  1. More from Ed Bowles, Jr. I don't know if anyone really cares about old stuff like this since most of the folks who raced in San Antonio in the 1950s and 60s have passed on, but I have some other old pics related to the two Pan American Speedways. Nick, my dad first became involved with the Pan American Speedway on Austin Highway as a car owner in the early 1950s. He eventually became the race promoter there. He also built the Pan American Speedway on Toepperwein Road and managed that track through the 1968 racing season. He sold his interest in that track after that season. Over the years, I've heard lots of inaccurate information about the origin of the Toepperwein Road race track, but the truth is that my dad was one of two principal stockholders at the outset. Travis Jenkins was the other. They each held 45% of the stock. There were three other minority stockholders who held the other 10%. Following is a pic of my dad overseeing the Pan Am track on Austin Highway being paved in the mid-1950s (I think the year was 1956, but I'm not 100% sure). He managed the track for one season while it was still a dirt track, but quickly concluded that San Antonio does not have a climate conducive to dirt track racing, so he paved the track. 2. April and May showers shake up USMTS schedule WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (May 21)--After what seemed like the longest winter in a generation, a remarkable amount of rainfall and severe weather has saturated the first two-thirds of spring and given fans, racers and racetrack operators a severe headache. With Memorial Day Weekend looming, just nine nights of USMTS racing have been completed (two of those were qualifying nights at King of America IX). In contrast, more nights were wrapped up by the third week of March during last year's campaign. In 2017 the series had nine shows in the books before the end of February and 28 races were run leading up to Memorial Day Weekend. Because of this, several events have had to be shuffled on the USMTS schedule. After more than three weeks of silence thanks to Mother Nature, the USMTS will fire back up this Friday, May 24, at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis. On Saturday, the rugged road warriors return to the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., and Sunday will see the swing wrap up at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa. 5. Danny Dietrich wins World of Outlaws debut at 3/8-mile Bridgeport Speedway Sweat masked Danny Dietrich’s face. His breathing adjusted to the need for an extra pocket of air. His boisterous posture tired, but a smile stayed. The Gettysburg, Pa. native wore the appearance of a lonely diver seconds after surviving a shark attack. And in his own way, he did. Dietrich won his fifth World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series victory Tuesday night in the Series’ debut at the 3/8-mile Bridgeport Speedway. To claim it, he fended off attacks by David Gravel, Carson Macedo and 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz – who even stole the lead from him late in the race. “It was pretty nerve racking,” Dietrich said after the 35-lap Feature. His night started on a less nerve-cringing note, setting Quick Time in Qualifying – making him the current track record holder for the new 3/8-mile track configuration. From there he went on to finish second in his Drydene Heat race to Schatz and then won the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash. His Dash victory lead to concern, though. He and his team discovered an issue with the rear end of their No. 48 car and had to change it. While sweat leaked from Dietrich and his crew, their nerves never faltered. Focused and determined, the Dietrich team, along with help from others were able to replace the car’s rear end in about 15 minutes. Having a new rear end in the car was of no concern to Dietrich, but the new brakes were. “We rolled out there (for the Feature), we had new brake pads and rotors. It needed to set the brake pads in a little bit,” Dietrich said. “We didn’t have very good brakes there rolling around before the green flag. They came in. That’s the only thing I was worried about.” When the green flag flew, all that matter was the throttle. He mashed it, jolting to the lead over second-place Macedo and put several car lengths between them by the end of the first lap. At the same time, Schatz – who was hungry for a win after getting passed for the win last week – almost found himself off the track on the first lap and fell from third to 10th. He wouldn’t stay there long, though. At the front, Dietrich enjoyed a clear race track for six laps before catching lap traffic. Behind him, Gravel worked his way by Macedo for second-place and could sense the blood in the water with lap cars slowing Dietrich’s pace. The Watertown, Conn. native looked for déjà vu when lap cars helped him pass Dietrich at Williams Grove Speedway and he went on to win. Gravel had set himself up to make a pass of Dietrich, finding grip on the bottom of the track, but a caution came out for a car stopped on the front stretch. When the race went back green, Gravel didn’t let Dietrich pull too far away. Macedo didn’t let the No. 41 car get away either. On Lap 11, Macedo got by the No. 41 car, while Gravel tried to set himself up for another pass on Dietrich. At the same time, Schatz had made his way to fourth-place, steadily making his way back to the front. For the next two laps Gravel and Macedo traded positions, while Schatz waited for his moment to strike. Macedo eventually won the battle for second-place with seven laps to go. Less than a lap later he was back in third, as Schatz found his way by Gravel and continued the run past Macedo. Next was Dietrich. With three laps to go, Schatz snuck under the No. 48 car in turns three and four and took the lead. “Slow down and just be patient,” Dietrich said is what he told himself at that point. “When he passed me, I hit the bottom of (turns) one and two and I just had to slow down and just wait for the moisture. It felt like I was just going so slow, but patients.” A lap later his patients paid off. Dietrich slid underneath Schatz in turns three and four and fended him off to be the first Series winner on the 3/8-mile configuration of the Bridgeport, NJ track. “Good hard, racing,” Dietrich said. “I’m sure he’s not happy to finish second, but I’m real happy to win.” Digesting the result back at his hauler, Schatz said he wishes he could have pulled off the win but isn’t hanging his head too low. “He did a little better job when I got by him and I probably should have used up more of the track a little bit,” Schatz said. “But, hey, it’s racing. There will be another one tomorrow.” Schatz also continues to hold the points lead over Brad Sweet – extending it to a 36 point lead. Daryn Pittman remains third – 74 points back – and Gravel, who finished third, remains fourth – 80 points back. “The track was awesome,” Gravel said. “It was really racey. A lot of grooves. Just disappointed I didn’t get my wing back earlier. We had a good enough race car to win. Just got stuck on the bottom a little bit. I should have kept my speed up a little bit more.” Dietrich had the track figured out all night. Why? How? “I have no idea,” he said with a chuckle. Wiping the sweat from his face and regaining a normal breathing pattern, Dietrich just knows he survived the big sharks of the World of Outlaws – a special present on his 31st birthday. 10. What is the surface of the track that you will be running at? Asphalt? Dirt? Clay? If dirt, is the track usually tacky or dry slick or rubbered up for the main event?
  11. Could you share the tire rules for that class? It would sure help to know what we're giving advice about...
  12. NOTE from Nick: : Received this from a friend who has been directly involved in Motorsports for 50 years. For what it’s worth, the Indycar event at COTA was a disaster for traditional motor racing fans. To make a long story short, the two IndyCar events I attended in Houston were immeasurably better than COTA, and that says a lot from the guy who always said that Indycars are always better on natural road courses. The racing was great but I watched it from home since the “wandering around” talked about in the article was severely restricted by the COTA structure set up for general admission attendees. I attended on Friday and there was a lot of talk about how expensive it was. Imagine my shock when I got inside and saw that general admission was only allowed to watch from the hillside near turn 1 and the hillside exiting the triple apex turn by the tower. All other viewing areas required a reserved seat and that was not clear before purchasing the ticket. I told my son, “It’s not Road America, it’s not Mid Ohio and it’s not Barber Motorsports Park! Hell, it’s not even the Astrodome parking lot!” Great work Epstein, only people like you could destroy Indycar’s spectacle. This experience leads me to the belief that the Indycar streaming fee is a super bargain and I only wish I had known of the “COTA experience” before I laid out such a ridiculous amount of money. PS. The racing undercard was only partially fun with the Indylights just about as spectacular as the actual Indycars. But the money they charged for the fans to watch Miatas drone around a big track, and Stadium Trucks to look just plain stupid was dismissive to fans. Stupid me, I expected to see Formula Mazda and 2000. Fooled me again. Just my two cents. What a debacle.
  13. This also from Ed Bowles, Jr. Here's a bonus tidbit...the famous NASCAR northeast modified driver "Bugs" Stevens also got his racing career started at the Pan Am Speedway on Austin Highway in the 1950s, when he was in the Air Force and stationed at Lackland AFB. Don't have any pics of him racing at Pan Am, but found one of him at the Corpus Christi track. If you can't quite make out the names in the caption: Bottom Row left to right are: Jc Monroe, Ronnie Miller, Dub Rollins, Bobby Bellew, Tommy Davis and H.JM. Colley Standing are: Bugs Stevens of Brownsville (He was actually stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio at the time), Gene Evert of Aransas Pass, Buddy Mack of Aransas pass, A.D. Sparks, Johnny Rollins, Paul McDowell and George Jackson
  14. NOTE from Nick: Ed Bowles, Sr., Ed’s father, was the great person who ran several speedways in the San Antonio area, including Pan American Speedway. Here's a little bit of Pan American Speedway trivia. In the early 1960s, a kid named Alan Dillard started racing at the old Pan American Speedway on Austin Highway. I vaguely recall that he drove a blue 1940 Ford sedan. His car number was 2. (I don't have any pics.) He soon thereafter moved to North Carolina and became a successful businessman. His interest in racing continued, although he stopped driving race cars in the 1970s. He went on to start a NASCAR Busch Grand National race team in the 1980s with drivers such as the Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, Rick Mast, and Ward Burton. The team won 13 Busch races. In 1994, he secured Hardee's sponsorship and moved up to the Winston Cup series with Ward Burton as the driver. In 1995, Burton moved on to Bill Davis racing. Greg Sacks, Jimmy Hensley, and Gary Bradberry drove for Dillard in the 1995 season. He closed his race team after the 1995 season because it had become too costly. Dillard passed away last week at the age of 80... https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/charlottesville-va/alan-dillard-8309720 Probably no one else in these parts knows this little bit of racing trivia. Now you do. - Ed

  16. What a great addition to this thread. Thanks for posting, Gregg! I hadn't realized how many pages are in this thread until I sat down to read from the beginning.
  17. I think it's great that Josh's family is making the effort to support a worthy cause Let's stay positive and help make a difference in these kids lives. Thanks.
  18. The Southern United Sprints is stoked to be able to travel to Texana Raceway Park in Edna for the July 20, 2019 event. This race pays $750-to-win, Let's pack the stands and bring a full field to give them our 3 wide American Salute with some super tight winged action.
  19. Perhaps the HOF folks should make it a requirement to gain entry to the HOF. LOL
  20. Gotta admit that I exceed the speed limit quite a bit, toyotatim. Even when I'm doing 85 in a 70 mph zone I certainly don't feel like a criminal. But if and when I get caught, the law sees me as one and I'd better pay the fine or else... Having been a tech official for two different tracks and six different racing series, I have to agree with you that some racers feel it's OK to cheat and see what they can get away with. But when they get caught, a good many of them raise hell with tech, accuse the track of favoritism and start a major "they did me wrong" campaign on social media. While cheating may be all part of the game to some competitors, to the track or series it's serious business and often ends up with the track suffering financial repercussions when drivers organize boycotts and mount negative campaigns on the internet to protest their innocence.
  21. I know several personally. And not just because I know them as honest folks, but because I was directly involved with their racing program. Was every effort made to use the rules to our advantage? Of course, but that's 100% different than bending or breaking the rules. I don't blame you for staying incognito, toyotatim, because you're pretty much saying that the team(s) you are familiar with (or perhaps even work with) are cheating. Nick
