When Ryan Newman came back to the first race at Darlington he was still 28th in points missing 3 races. Knowing the driver Ryan is there was no need to offer that deal for him. For context JH Nemecheck, Ty Dillon, Ryan Preece, Corey Lajoie, Daniel Suarez, Brennan Poole and Quinn Hoff have all run 31 races except for Suarez and Poole who have run 30 and Newman is still ahead of them. Kyle Larson has only run 4 races and is still 34th in points. Busch in 2015 missed the first 11 races and then came back for the AllStar race and first points paying race was the Coca-Cola 600 race #12. His first win came at Sonoma that year race #16. Remember he had to be in the top 30 in points and have a race win before they would let him in to the playoff. He didn't get into the top 30 in points until he finished 2nd at the Watkins Glen Race race #22. The last race of the regular season he was 25th in points with 1 win. 75 points over 30th place. Did they make the same exception for Ryan Newman after his injury this year (also in the Daytona 500)? nope... JGRPrivelege is right. they did give Ryan Newman and Matt Kenneth the same wavier. the difference is that neither of them made it to the top 16 in points or won a race. texasprd
There were races that Newman missed due to injury before the Covid-19 hiatus - so the Covid hiatus would not be a factor regarding a waiver. Nor was it an absolute requirement to be in the top 16 in points - when NASCAR announced the Busch waiver, they said he had to be in the top 30 (which Newman is, as Josh points out - 25th in points) and win a race. Granted, Newman didn't win a race - but he was leading Daytona at the time of his injury-causing wreck. Oh, well. Nathan
Kyle won at Sonoma, Kentucky, Loudon, Indy, before the playoffs started. if Kenseth or Newman would have won a race they would have been in the playoffs. Kyle wasn't giving a free ride into the playoffs. His wavier just like the 2 this year was about the races missed he still had to make it into the playoffs via a win or points. I cannot stand Kyle bush but he won races to make it into the playoffs then stayed in the points to be part of the four and won homestead. it took a couple season to get over that fact but he did it as he should have. rails
Nathan, the issue of wether Kyle got a free ride or not will always be up for debate. I personally don’t believe there should ever be a waiver for races missed. They all know the risk going in that it is a dangerous sport and they are at risk. And further more, he got injured during an xfiniti race. He didn’t have to be in that one. He knowingly jeopardized his cup season by being in that race. I feel a driver should miss no more than 2 races to remain in the hunt.
Josh42
If you want to talk about a screw job look at the rookie points this season. Cole Custer automatically won Rookie of the Year because he won a race and moved into the chase so the worst he could finish in points is 16th. The best Christopher Bell or Tyler Reddick could finish is 17th even though when they did the points reset both of those drivers were ahead of Cole Custer. rails
I get what you are saying. But a win as a rookie is pretty big. Rarely does it happen.

Nathan
I agree kyle should not have been givin a chance back then but we cant go back and change it. on the rookie of the year this year the other 2 rookies had just as much chance to win as Cole. tyler almost did at texas but that was the rules they sign up for at the beginning of the season.
