Logan Seavey is the newest Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Champion by Bryan Hulbert TULSA, Okla. (January 14, 2023) Winning his first Midget race in over a year on Friday, that was quickly joined with a win on the biggest stage in Midget racing Saturday night when California’s Logan Seavey held off the charge of Tanner Thorson to win the 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire. Richard Bales photo “I don’t even know yet,” chuckled Seavey when asked how it felt to win. “I’ll let you know tomorrow, but for now, it feels awesome. It really set in when they handed me the Driller, and I got to talk to Kevin a little bit. He deserves it, and will probably get a lot more, so to win this race is special, but to win it in the No. 39 on our first try is really cool.” The 23rd driver to top the Chili Bowl, the win is a first for Kevin and Jordan Swindell as car owners. The Swindell name now accounts for 14 overall wins in Chili Bowl competition. Of that, ten came with a Golden Driller. The pair’s time in Tulsa this year also included his first win as a car owner at the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout. A redo on the restart after trailing Hank Davis, the reset for a spun car saw Seavey rolling out with the lead. Chased by Cannon McIntosh, the No. 08 kept pace before finally getting the point on Lap 21 with a low side move off the fourth turn. In traffic shortly after, McIntosh held the position but would find his lead challenged following a Lap 30. Working the hub of the Tulsa Expo Raceway before varying his line at either end, Seavey took the Victory Fuel No. 39 back to the point on Lap 31. Taking second in the same breath, Tanner Thorson was in pursuit. Both changing up their lines to gain an edge on the other, the track finally migrated the field low with just a handful of laps to run. Trying to set up Seavey for a last lap run, the caution would bring about a green, white, checkered finish, with Seavey holding off the 2022 champion by 0.306-seconds. Falling back to fourth at one point, Cannon McIntosh was able to get back to third with California’s Shane Golobic in fourth. Emerson Axsom completed the top five. Making up ten positions, Kyle Jones stormed to a sixth-place finish, with Mitchel Moles in seventh. Trey Marcham from 14th land eighth, followed by Tim Buckwalter, who made an impressive run from 23rd to ninth. Justin Grant completed the top ten. The 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire saw 365 drivers officially draw in. During the Saturday Alphabet Soup, Claremore’s Kris Carroll set a new event record through ‘The Soup’ with seven races from the N-Feature to the H-Features. Saturday’s run of events was slated for double P-Features, but with drivers scratching, began with double O-Features. The 2023 Rookie of the Year and recipient of the Fuzzy Hahn Highest Finishing Female Award was California’s Jade Avedisian, who was the only rookie to lock into Saturday’s A-Feature. She is the second woman to do so, with Kaylee Bryson in her second consecutive. The 2024 Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire, takes place January 8-13, 2024, at the Tulsa Expo Raceway, located inside the SageNet Center in Tulsa, Okla. Logan Seavey uncatchable during Friday's Chili Bowl Qualifying night by Bryan Hulbert TULSA, Okla. (January 13, 2023) Getting the lead and never looking back, California’s Logan Seavey sailed the Swindell SpeedLab No. 39 into Victory Lane Friday night during Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tulsa Qualifying Night at the 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire. DPCmedia photo Asked what it means to win during the Chili Bowl, Seavey replied, “It’s even more special to do it with Kevin [Swindell]. He’s obviously one of the best to ever race here, so for him to come back ten years later since he’s won with his own car and have so much speed right away is something. For me, to put together a good night, it’s been a while, and it’s been over a year since I’ve won a Midget race, so to do it with him especially, it gets my confidence back where it needs to be.” The fifth time Seavey has started in a preliminary night feature, the win is the second of his career and first as a car owner for Kevin Swindell, who won the event as a driver from 2010-2013. Logan's previous win was for Keith Kunz in 2019. Taking the lead from the start, Seavey kept a quick pace over the race for second. Red on Lap 8, when Ethan Mitchell ended up hung in the fence after contact while battling with Justin Grant, the race resumed with Seavey doing much of the same. Working into traffic just past the race’s mid-point, Logan was able to move top to bottom on the slower cars while Grant railed the cushion. Closing one lap and losing the other was the theme until Lap 23, when a series of cautions put the field to the gutter for the remainder of the race. On Seavey coming to the white, Grant could not shake the No. 39, who took the win by 0.516-seconds. The NOS Energy Drink No. 2j protected for second, with Chase McDermand putting on an impressive run to third after starting 15th. Zeb Wise crossed fourth, followed by Jason McDougal. After exchanging slides in the race for second early on, Ace McCarthy ended up sixth, followed Jace Park. Eighth was Brian Carber from 13th, followed by Clinton Boyles in ninth. The top ten rounded out with Bryant Wiedeman. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tulsa Qualifying night included 76 drivers, bringing the total event count to 365, making it the second highest in the history of the event, after 2022, which had 281. Down to the final night, Saturday is presented by General Tire and will begin at 9:00 A.M. with P-Main and O-Main Hot Laps. Matthew Yates, former driver, flagman returns as new promoter at Boyd Raceway BOYD, Texas (Jan. 12) – He’s taken the checkers and he’s thrown the checkers at Boyd Raceway. Now, Matthew Yates’ next job at the Texas race track will be writing the checks. The retired driver and former flagman takes over as the promoter at Boyd, where four IMCA divisions run on Friday nights beginning March 24. “I grew up at race tracks so I’ve been part of this sport for 50 years and I’ve raced in just about every division,” said Yates. “I’ve got a good knowledge of racing and of racers, and I believe this is something I can do until I die. I’ll probably be at the race track when I do die.” Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Smiley’s Racing Products IMCA Southern SportMods and Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compacts will be IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing staples at Boyd through championship night on Sept. 1. “The competition in IMCA is good and I like the rules. They do the best at keeping the cost of racing at where it should be,” Yates said. “If you lose racers because of cost, you lose fans. If you don’t have people in the stands, you don’t have a show.” “From my prior experience as a driver and my experiences with other track officials, I have seen how IMCA stands behind their drivers and their promoters,” he added. “I believe IMCA is the best sanctioning body in the business.” IMCA STARS Mod Lites and the Texas Sprint Series also make a couple visits to Boyd during the point season. The weekly IMCA divisions fill the cards for the inaugural Richard Snyder Classic, in honor of the retired track owner and promoter, on Oct. 7-8. “We’ve talked to Richard and he said he’d still help at the track when we needed it,” Yates said. “I told him absolutely, we wouldn’t have it any other way.” The 2023 season will be the 29th consecutive year that IMCA has sanctioned the Modified division at Boyd. IMCA Stock Cars have run there since 1999, Southern SportMods since 2005 and Sport Compacts since 2011. Reconfiguring turns three and four and adding dirt around the quarter-mile oval are on the new promoter’s plate before the season opener, along with updates to the restrooms and some new coats of paint. Yates raced IMCA Modifieds, Stock Cars and Southern SportMods before turning his final laps with the Texas series for RaceSaver Sprint Cars. “I’ve been out to the track a lot and every time I pull in I remember a night I raced or a night I worked here,” he said. “I have a lot of good memories from Boyd Raceway.”

Tanner Thorson Dominates John Christner Trucking Qualifying Night by Bryan Hulbert TULSA, Okla. (January 12, 2023) Putting things in overdrive on Saturday night, Tanner Thorson served notice with an absolutely dominating performance on Thursday’s John Christner Trucking Qualifying Night at the 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire. DPCmedia photo What looked like a rocky start to his night with a spin in his OERB Heat Race, Thorson immediately bounced back to win his opening laps of competition. Sixth to second in his Team Toyota Qualifier, from there, it was lights out for the Maestro Classic/Bob Hurley RV No. 88 “I thought my prelim night was over at the start of that Heat Race. I was just kind of waiting to get hit, luckily enough I didn’t and was able to keep going,” stated Thorson on the start of his night. Working the top of the Tulsa Expo Raceway at all ends, the No. 88 went unchallenged through four cautions, with each one keeping the leaders from contending with traffic. Slowing down for the final time on Lap 24, the gap over second grew to 1.376-seconds at the finish. Chased the entire 30 laps by Emerson Axsom, the AME Electric No. 19t was solidly in second the entire race. A battle through several restarts for the show position, the spot finally went to fifth, starting Brady Bacon, who made the pass on Lap 24. Tim Buckwalter made it to fourth from ninth, with Tanner Carrick rolling from eleventh to fifth. Racing third from the start, the race with Bacon slipped Sarff out of his groove and slipped him back to sixth. Chase Johnson, in seventh, was pursued by California’s Ryan Bernal, who came from 17th to eighth. Dominic Gorden and Joe B. Miller made the top ten. Rico makes it Eight with Smiley’s Racing Products Qualifying Night Victory by Bryan Hulbert TULSA, Okla. (January 11, 2023) Making the move for the lead through the final two turns, Rico Abreu, threw the Hoosiers on the cushion and shot past Mitchel Moles for his eighth career Chili Bowl preliminary victory. Joe Orth photo Grabbing the win for Keith Kunz Motorsports/Curb-Agajanian, the triumph is the 34th in Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire competition for Keith as a car owner and is the 12th consecutive event that his team has won a Chili Bowl A-Feature. “Most important part is that the Torgerson family is in our prayers. It’s tough to be out there racing going through experiences like that, but we’re all racecar drivers here, and we’re all racing to win,” commented Rico in Victory Lane before talking about anything else pertaining to the race. Battling with Blake Hahn and Brent Crews through much of the last half of the feature, a caution with six to go reset the deck with Rico moving to the cushion while Moles and Crews worked the bottom. Grabbing second with two to go, the James Hodge Auto Group No. 24 closed the gap to car lengths at the white flag. Pinning the cushion off the final turn, Rico pulled ahead by 0.223 seconds. On the race-winning run, Rico said, “Towards the last half of the race, I could make up some time. After that last restart with six to go, I saw Chad (Boat) tell him to go down, so I just went up. I wasn’t going to follow him. It was just a pretty easy decision for me.” Moles in second is his best career preliminary performance and locks him into his first career Saturday night feature event, while Brent Crews held on for third. Fourth went to Blake Hahn, with Kevin Thomas, Jr. completing the top five. Wednesday’s field included 79 drivers, bringing the event count to 217 for the week. Continuing to feature the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series, World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Models and Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds, the 2023 edition of World Finals will see Qualifying (for Thursday and Friday’s programs) for the three series completed on Wednesday and then full race programs for each series Thursday through Saturday – like last year, points earned throughout the week will set the lineups for Saturday’s Heat Races. It all culminates to the electrifying championship finale on Saturday where the 2023 champion will be crowned from each series at the end of the night. “Expanding the World of Outlaws World Finals into a four-day show last year proved to be a success, giving fans an extra day of exciting racing and another chance to meet the drivers, but we realized to enhance that experience we wanted to give fans a chance to see all three series every night,” said Jeff Hachmann, World Racing Group executive director of events. “Now, the championship storylines will build all four nights for each series.” Wednesday will be all about speed. The Low-E Insulation Qualifying rounds for the Sprint Cars, Late Models and Big Block Modifieds will showcase the fastest laps of the week as drivers will be keen to find every ounce of speed their car has, pushing every component to its limit. Where they line up could not only determine their chance to win, but also their chance for a title. The first round of qualifying for each series will set the lineup for Thursday’s Heat Races, then they’ll do another round of qualifying to set the lineup for Friday’s Heat Races. After Qualifying is compete, a Pit Party will be held. Fans will then be treated to full race programs — minus qualifying — the rest of the week for all three series. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 5pm (ET) on Thursday and Friday and 3pm (ET) on Saturday. Saturday’s event will also feature the flag ceremony and fan-favorite 3X4 Wide Salute to the Fans with cars in all three series on the track at the same time. On Thursday and Friday, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars are scheduled to run a 25 lap Feature, the World of Outlaws Late Models 25 laps and the Super DIRTcar Series 30 laps. For the finale on Saturday, the Sprint Cars are scheduled to run a 30 lap Feature, the Late Models 50 laps and the Big Blocks 40 laps. Oklahoma's Hank Davis Pulls Off The Upset On Warren CAT Qualifying Night by Bryan Hulbert TULSA, Okla. (January 10, 2023) A race of ups, downs, and every direction in between, Tuesday’s Warren CAT Qualifying Night came down to the wire with Oklahoma’s Hank Davis proving the underdog still has a shot at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire by fending off Spencer Bayston for his first career preliminary night victory. Brendon Bauman photo “I couldn’t have even dreamed of this day,” said Davis of the win. “I’m here, and I still can’t believe it, but Matt Seymour gave me an awesome racecar. I just can’t thank him and this team enough. I live 20 minutes from here, so my bed is not very far away, so I’m going to go home and cherish this for a long time.” Taking his first green in a Chili Bowl preliminary A-Feature from the third starting spot, Davis and Michael Pickens began going at with Kameron Key in the mix early. Contact through a close slide job from Pickens, Davis hit the brakes to let the No. 4x go. Trying to keep Pickens from being able to turn under him, the pair made contact again in the fourth turn, with Pickens, unfortunately, going over. On the incident, Davis said, “I feel really bad for getting into Pickens there. I checked up earlier for him in the race, but I still want to apologize to him, Dave Mac, and all their guys. I’m not here to destroy racecars, and that was never my intention.” Back to green with Buddy Kofoid leading, the No. 71w was well in command until disaster struck on Lap 7. Not able to slow fast enough for a crash in the first turn, Kofoid shot a narrow gap between the car and the wall. Putting the right-side tires up the wall and rolling away, the gap was not enough to avoid a damaged front end. Putting the lead in the hands of Hank Davis, the No. 29s would restart with Spence Bayston chasing. Having already charged through from the 12th starting spot, the battle heated up with 14 laps to go. Back to speed after a caution for Jake Bubak, Bayston slid to the lead off the second turn but could not fend off the slide at the opposite end of the track. Repeating the sequence through the next two laps, the battle brought Kyle Jones and Jade Avedisian into the battle. Whild Davis held point, Bayston would fall to second on Lap 20. Finally getting the position back with six laps to go, Spencer found himself trailing by a straightaway. Using small mistakes on the part of Davis to his advantage, Bayston was there at the white flag. Turning low into the final two turns, the momentum wasn’t there to complete the slide, with Davis getting the upset win by 0.290-seconds. With the runner-up finish, Spencer Bayston locked into the show for the fifth time. Winning the fight for third, California’s Jade Avedisian became the highest-finishing woman in preliminary night competition. Kyle Jones ended up third from 14th, with Jonathan Beason rolling to fifth from 11th. Kaylee Bryson matched her 2022 preliminary night performance with a sixth-place run, followed by Chance Crum from 19th. The hard charger of the event, Tim McCreadie, made up 13 positions to finish eighth, with Zach Daum in tow from 17th. In the mix early, Missouri’s Kameron Key slipped back to tenth. Tuesday’s field included 68 of the scheduled 70 entries, bringing the week to 134 so far. The World Wide Technology Raceway Flip Count ballooned to 19, with everyone able to walk away. Cannon McIntosh Holds on for Cummins Qualifying Night Victory by Bryan Hulbert TULSA, Okla. (January 9, 2023) Fending off the field is one thing but doing so with a failing right rear tire made Cannon McIntosh’s win during Monday’s Cummins Qualifying Night even sweeter at the 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire. DBIII photo “That yellow coming out, I didn’t know if it was a good or bad thing, not knowing how many laps were left, but I had zero confidence going into the restart. I could hear the right rear just rolling over in the corner, and I could feel it every caution lap we rolled, but thankfully there were only three to go,” explained McIntosh of the situation. “I knew these guys would be coming pretty quick there, and obviously, the top got pretty quick, so I was just worried when I moved back down that they were going to get a run, but I think the right rear going down didn’t hurt me more than just how good the top was going to be at the end." Cannon’s third preliminary night win in five years, all of which have been on Monday, the Gear Wrench No. 08 led from start to finish but was not without pressure as Chris Windom spent the race stalking McIntosh. Keeping the NOS Energy Drink No. 89 at bay through the start, Cannon had to fend off Chris through restarts on Lap 4 and Lap 7, all while Windom was under attack from Ryan Timms. Getting clear of the No. 67 on the restart, Shane Golobic began working his way into the picture. Varying lines at both ends of the Tulsa Expo Raceway until Lap 20, when traffic came into play, that forced Cannon to move to the cushion while occasionally dipping down to the hub when the path cleared. Letting Windom begin closing an over two-second gap that would go to nothing when the caution waved on Lap 28. Changing his tactics on the restart, Windom tried to slingshot the first two turns but would not get the pass. Nursing the car through the final green flag run, Cannon still managed to take the win with a 0.454-second advantage over the race for second, which saw Shane Golobic steal the transfer into Saturday’s A-Feature by 0.099-seconds. Chris Windom, third, was followed by Trey Marcham. Moving up from 12th, Chase Briscoe made it to fifth. Gavan Boschele, from 11th, was followed by Ryan Timms with Kyle Spence in tow. Jacob Denny from 20th rolled to ninth, with tenth going to Daniel Adler, who charged through the field from 22nd. Monday’s field included 66 of a scheduled 68 entries and included the O’Reilly Auto Parts Invitational Race of Champions. A nail-biter of a race, the annual tradition of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Race of Champions brought the crowd to their feet, with Spencer Bayston adding his name to the list of winners in the event's fifteenth edition. Battling early with Rico Abreu, the pair went slide for slide for several laps, with Rico holding off the No. 1s until Lap 12. Getting space over the field, the closing laps would welcome a new challenger. Charging the hub of the Tulsa Expo Raceway, Bixby’s Cannon McIntosh closed the gap to car lengths as the pair raced to the final three laps. Just needing a chance to pounce, the final trip to the back stretch saw Bayston waiting on the car off the cushion of the second turn. Giving Cannon a run into the final two turns, it would not be enough as Cannon slid off the bottom enough to let Bayston win the drag race to the line. Rico Abreu crossed third with Logan Seavey, who raced as high as third on Lap 10, ended up settling for fourth, while Tanner Thorson completed the top five. There are cheaters who blatantly cheat and hope they don't get caught. Usually, they are neither bright enough nor good enough to use their cheating to their advantage. Rarely do they even make it to the tech pad. Those are the guys who go around saying that they know the winner is cheating because our team is cheating and they're beating us. LOL There are cheaters who have found innovative ways to cheat with little likelihood of getting caught. Those guys and gals usually run up front. Then here are cheaters who just love to cheat for the fun of matching wits with the tech officials. Then there are those who take no delight in winning by cheating. They do their homework, use the rules to their advantage and are almost always accused of cheating. They are winners. Now, some of us like to leave a few obvious clues around that could possibly mislead our competition. My favorite was to mislabel our springs but keep very good records on a spreadsheet as to the actual spring rates. Then when we made a spring change, we'd leave the spring we were replacing lying around for all the world to see. And we'd put the new spring out on the ground before we put it the car. Some of the rates were so far off from reality that it was a riot to see an unsuspecting team handle like crap after changing their springs to match! LOL Nick

Jack was quite visible around the sport for many years. He was a serious racer and was respected by many of us. Sad to know he’s gone. Prayers for all impacted by his passing.

I have always believed that SAS can indeed come back to life, if: - Someone with enough expendable resources and unlimited desire were to make it a priority in their life. - The City of San Antonio actually got behind the project and would be willing to help cut through all the mountains of red tape it would take So far, asking for volunteer help doesn't seem to fit either of those criteria.

The address is listed variously as Von Ormy or San Antonio, depending on whatever. But it's the same property located at the corner of Watson Rd and Hwy 16 South.

Sounds like fun! Seems like we've been down this road a few times over the years....

There is a new FB page up and running called San Antonio Motorplex. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089245173818 Those of us who were a part of the old San Antonio Speedway keep one ear to the ground hoping to hear that someone is going to rebuild the iconic half-mile. So far, any rumors, hints, plans, etc, have been unfounded. There seem to be more reasons these days not to rebuild than say, 10 years ago. - There are residential neighborhoods (not planned neighborhoods - actual neighborhoods with people living in them) within easy earshot of the old speed plant - There are businesses currently using the dragstrip property for lots of permanent looking ventures - The city and county are very aware that the land that the track sits on is basically a toxic mess in need of remediation - The oval track property has basically rotted into the ground with the exception of the massive steel structure supporting the grandstand which former owner Frank Howell built and the flatter portions of the racing surface that seem repairable. The soil supporting the turns has eroded to the point that both ends would need lots of work. Now, that being said, someone with enough money and desire could find a way to restore SAS, but I'm not saluting the San Antonio Motorplex flag just yet. Nick
