout the year, Veer Motorsports will have an alliance with the Fast Track Racing team, where Garrett got his first start in the series. "Fast Track Racing is ecstatic to partner with Jon and Veer Motorsports for the 2023 season. We are looking forward to having a full year to work together and grow, and see what new heights we can achieve! With Andy's guidance, we know the No. 66 car will be in good hands with this new partnership," said John Szulczewski, Marketing & Partnerships Director at Fast Track Racing. Additional information on personnel and sponsors are set to be announced in the coming weeks. 14. Rico Abreu Masters Lincoln for World of Outlaws Win in First Race of 2023 Abreu earns 10th Series win while Macedo banks $10,000 with Spring Showdown championship ABBOTTSTOWN, PA (March 18, 2023) - Rico Abreu made a powerful opening statement for his 2023 Sprint Car season. On a night that was all about World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars battling the PA Posse, it was a driver not fitting into either category coming out on top. Making his 2023 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car season debut, Abreu topped a thriller at Lincoln Speedway (Abbottstown, PA) on Saturday night in the Low-E Insulation Spring Showdown finale. The St. Helena, CA native outdueled four-time and defending Series champion, Brad Sweet, in the 35-lap Feature to take home the $10,000 check. The victory marked his 10th with The Greatest Show on Dirt and first in the state of Pennsylvania. Abreu became the 48th different driver to reach double digit World of Outlaws wins and only the eighth from the state of California. Needless to say, Abreu was thrilled for he and his #24 crew to come out swinging so forcefully to begin his year. “It’s an incredible feeling,” Abreu said. “It’s incredible for my team. I think that’s the coolest part for me is for my team to experience something like that. Those are definitely difficult wins to come by.” The majority of the 35 laps proved to be a three-horse race between Abreu, Sweet, and Raymond, WA native turned PA Posse driver, Devon Borden. Sweet controlled the early portion of the race, taking off from the pole position. The driver of the Kasey Kahne Racing #49 faced an early challenge from Freddie Rahmer as traffic became a factor early on. However, on lap nine Rahmer’s chances vanished as he nosed into Sweet’s tail tank and spun in Turn one. Rahmer’s misfortune moved Borden into the runner-up spot. On the ensuing restart, it appeared as if Sweet may get away, but lapped traffic again posed an issue for him, allowing Borden to close in. Around the halfway point, Borden made one valiant attempt at the lead as he drew even with Sweet down the front straightaway, but Sweet got his elbows up and pulled away after catching a glimpse of the Shuttlesworth-Stehman #23 to his outside. “I actually thought there, for a minute, we were going to have a really good shot to win,” Borden said of the battle with Sweet. “We were really fast, had a really good car. I was just trying to stay patient and got to Sweet there a couple of times and was really close to him.” Only a lap after Sweet put some distance between himself and Borden, Abreu’s car began to come alive as he rolled by Borden and set his sights on Sweet. Shortly after taking the runner-up spot, Abreu closed on “The Big Cat” and tossed a slider on him to take the lead coming to 13 laps to go. Abreu gave plenty of credit to his legendary crew chief, Ricky Warner, and his work on the wrenches for his late race speed. “Ricky is obviously a very experienced crew chief and understands the ability to adapt quickly when it comes to crew chief decisions on racetracks that develop throughout the night,” Abreu said. “My car was unbelievably fast tonight. I was really lucky to get good track position and not have to fight too hard to get up front. Toward the end of the race, my car just kept getting better and better.” After Abreu took the lead, there was no looking back as he pulled ahead and ultimately took the checkered flag with nearly a two second advantage over Sweet. A win to kick off his racing season left Abreu feeling especially grateful for his situation. “I have some great partners,” Abreu said. “Everybody just does an unbelievable job. It’s just really cool to sit back and see it and see everybody involved and how pleasuring it is to me to be in this position. It’s unbelievable.” Behind Abreu, Sweet finished on the podium for the second time this year, earning the 259th of his illustrious career with the World of Outlaws. The Grass Valley, CA native felt encouraged with the result but also couldn’t help but think of what could’ve been after leading the opening 22 circuits. “Overall tonight, we were pretty happy with our car, finishing second even though we were leading laps and up front,” Sweet explained. “I just felt we were a little off in the A (main), but this is a tough field of cars. And with new tires and a lot of unknowns, you just don’t know how these nights are going to go, so we’re pretty happy with second with our Napa Auto Parts car.” Rounding out the podium in just his 14th career World of Outlaws Feature start was Borden, marking his first career Series top-three. “It honestly means the world just to be running out here in Pennsylvania against the absolute best in the world and running up front and contending for wins, you know,” Borden said. “We’ve come a long way, didn’t think I’d be here this soon. It’s really cool.” One spot behind Borden was a hard charging Carson Macedo. The Jason Johnson Racing driver moved up from ninth to fourth, enough to make him the Low-E Insulation Spring Showdown champion and pocket an extra $10,000. “It means a lot to us,” Macedo said. “I think it’s something really cool they put together that hopefully they continue to do in the future. I feel like all the people from Low-E Insulation, that’s a good chunk of change for them to put out.” David Gravel and Brad Sweet finished second and third in the Spring Showdown standings to take home the remaining portion of the point fund with Gravel taking $6,000 and Sweet claiming $4,000. UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars will take on a down south double header as next weekend (March 24-25), Talladega Short Track (Eastaboga, AL) and Magnolia Motor Speedway (Columbus, MS) host The Greatest Show on Dirt. 18. I had the responsibility for making rainout calls for San Antonio Speedway for several years and for a year or two for THR (before it was Central Texas Speedway). Here's how it often turned out. In situations where there was threatening weather before the event, It was a "good" call if: 1) I called it off and the track was actually experiencing bad weather at race time. 2) I didn't call it off and we somehow managed to get the show in before the bad weather hit. It was a "bad" call if: 1) I called it off but the track conditions were actually good enough to allow some on-track time. 2) I didn't call it off and folks sat in their haulers waiting for the monsoon to subside. It was more or less a crap shoot, but you'd hear from pissed off folks no matter the call.... Nick
  19. Forecasted weather halts Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals by Bryan Hulbert MESQUITE, Texas (March 15, 2023) The start of the 2023 season for the American Sprint Car Series will have to wait a little longer as officials with the Devil’s Bowl Speedway have made the call to cancel this weekend’s Spring Nationals due to forecasted heavy rains on Thursday, followed by low and near freezing temperatures on Friday and Saturday that won’t allow time for the already rain softened facility to be usable. The 2023 season will now begin with the $15,000 to win Capital City Clash at Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss., on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1. The 2023 season will mark the 32nd year of competition for the American Sprint Car Series. Spearheaded by the American Sprint Car Series National Tour, the ASCS Nation includes Regional Tours that encompass both wing and non-wing competition.
  20. Awesome! But you know as well as me, most racing organizations make it a point to send results and their press releases to media. I get a bunch of stuff from race tracks and series that are of little interest to most folks who visit this site. I used to post the results from World of Outlaws, IMCA, etc. and every now and then I post them but usually no one reads them because if they are interested in that series, they already go to that series FB page or website to obtain the results they are interested in. I would certainly post results from any Texas short track or any Texas-based short track series if someone would just send them to me. be it dirt or asphalt.
