  1. I suppose there are folks who think this is a good idea, but I'm not one of them.
  2. Sounds familiar. Rick Rapp was leading an All Pro race at San Antonio Speedway back in the day and ran out with two laps remaining!
  3. The FINALE of the ADVANCE AUTO PARTS SUMMER SHOWDOWN SERIES! Here are the current points going into the FINALE this Saturday Night! Who will be the CHAMPIONS standing in ALPHA ONE VICTORY LANE?
  4. The rule works best when it is used at a local track with few "newcomers" or a series where the "regulars" make up most of the field. I have a complete set of the "one-tire-a-week" rules that I used at San Antonio Speedway. It's multi-pages since racers (often their own worst enemy) will try to 'beat the rules" if they don't cover a lot of scenarios. So, the rules were pretty specific and detailed. I don't have them here with me in Maine, but when get back to SA in the fall, I've happy to share them with you.
  5. Kirby is a pretty savvy racer himself, as I recall.
  6. Kaden's dad is Kirby Honeycutt, right?
  7. I sure do enjoy your live updates, top_shelf.
  8. I'm not sure about that. Perhaps someone from the CC area has the answer to your question.
  9. It takes someone with enough money and resources to build a multi-purpose motorsports facility and then not worry about any return on their investment. For some strange reason, that person has yet to come forward!
  10. Not sure what you are trying to post....... Maybe I can help.
  11. Well, not totally false, Reb. When I was the motorsports editor for The San Antonio Light (one of two major daily newspapers back in the day), NASCAR pulled my press credentials over an article I wrote about NASCAR's pit lane policy. At the time, there was no speed limit on pit road and folks were getting hurt frequently during pit road incidents. I called for a speed limit and other changes that have since been implemented. NASCAR did not contact me directly, but rather wrote a certified letter to the Editor informing them that I was no longer welcome at NASCAR events. Around the same time, they pulled a similar stunt on Sports Illustrated. But their editor went publicly ballistic and NASCAR soon backed down, restoring both Sports Illustrated and my credentials - but without an apology.
  12. A relative informed me of the passing of Bill Lay, who flagged at San Antonio's Pan American Speedway, Paramount Speedway in Austin and San Antonio Speedway. Bill passed away this evening, July 17, 2023. Sad news for many of us who knew Bill. Nick
  13. There is no easy answer to the astronomical costs associated with asphalt short track racing. Claim rules have failed in many cases. Track owners are justifiably concerned about losing its "top teams" if the rule is strictly and consistently enforced. One proven way to make a class more cost effective while evening out the competition is to go with a "one-tire-a-week" rule. At San Antonio Speedway the rule generated increased car counts and closer competition when tires were the limiting factor. Were the well-financed teams happy with the rule? Absolutely not. But when the whole field was on equal tires, much of the expensive engine/drive-train stuff was basically useless since they couldn't get all that power to the ground due to the tire wear from previous weeks. Another way is to issue store-bought shocks to all teams and have them removed from every car after every feature event. Dyno a few of the shocks from top running teams each time and randomly reissue the shocks to teams before race events. Nick
  14. ASCS Gulf South Returns to Texas for the first time in Years and you can catch the action at TEXANA Raceway Park July 22-23.
  15. Quite true. Big money has indeed come to our dirt track community and expensive technological advances are following at an accelerated rate. In my opinion, the above scenario is a significant part of what is killing grass-roots asphalt racing. That, and well-intentioned, but woefully short-sighted track managers who allowed big-money interests to overrule common sense at every turn. It got so bad that only a very few resource-heavy teams dominated every class at local tracks across the country. Even today, the only really successful asphalt tracks run shows that draw deep-pocketed teams from around the country. Local asphalt oval racing is essentially on life support. Hopefully, experienced track officials - like Texas' Owen Pittman - will have the will-power and good business sense to curtail the influence of Big Money as it relentlessly pushes to escalate the cost of racing for the grass roots racers.
