  1. MICHAEL DAY, CAME, SAW & CORRALLED BUFFALO SPEEDWAY PARK Canton, TX (6/7/19) - The first-ever sprint car event at the new Buffalo Creek Speedway in Canton is now in the books, and when the dirt, occasional raindrops and side-by-side racing settled, Michael Day would take a solid feature race victory in what was also the first-ever visit of the Sprint Car Bandits to the facility. 20 sprint cars would be in the pit area with 17 taking the green flag in the 25-lapper in front of a full house. The fans spoke and the results are in, and the bottom line was them commenting on how an exciting and entertaining event it was. A grand total of 3 cautions slowed the show – but that included all the heat races too. Nary a car was torn up during the course of the event. SCB points leader Will Eggimann would get caught up in an incident when a car spun directly in front of him, and that resulting contact would bend his torsion arm, making the car a real handful to drive throughout the remainder of the event. But it wasn’t a Day runaway. Early leader, Louisiana’s Koty Adams, would fire off to a blazing pace on the wide paper-clip ¼ mile. Then, with no warning Adams would suddenly lose traction all on his own, resulting in a single-car spin and sending him to the back. On the restart, Day would take the point and never be seriously challenged the remainder of the event. Thank you to the Canton area fans for showing up in droves for this event – all with a forecast that said ‘dry’, yet the reality, with massive rains just to the west and throughout the Metroplex. The feature event was concluded at 10:52pm. A pair of drivers would score their highest SCB series finish ever, with Bryan Debrick finishing in 2nd and Josh Hawkins third. Casey Burkham would recover from an early spin to finish 4th, while Dale Wester had another solid run finishing in 5th. Here’s the finishing order: 2 Michael Day ($1,500/winner) 10 Bryan Debrick ($1,000) 80 Josh Hawkins ($600) 45B Casey Burkham ($500) 12 Dale Wester ($400) 71 Colby Estes ($390) 91 Craig Oates ($380) 21X Michelle Melton ($370) 77W Will Eggimann ($360)5 Jeremy Jonas ($350)74E Claud Estes ($340)02 Cody Freeman ($330)23 Junior Jenkins ($320)8a Koty Adams ($310)47 Chipper Wood ($300)27 Kodey Keimig ($300)M1 Chase Parson ($300)Thank you to everyone that supported the event, which featured sprint cars racing two and three-wide throughout the racing program. 3. Logan Schuchart holds off Kasey Kahne Racing teammates for River Cities Speedway victory With his grinning shark teeth painted helmet in one hand and the checkered flag in the other in Victory Lane at River Cities Speedway Friday night, Logan Schuchart accomplished more than just another win. He did what no World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series driver has done since 2014 – win more races than 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz a third of the way through the season. By claiming his fourth win of the season at the Grand Forks, N.D. track, Schuchart is now the winningest driver this year. Schatz and David Gravel are behind him with three wins each. “To lead the Outlaws in Series wins this time of the year is a pretty cool accomplishment, for where you look at where this team was six years ago and how it started and where we’ve come,” Schuchart said. Last year, the Shark Racing driver had two wins in total for the season. He won four races in total in 2017 but has yet to surpass that number in a single season. He’s knocking on the door to beat that record now – especially with his performance on the 3/10-mile track to claim his 12th career Series victory. He started the night winning his Drydene Heat race and then won the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash. In the 40-lap Feature, Schuchart did not favor sharing the lead. The record book will show he led every lap. However, Gravel and Australian James McFadden have stories that say otherwise. At the start of the Feature, Schuchart was a shark racing minnows. He pulled away from second-place Brad Sweet by almost a straightaway, leaving the top-five to figure out their running order as they swapped positions lap after lap. Some cranked their car sideways to the bottom of the track, while others tempted disaster by riding the outside rim of the turns, hoping to not slide off track and down the steep embankment on the other side. Hope was not enough to keep several drivers on track. Carson Macedo brought out the first of seven cautions by going off track in turn three. On the restart, Gravel went from fourth to second in the first turn, while Kasey Kahne Racing teammates McFadden and Brad Sweet battled for third. Running the high side, Gravel found enough traction to eat into Schuchart’s lead, getting to his outside by Lap 15. However, before he could attempt a pass. Another caution for a car going off track. On the following restart, Gravel launched ahead of Schuchart, taking the lead and pulling away to a two-car length lead. It was short lived, though. Exiting turn two, Gravel slid off the corner allowing Schuchart to dart back by him. The lap went to Schuchart. There was no sharing the lead. “It’s tough when you’re leading to be able to tell where to go, when the rubber or where the rubber’s coming in,” Schuchart said. “Actually, in the beginning, when Dave got around me, I knew he got a run from the top of three and four, but it actually wasn’t totally rubber, yet. I knew he had to get a run from the top, so I moved up in three and four and I wasn’t going to move my line in one and two until I saw somebody or heard somebody.” While Schuchart put distance between himself and the top-five once again, the KKR teammates were now battling for second – continuing their spectacular battling from Tuesday night’s race at Fairbury Speedway. Riding the low line of the slick track, McFadden found enough traction to pull ahead of Sweet and begin his march toward Schuchart. Round two of Schuchart versus McFadden, after the two raced for the win a couple of weeks ago at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. Schuchart won that battle. McFadden ran Schuchart down. He could stay on his bumper, but couldn’t find a big enough run to get by the Hanover, Pa. driver. Then, on a restart with 13 laps to go, McFadden found that run. He launched pass Schuchart on the outside and sailed away. This time, it looked like Schuchart would have to share the lead. But before McFadden could complete the lap, another caution. McFadden showed his hand. Schuchart now knew what he had to do to win. “I wasn’t squirting off the bottom as hard as I needed to in (turns) one and two and it was cleaned off a little bit above the bottom,” Schuchart said. “He (McFadden) showed me that, and lucky enough the caution did come out.” When the race went back green, McFadden could keep Schuchart close enough in sight to read the sponsors on his car, but never garnered enough of a run again to get back by him. “Once Logan’s out front on that kind of track, he’s probably one of the best guys at racing that,” McFadden said. “I think he was holding back, trying not to get to lap traffic, thinking if he didn’t make a mistake, he wasn’t going to get past. I was just sitting there waiting, and hoping, and it didn’t happen. Still happy with second.” While Schuchart claimed his fourth win this season, Sweet, who ended up third, earned his fourth podium finish in-a-row. “We’ll keep plugging away,” Sweet said. “As long as we’re standing on the front stretch each and every night, the wins will start coming.” Sweet, with two wins this season, continues to sit second in points to Schatz. But with Schatz finishing fourth, the Grass Valley, Calif.-native gained two points on the reigning champion and is now 36 points behind him. Being the winningest driver, so far, this season has injected Schuchart with pride and confidence. Although, the amount of wins he has won’t mean anything if he can’t find consistency. His performance this year has left him fifth in points -- 202 points behind Schatz. “It seems one night we win, the next night we’re fifteenth,” he said. “We’re going to keep working at it, try to figure it out and hopefully pick up some more wins.” UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws will continue its tour through the Northwest on Saturday, June 8, at Granite City Speedway in Sauk Rapids, Minn. 4. Dreams of Redemption Turn to Reality for Davenport and Clanton at Eldora ROSSBURG, OH – June 7, 2019 – Redemption seemed to be the theme of the Friday night portion of Eldora Speedway’s Dirt Late Model Dream. Jonathan Davenport, of Blairsville, GA, grabbed a feature win just one night after giving it away on the last lap, and Shane Clanton, of Zebulon, GA, dominated the competition in his feature event and went to Victory Lane for the first time in Dream action since his $100,000 win in the 2012 finale. Group A Competition On Thursday night, “Superman” Jonathan Davenport set himself up for a tremendous run to a preliminary checkered flag, winning his heat race and redrawing the outside pole. He led every lap in his feature… except the one that mattered most. 2003 Dream winner Darrell Lanigan, of Union, KY, made a spectacular move on the final lap to get by Davenport and steal the win. Davenport wasn’t exactly crushed by the outcome, as those runner-up points are very good, but said afterwards that he shouldn’t have been so hesitant to change lanes on the track to keep the momentum up. Friday night’s race, however, was a different story. Redrawing the outside pole from a runner-up heat race finish, Davenport took the lead from 2017 Eldora Speedway Track Champion Kent Robinson, of Bloomington, IN, on lap two and never looked back, leading the next 24 laps to claim his fifth career Dirt Late Model Dream preliminary feature event. But it wasn’t exactly a brisk walk in the park… The race started with smooth sailing for Davenport, until he ran into troublesome lapped traffic with 10 laps remaining. Mason Zeigler and Ashton Winger were battling it out at the rear when Davenport arrived at their bumpers, holding him up and allowing Robinson to close the gap. Davenport said he could feel the pressure coming from behind, before doing what he failed to on the previous night – move up the track to get by slower traffic. “I could watch the video board and I saw Kent Robinson getting a little closer to me,” Davenport said. “So, I went to the top one lap just to try it, I caught just a little bit of the cushion and that got me just enough of a run down the back-straightaway where I could clear Ashton.” That decision proved to be the move of the night for the 2015 Dream winner, as it opened the gap between he and Robinson up just enough for the laps to run out. Davenport is now the high-point man headed into Saturday’s big show and should find himself in the front of a heat race, ripening his chances to become a two-time Dream winner. “Can’t thank the guys back at the Longhorn [chassis] shop enough, and my own crew guys that work on this thing,” Davenport added. “We’ve got a really good program right now, everything’s going good and I think we’ll be fine for 100 laps.” Group A Feature Results 1. 49D-Jonathan Davenport[2]; 2. 7R-Kent Robinson[1]; 3. 7W-Ricky Weiss[5]; 4. 29-Darrell Lanigan[6]; 5. 20-Jimmy Owens[9]; 6. 18X-Michael Page[3]; 7. 44-Chris Madden[4]; 8. 1-Brandon Sheppard[10]; 9. O-Scott Bloomquist[12]; 10. 23B-John Blankenship[8]; 11. 8S-Kyle Strickler[11]; 12. 28M-Jimmy Mars[13]; 13. 40B-Kyle Bronson[7]; 14. 16T-Tyler Bruening[14]; 15. 8H-Jacob Hawkins[17]; 16. 99JR-Frank Heckenast Jr.[18]; 17. 50-Shanon Buckingham[22]; 18. 17-Zack Dohm[23]; 19. 99RT-Ricky Thornton Jr[21]; 20. 88R-Andrew Reaume[15]; 21. 12W-Ashton Winger[24]; 22. 25Z-Mason Zeigler[19]; 23. 24-Dylan Yoder[16]; 24. 88-Trent Ivey[20] Group B Competition Before Friday night, it had been seven years since the last time Shane Clanton visited Eldora Speedway Victory Lane in a Dirt Late Model Dream. Now, “The Georgia Bulldog” is back, and prouder than ever to get another win this season for Capital Race Cars, on one of the grandest stages in the sport. “This means a lot,” Clanton said. “We’ve come close in a couple preliminaries and led a lot of laps in the Dream and the World [100]. Hopefully, tomorrow, we can lead all 100 of them.” Clanton put together a great, all-around effort in Group B action on Friday, winning his heat race and redrawing the outside pole. He swiped the lead away from Ross Bailes, of Clover, SC, at the drop of the green and floated through lapped traffic, leading all 25 laps to claim his first career preliminary Dream feature win. Through all of the work that he, his crew, teammate Chris Madden and chassis builder Marshall Green have put into their program this season, Clanton said it was the little adjustments that made the biggest difference. “We’ve changed a lot, not necessarily components on the car – just tweaking here and there,” he said. “It’s hard to make the right adjustments at the right time. That’s where we seem to struggle. We’ve got speed, we just need to make it at the right time.” On Thursday night, Clanton said it was a mistake in his heat race that cost him a spot in the redraw and a subsequent top-five finish in his feature. But the veterans know how to leave the past in the past and keep searching for future improvements. “We didn’t show up last night because we started further back and I messed up a little bit in the heat race,” he said. “If we would have gotten into the redraw, maybe started on the front row, maybe we could have won last night. We made better adjustments for the feature last night, we worked on that today and got it even better.” What a weekend it has been so far for the driver out of Mt. Holly, NC, Chris Ferguson. After having such a rollercoaster start to his 2019 campaign (multiple mechanical failures, 2 wins), “Fergy Time” has found his stride at Eldora this weekend. “We’ve been fast, but this year has just been up-and-down,” he said. “Any time you can put it together at one of the biggest races of the year, that just makes it even better.” With an 11th-to-4th effort in Thursday’s feature, Ferguson followed it up with a second-place effort to Clanton in both his heat race and feature on Friday. Starting third in the feature and making the pass for second around Bailes on an early restart, Ferguson made every effort to catch Clanton, but came up just one spot short of his first career victory at Eldora. “I would have loved to have been a little bit better to keep up with Clanton, but we’re tickled to death with second,” he said. “It was fun. The car was good, we needed a few adjustments and I think we could have been a little bit better, but we had a good race with Ross for second on the restart. Any time you can get a car to hook-up on this track, you’ve got to be happy, and we are with second.” Group B Feature Results 1. 25C-Shane Clanton[2]; 2. 22-Chris Ferguson[4]; 3. 87-Ross Bailes[1]; 4. 18-Chase Junghans[5]; 5. 5-Don O’Neal[6]; 6. 17M-Dale McDowell[11]; 7. 14-Josh Richards[3]; 8. 39-Tim McCreadie[15]; 9. 0B-Shannon Babb[8]; 10. 3S-Brian Shirley[10]; 11. 1T-Tyler Erb[9]; 12. 157-Mike Marlar[12]; 13. 71-Hudson O’Neal[20]; 14. Saturday’s Dirt Late Model Dream action will get underway with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. ET, culminating with the 100-lap, $125,000-to-win finale!
  5. Lanigan and Weiss Headline Thursday Night Action at #DLMDream25 ROSSBURG, OH – June 6, 2019 – The 25th running of the Dirt Late Model Dream started out with everything the Dirt Late Model world was hoping for on a Thursday night – clear skies, warm weather and a record car-count not seen in 7 years. The only thing left on the list was some incredible racing from the industry’s best competitors. And boy, did they ever deliver on that. 92 of the best DIRTcar Late Model drivers in the world packed the pit area and put on a show the Eldora Speedway crowd would not soon forget, starting with Darrell Lanigan’s incredible last-lap pass for the win over Jonathan Davenport in Group A’s Feature. Fellow World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series regular Ricky Weiss also put the moves on his competition, driving around World of Outlaws veteran Chris Madden and Thursday’s fast qualifier Jacob Hawkins to pick up his very first win at Eldora in the Group B Feature. Group A Competition: Lanigan came right out of the gate swinging, setting fast time in Group A and picking up a redraw spot from his second-place effort in Heat 1. Meanwhile, Davenport qualified 10th in the group, but muscled his way to a victory in Heat 2, setting him up for an outside-pole redraw. From the drop of the green, every fan in attendance likely thought it was going to be another smooth-sailing cruise to victory for “Superman.” He hit a thick part of lapped traffic on lap 10, but expertly maneuvered through it to hold his lead over Chatham, IL’s Brian Shirley. But this advantage would fade quickly, as Lanigan put a strong move on Shirley going down the backstretch on lap 15. With 10 laps remaining, “J.D.” was now a sitting duck. Without a doubt, Lanigan’s Club 29 car was the fastest machine on the racetrack in the final laps, as he closed the gap rapidly. With three laps left, there was almost no gap between he and Davenport, and that’s when Lanigan knew it was time to crack the whip and set up to make the move. Two lapped cars sat in Davenport’s way – Brandon Overton on the low side, John Blankenship on the top. With no choice but to get off the bottom, Davenport moved to the middle-top in turns three and four to take away Lanigan’s line, coming to the white flag. Naturally, Lanigan turned it back underneath Davenport and drag-raced him down the front-stretch. “Once we took the white, I saw a black car beside me and I didn’t know who it was,” Davenport said. “It sounded like he was in the gas pretty hard, so I figured it was somebody.” Into turn one they raced, and with minimal contact, Lanigan drew a nose in front of Davenport. They drag-raced again down the backstretch, around Overton, and when Davenport slipped way up to the top in turn three, Lanigan saw just enough room to get by underneath and made the most of it. Davenport made a last-ditch effort to try and swipe the spot away on the bottom, but to no avail. It was over. The “Bluegrass Bandit” had won the third Dirt Late Model Dream preliminary Feature of his career, and what a ride it was from his perspective. “I got a good run off the bottom [of turn three] and got up beside him,” he said. “We rubbed a little bit getting into turn one, and then we went three-wide with the lapped car. I think Davenport was rubbing the wall [back into turn three], but we came out ahead, and it was fun.” On the other side, Davenport knew he had let one slip away, but was in light spirits, as a second-place finish in a preliminary feature gave him a great start to his weekend in event points. “I think [my night] went really well, up until the last 200 yards,” Davenport said with a chuckle. In hindsight, Davenport said sticking to the low line may not have been the absolute best idea, but knows of how also refusing to move from the high side has cost him wins at the very same track in previous starts. “I just didn’t move off of the bottom fast enough,” he said. “I was just concentrating on running around the bottom and should have moved up.” “But I’ll just take those growing pains,” Davenport continued. “Keep them in the back of my head and remember to move around a bit more.” Group A Feature Finishing Order: 1. 29-Darrell Lanigan[5]; 2. 49D-Jonathan Davenport[2]; 3. 3S-Brian Shirley[3]; 4. 22-Chris Ferguson[11]; 5. 39-Tim McCreadie[1]; 6. 1P-Earl Pearson, Jr.[7]; 7. 22S-Gregg Satterlee[10]; 8. 1S-Chad Simpson[4]; 9. 25Z-Mason Zeigler[8]; 10. 71-Hudson O’Neal[16]; 11. 83-Scott James[14]; 12. 40B-Kyle Bronson[6]; 13. 88R-Andrew Reaume[15]; 14. 18X-Michael Page[18]; 15. 28-Dennis Erb, Jr.[20]; 16. 32S-Chris Simpson[12]; 17. 17-Zack Dohm[21]; 18. 23B-John Blankenship[19]; 19. 2-Brandon Overton[17]; 20. 32-Bobby Pierce[23]; 21. 1ST-Johnny Scott[13]; 22. 99JR-Frank Heckenast, Jr.[24]; 23. 24-Dylan Yoder[9]; 24. 2H-Nick Hoffman[22] Group B Competition: The story of Ricky Weiss’ drive to victory in Thursday’s Group B Feature was not as dramatic as Lanigan’s, but just as exciting to watch. Weiss laid down a lap of 16.041 in qualifying, only good enough for 15th in Group B. However, with the lineup procedure for the Heat races, Weiss started on the pole in Heat 4 and won, setting himself up for a fourth-place redraw effort. And did he ever make the most of it… Right from the drop of the green, the Turk Enterprises, Sweet-Bloomquist chassis #7 was a rocket ship. He made the move underneath Chris Madden on a crossover move out of turn four to take the runner-up spot on lap 4 and wrestled the lead from Jacob Hawkins by lap 10. From that point onward, it was smooth sailing for Weiss. Nobody was able to even come near the black-and-orange #7, as he led the final 16 laps to claim his very first Feature win at “The Big E.” “From the second we pulled in, my crew unloaded the car, and we’ve all been pretty confident on that car and that program,” Weiss said. “This is one of our favorite tracks, and we knew, coming in, that we’d be something to contend with.” As expected, Weiss and the crew had a lot of Scott Bloomquist’s teachings in the back of their heads on Thursday night, and were especially proud to pick up the victory for his brand. “This was just an awesome race for the Bloomquist cars. It just goes to show how strong we really are,” Weiss said. Meanwhile, Chris Madden got the bounce-back finish he needed on Thursday, fighting for the runner-up spot with Jacob Hawkins early and finally running off with the spot on lap 13. He held that spot and looked very strong the rest of the way – a much-needed boost of confidence after experiencing some mechanical misfortunes in previous weeks’ competition. Group B Feature Finishing Order: 1. 7W-Ricky Weiss[4]; 2. 44-Chris Madden[2]; 3. 8H-Jacob Hawkins[1]; 4. 17M-Dale McDowell[7]; 5. 20-Jimmy Owens[8]; 6. 25C-Shane Clanton[9]; 7. 28M-Jimmy Mars[3]; 8. 1T-Tyler Erb[5]; 9. 157-Mike Marlar[12]; 10. 1-Brandon Sheppard[16]; 11. 0B-Shannon Babb[6]; 12. 7R-Kent Robinson[14]; 13. 7M-Donald Mcintosh[15]; 14. 18-Chase Junghans[11]; 15. 33-Jonathan Henry[10]; 16. 50-Shanon Buckingham[13]; 17. 87-Ross Bailes[18]; 18. 8S-Kyle Strickler[23]; 19. O-Scott Bloomquist[19]; 20. B1-Brent Larson[24]; 21. 99RT-Ricky Thornton Jr[17]; 22. 16T-Tyler Bruening[22]; 23. 5-Don O’Neal[20]; 24. 14-Josh Richards[21] With Lanigan’s and Weiss’ victories on Thursday night, it marks the first time in event history, since the 2013 format change, that a single night’s preliminary Features were both won by full-time World of Outlaws drivers. Day two of #DLMDream25 at Eldora Speedway gets underway on Friday, June 7, with the drivers meeting at 5 p.m. and hot laps at 6:30.
  6. Gustin rolls to third straight USMTS win at West Texas Raceway LUBBOCK, Texas (June 7)--Only Mother Nature has been able to stop Ryan Gustin this week as 'The Reaper' reeled off his third straight Summit USMTS Southern Series win in five days Friday night at the West Texas Raceway. Courtesy of USMTS PRAfter winning last Sunday at the Creek County Speedway to break a dry spell of more than a year, Gustin won Tuesday's event at the Superbowl Speedway before the shows on Tuesday and Wednesday were rained out.An opening-lap caution moved Gustin from the third starting spot to the outside of the front row for the start of the 40-lap main event, but it was 2015 USRA Modified National Champion Jake Gallardo jumping out from the pole position to lead lap 1.Gallardo ran a smooth race up front but Gustin was able to overpower the Las Cruces, N.M., racer on lap 12 and went unchallenged the remaining 28 circuits to claim the $3,000 winner's share of the prize money.Jake O'Neil scooted past Gallardo for second but Dereck Ramirez blew by both and secured the second spot for another top-five result while O'Neill, Gallardo and Terry Phillips were the rest of the first five to reach the checkered flag.Hunter Marriott and Rodney Sanders each passed eight cars to finish sixth and seventh, respectively, but Marriott garnered the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award by virtue of his higher finish position.Fito Gallardo held on for eighth ahead of Joe Duvall, who rebounded from the opening-lap incident to score a ninth-place paycheck. Meanwhile, Logan Robertson returned to the racetrack after destroying his previous ride last month and finishing tenth at the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval.Amarillo Saturday: The five-day swing wraps up Saturday with the 10th Annual USMTS Amarillo Ambush presented by Genesis Racing Shocks at the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo. This will be the tenth meeting of the USMTS and the tough regional and local USRA Modified racers in West Texas and New Mexico where past USMTS events have played out in front of standing-room-only crowds.Hometown favorite Rodney Sanders captured the inaugural event in 2010, added a second trophy to his case in 2015 and a third in last year's stop. Other winners here include Kelly Shryock, Jason Hughes, Randy Timms, Stormy Scott, who won back-to-back races in 2013-2014, and Ryan Gustin. The Route 66 Motor Speedway is a popular racing destination for drivers and fans in the Texas panhandle. The facility has a seating for 4,000 race fans plus handicapped parking, stadium lighting, full concessions and several luxurious V.I.P. booths. For race teams, the racing surface at Bill Worthen's speedplant is a generous 75 feet wide in the turns with 20 degrees of banking, and 65 feet wide down the straight-aways with five degrees of banking. The pits have concrete pads available with lighting and water.Street Stocks, Limited Late Models, Sport Mods and 305 Sprints will also be racing. The pits open at 4 p.m., grandstands gates swing open at 6, hot laps start at 6:30 and racing begins at 7 p.m.Adult tickets are $15. Seniors and military are $12. Kids ages 12 and under are $5. 7. SATO EARNS POLE FOR INDYCAR'S DXC TECHNOLOGY 600 FORT WORTH, Texas (June 7, 2019) - Takuma Sato checked another box off his stellar open-wheel to-do list Friday when he qualified on-pole for the DXC Technology 600 at Texas Motor Speedway. Sato will start the first night race of the IndyCar Series season from P1 after lapping TMS' high-banked/1.5-mile quad-oval in a two-lap average of 220.250 mph. "Taku" scored his ninth career pole and first in Cowtown at the wheel of the No. 30 ABeam Consulting Honda fielded by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. "The team gave me a great opportunity, a great weekend," said Sato, a 43-year-old native of Tokyo. "Here in Texas I've been dreaming about the pole because it's such an iconic oval track. (Starting) front row here is safer but for the end result it will be a completely different scenario. At this track, anything is possible. "The team gave me unbelievable speed ... going that fast through the corners. Huge credit to my engineer, Eddie Jones." Sato will be joined in the two-car front row by Scott Dixon, the defending event winner, after his effort of 220.162 mph in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda fielded by Chip Ganassi Racing. Dixon, a three-time winner here, will be looking to join Team Penske's Helio Castroneves of Brazil as the only four-time winners of "America's Original Nighttime INDYCAR Race." "It was close but congrats to Taku," said Dixon, the five-time/reigning series champion from New Zealand. "I don't feel like we did too much wrong in that run ... got loose in Turn 2 and scrubbed some speed but it's a great starting position for us. Interesting to see some of the big-hitters struggle, maybe trim too much and couldn't go flat. "Always nice to start on the front row ... just wish you could do a little bit better on-pole." Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais will start third after lapping at 219.746 mph in the No. 18 SealMaster Honda fielded by Dale Coyne Racing. Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport will start fourth after his run at 219.537 mph in the No. 28 DHL Honda. Reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Simon Pagenaud leads the Chevrolet contingent in fifth after his run of 219.355 mph in the No. 22 DXC Technology Team Penske entry. The Frenchman finished second to Dixon, who led the race's final 119 laps, last June. Series point-leader Josef Newgarden, Pagenaud's teammate, will start seventh after lapping at 218.666 mph in the No. 2 Fitzgerald USA Chevrolet. Newgarden has a 15-point lead over Alexander Rossi of Andretti Autosport. Rossi will start 11th after lapping at 218.295 mph in the No. 27 GESS/Capstone Honda. The top qualifying rookie was Colton Herta, driver of the No. 88 GESS/Capstone Honda fielded by Harding Steinbrenner Racing. Herta averaged 218.406 mph during his two-lap run to qualify 10th. Tire degradation continues as a key issue heading into Saturday night's 248-lapper. Firestone Racing has supplied nearly 1,300 tires for on-track activities here including practice, qualifying and the race. Each entry has received 14 sets of Firestone Firehawk race tires. Thursday's rained-out night session was scheduled to allow teams to practice in conditions similar to what they likely will experience Saturday night. As a result, sanctioning body INDYCAR ordered all teams to scrub-in four sets of tires during an extra 30-minute session that preceded Friday's one-hour practice. After tire-testing here in October 2018 and this past March, the Firestone Race Tire Engineering team has brought a faster-wearing right side compound that is more heat-resistant on the 1.5-mile layout. The right-side construction and the left side tires are the same as last year, according to Cara Adams, chief engineer, Bridgestone Americas Motorsports. Live television coverage of the DXC Technology 600 will be carried on NBC Sports Network beginning at 7 p.m. (CDT). For tickets go to www.texasmotorspeedway.com or call the Ticket Office at 817-215-8500.

Self will make his seventh NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) start at the 1.5-mile track but eyes his first top-10 at his hometown track. In his previous six starts, Self has maneuvered a best finish of 12th in 2017 – but has also finished inside the top-20 five times. Eager to get back to the race track, Self hopes the standalone Texas race brings the opportunity to earn his sixth career top-10 Gander Outdoors Truck Series finish. “Super excited to get back to Texas Motor Speedway,” said Self. “We’ve been working hard on our Texas truck the last few weeks. Texas means so much to me being the track I grew up watching races and also have the support United Sorghum Checkoff Program along with GO TEXAN. “Always a big week when we show up in the home state.” For the ninth NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) race of the year and second time this season, AM Racing will carry the brand of the United Sorghum Checkoff Program, while also commemorating GO TEXAN and their 20th-year celebration. The 23-year-old Self also hopes his final visit to the Lone Star state this season will provide the chance to get his AM Racing track back on track after a two-race slide at Kansas and Charlotte respectively. “Texas is the perfect place to get our year back on track,” Self added. “Texas is so fun to race. The new Turn 1 and 2 is almost like a road course corner, where you can overdrive it easy. It makes for some really good racing and makes you think about your passing opportunities. It’s going to be a good show on Friday night, and I can’t wait to get there.” The United Sorghum Checkoff Program and Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 70th career start. 13. Kyle Larson out duels Kasey Kahne Racing teammates to claim first ever World of Outlaws back-to-back victories Your heart tried to explode. If you stopped to think you’d realize you weren’t breathing. But there was no time for that. Every lap, every corner, the potential for a new leader. A new reason to not blink. James McFadden? Brad Sweet? Kyle Larson? Your mind spun with the question of who will win, unable to find a clear answer as the three drivers dueled with the intensity of gladiators fighting to be the last man standing. Then the dust settled. A moment of quiet ease spread around the quarter-mile Fairbury Speedway arena. Climbing atop the wing of his No. 57 machine to thunderous applause and an explosion of confetti was Larson – claiming his eighth World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win Tuesday night. The win gives him back-to-back World of Outlaws victories, after winning his last Series race at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Memorial Day. “Cool to get a win back-to-back with the Outlaws, I’ve never done that before,” Larson said. The last time he won more than one World of Outlaws race in a season was back in 2013 – a year before he went full-time NASCAR Cup Series racing. Larson had to duel with fellow NASCAR competitor Christopher Bell and 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz to claim the win at Lawrenceburg. This time around, he had to face the dominate Kasey Kahne Racing duo of McFadden and Sweet. The KKR teammates started the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown event going first and second in practice with Sweet pacing the field. The No. 49 car then backed up its speed in Qualifying by setting Quick Time. McFadden was third. Larson seventh. Sweet then won his Drydene Heat race with ease. Larson and McFadden dueled for the win in the third Drydene Heat race of the night with Larson dominating the field. McFadden came back with force, charging to the win in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash. Sweet finished third, and Larson sixth – setting their starting position for the 40-lap Feature. McFadden wrestled with his 900hp machine, taming it like a wild stallion at the start of the Feature to take the early lead. His run was cut short by a red flag on the first lap for Dylan Tuxhorn rolling over in turn one. When the Feature went back green, heart rates amplified. Breaths were held. McFadden led, but Sweet was charging for a fight. The two teammates traded lanes lap after lap, corner after corner. Sweet could power his way to either the inside or outside of the orange No. 9 car into the turn, but McFadden could launch off the exit with the power of the gods. While they dueled, Larson slayed the competition between him and the leaders with ease. By Lap 13, he gave the KKR duo something else to fear. Going into turn three he forced his car under Sweet, making it a three-wide battle through the corner – a common theme throughout the next several laps. Sweet built up a strong enough run to steal the lead from McFadden on Lap 17. He couldn’t shake him, though. McFadden and Larson stayed on his bumper and the next time around they both snuck by him. McFadden threw his car low in turn three, while Larson squeezed his car between the outside of Sweet and the wall. McFadden reclaimed the lead and now had a fierce Larson to contend with. The next lap, back in turns three and four, McFadden, again, went low and Larson high. The god-like launches McFadden could get exiting a corner were no match for the resilient throttle hungry Larson. The two traded the lead for the next couple of laps with Larson eventually prevailing. McFadden still had fight left in him, though. And not far behind was Sweet, lurking. Waiting for another opportunity to strike. In the closing laps, with the leaders having to navigate lap traffic, Larson couldn’t lose McFadden. The Australian was building momentum lap after lap, inching closer and closer to Larson. But then, with eight laps to go, McFadden’s battle came to an end. While stuck behind a lap car through turns one and two, McFadden hit the corner tire and spun to a stop. “Really fun race track,” said McFadden, still with a smile, after the Feature. “It was awesome racing with Brad and Kyle. They’re obviously a couple of the best guys in the country. I don’t know if I just misjudged the lap car. He got the tractor tire I think and slowed him a bunch. I just got into the back of him and when I did that, the tractor tire came out, after he hit it, and I got it and that was that. At the end of the day, it was a positive step for the team.” In the remaining eight laps, Larson now had to contest with a hard charging Sweet. Larson stuck to the bottom of the track – the least likely place for him to make a mistake, he said. Sweet took advantage of that, soaring around the outside of the speedway to find as much grip as he could to catch the white No. 57 Silva Motorsports car. Coming to the checkered flag, Larson faltered. He slid off turn four, scrubbing speed and allowing Sweet the opportunity to strike one final time. The distance between the leaders was still too much for Sweet, though. Like a warrior on a steed signifying his victory, Larson sprinted to the checkered flag with his front two wheels off the ground. “That was just an exciting race from start to finish for me,” Larson said. “Shoot, 40 laps around this place was crazy. It felt like we swapped the lead a lot. Just an awesome race track. Short tracks are always a blast.” Sweet’s runner-up finish helped him cut into Schatz’s points – now only 38 points behind the reigning champion. He said he felt like he had the better car, but probably got too timid in lap traffic, compared to Larson’s maneuvers. “He’s crazy,” Sweet said about Larson with a grin. “He was bouncing off the wall in (turn) one and bouncing off the wall in three and four.” Larson would agree with Sweet’s sentiment. “I’m always all out,” Larson said. “I don’t even know how I would be if I was running for points with the Outlaws. It would be hard for me to change my driving style. I’m just crazy, yeah.” That craziness makes speed though, he added. The kind of speed that made your heart explode with excitement. Your breath run and hide. And your mind spin with questions. But there was no time to worry about that. Because every corner, every lap, there was the potential for a new leader. A new reason not to blink. UP NEXT The World of Outlaws will next trek to the Northwest on Friday, June 7, to River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D. As always, you can catch all World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series action on DIRTVision.com. For tickets and more information, go to www.WorldofOutlaws.com. 14. Photo Finish Goes To Travis Rilat At The Devil's Bowl With The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series by Bryan Hulbert MESQUITE, Texas (June 4, 2019) Winning by a nose in a last-lap drag race, Travis Rilat wheeled his MDS Boring and Drilling/BDS Motorsports No. 29 to Victory Lane over the Sage Fruit Co. No. 52 of Blake Hahn at the Devil's Bowl Speedway on Tuesday night with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series Presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network. A very emotional win for the BDS Motorsports Team, Rilat's 28th career National Tour triumph came in a car that was built 20-years ago for the late Ronald Laney. "I'm not going to say these guys had an advantage over us, but we've got a 20-year old racecar here. It's not a raised-rail car, so every time I'd go through the corner and hit a rut, the car was dragging the ground and slowing me down, but this was one of Ronald Laney's last cars. We drug it out about four years ago, went through it, and ran it a couple of times but it's just been sitting in the shop so we decided to get it out and give a go. Mark [Laney] always talked about how fast this thing is, and it was," stated Travis on the front stretch of the Devil's Bowl Speedway as Mark Laney checked the tires of the No. 29. Asked what it meant to see a car built for his son win with Travis behind the wheel, Mark replied, "I can't hardly explain it. This just brings tears to my eyes." Getting the lead from Blake Hahn on Lap 16 when the No. 52 bicycled multiple times through the first and second turns, Rilat rolled into traffic with Sam Hafertepe, Jr. glued to his back bumper. Pulling next to Travis numerous times, the driver of the No. 29 was able to fend off the charge of the three-time Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series Presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network Champion. Tip-toeing through traffic as the race progressed into the final five laps, Rilat and Hafertepe were quickly joined by Blake Hahn. Rebounding with a furious run after falling to fifth, Hahn made it a three-car fight for the lead on Lap 22. Scrambling around a slower machine into the first turn, the battle was put on hold as Matt Covington went for a ride off the third turn following hard contact with an infield tractor tire. Into second on the restart, Hahn checked top and bottom for room to make the pass. Building a run to the final lap, Hahn hit the low side the final two turns as a misstep by Rilat off the fourth turn kicked the ShopTheBoss.com No. 29 sideways. Wheel to wheel to the front straightaway, Rilat barely edged ahead of Hahn for the win. Getting the final step on the podium, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. regained the lead in the 2019 Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series Presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network Driver standings by a pair of markers over Blake Hahn. Harli White crossed fourth with John Carney II emerging as the night's Hard Charger with a run from 14th to fifth in the Mesilla Valley Transportation No. J2. Making up three positions, Wayne Johnson crossed sixth with Scott Bogucki in seventh. Jake Bubak grabbed eighth with Jamie Ball ninth. Making up five positions, Robbie Price completed the top ten. The second round of the 2019 ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek, a field of 27 drivers were on hand with three SCE Gaskets Heat Races won by Scott Bogucki, Blake Hahn, and Sam Hafertepe, Jr. The lone BMRS B-Feature was topped by Jordon Mallett. One provisional was used by Casey Carter. The next event for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series Presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network is Wednesday, June 5 at Lawton Speedway. Gates open at 6:00 P.M. with the action getting underway at 8:00 P.M. Admission is $20 for adults with discounts for Senior, Military, and Kids 13-15 paying $15. 16. Gustin grinds out USMTS victory at Creek County Speedway KELLYVILLE, Okla. (June 2)--Ryan Gustin roped himself a rugged victory Sunday night when the USMTS invaded the Creek County Speedway for the 2nd Annual Bullring Badass presented by Bravado Wireless, AmeriFlex Hose & Accessories, Pizza Express and Duvall Electric. Courtesy of USMTS PR Following up last year's inaugural event where fans were treated to a caution-free 40-lap barnburner, another epic battle in the tight confines of the 35-year-old quarter-mile dirt oval produced another 40 circuits of rush hour traffic."It was elbows up, no doubt," said Gustin, who rode into the USMTS winners circle for the first time since the final night of the Featherlite Fall Jamboree on Sept. 23, 2017. "I broke something in the left front there and, man, that thing was tight on entry."I didn't want no more laps, that's for sure. I was wore out and the car didn't want no more either."Unfortunately for USMTS national points leader Rodney Sanders, his tire only had 30 laps in it. In the heat of a three-way tussle between himself, Dereck Ramirez and Gustin, Sanders slowed on the exit of turn 2 which allowed Ramirez and Gustin to scoot past while Sanders came to a stop in the next corner.Following the caution flag with ten laps remaining, Ramirez was able to nose in front of Gustin to lead lap 31, but 'The Reaper' came storming back on the high side to take the lead for good with eight to go.From there, Gustin rode the dangerous but faster high line to the checkered flag with Jake O'Neil advancing to claim the runner-up spot while Ramirez held strong in third. With last year's winless season and a rash of mechanical woes since March of 2019, the win was just what the doctor ordered for the two-time USMTS National Champion."We've just had some tough luck you know; That's how it goes," said Gustin, who unveiled his new livery last weekend with new sponsor Spike Hardcore Energy. "We can't be having any more failures or anything going on, so we have to stay on top of our maintenance program."It was Gustin's 95th career triumph-third on the USMTS all-time wins list."Hopefully maybe Cedar Lake on Saturday is 100," Gustin added, referencing the 20th Annual Masters, June 13-15. With seven features races on tap between now and then, anything is possible with cooperation from racing gremlins and Mother Nature.Terry Phillips and Mike Striegel each passed a dozen drivers en route to finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, in Sunday's main event. With the higher finishing position, however, Phillips earned the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award.Driving a car owned by event promoter Joe Duvall, former USMTS regular Randy Timms garnered a sixth-place paycheck while local favorite Chad Davis drive past 11 cars from his starting spot to get seventh. Saturday's winner, Hunter Marriott, took eighth, Sanders rebounded for ninth and Kyle Ledford scored his second top-10 finish in as many nights.Lap sponsors kicked in an additional $4,100 to the top three runners each laps. Lap sponsors for the event included 23 Motorsports, All American Forklift, Angela Hibbs Rodan + Fields, ARMI Contractors, ASAP Battery Service, Brandon Givens Racing, Bulletproof Tees, CCA Investments, TMSDirt.com, Chris Ross Racing, Dishman Equipment, Diva Dogs, Dizzy Dean Electric, Dozer Finance, driveWFX.com, Hibbs Funeral Home, Maria Farmer, McSperitt Construction, Mike's Flagpole Service, Ottesen Design, Pizza Express, RacinDirt.com, Shannon Scott's Henryetta Ford, Steven Bowers Racing, Tiernan Farms, Tonto Construction, United Cellular Services and Wild Bill White (Keith White), plus memorials for Junior Duvall and Mike Clark.Bergman Tax & Accounting put up $300 and Fast Shafts awarded a new carbon fiber driveshaft to the driver passing the most cars all night. T&S Beverage of Salina provided $100 cash to the first two non-qualifiers and ARMI Contractors stepped up with additional cash for non-qualifiers.The Front Row Challenge presented by Grady Smith and Smith All-Fab offered $2,500 to any driver starting in the front row who could tag the tail of the field and win. Nobody accepted the challenge. After Sunday's show, teams get a 24-hour rest prior to a five-race excursion through the Lone Star State and the Summit USMTS Southern Series powered by MSD. On Tuesday, the series slithers into the Superbowl Speedway in Greenville before making a "hump day" trek to the 82 Speedway in Petty. The Monarch Motor Speedway in Wichita Falls hosts the USMTS road warriors on Thursday, Lubbock's West Texas Raceway is the venue for Friday night's action and the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo will welcome the tour on Saturday. For those unable to be there in person to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells, enjoy the next best thing with every lap of every race in every division every night live at RacinDirt.com.To learn more about the United States Modified Touring Series, visit USMTS.com or call (515) 832-7944. 17. Josh Richards roars to first LOMDS win of the season COLUMBUS, Miss. (May 30, 2019) - Josh Richards picked up his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season on Thursday night a Magnolia Motor Speedway. The Clint Bowyer Racing pilot scored the win on night one of the GEICO Clash at the Mag - presented by Big River Steel. Courtesy of LOLMDS PR Richards made a clean sweep of the night's racing activities as he set the Miller Welders Overall Fast Time, then won his heat race to earn the PFC Brakes Pole Award. He later led the final 15 laps of the 25-lap main event to cap off a perfect night. Tim McCreadie grabbed the lead from his fourth-starting spot on the opening lap. McCreadie led until Richards passed him for the top spot on lap 11. Richards then fought off side-by-side attempts from McCreadie to become the eighth different series winner of 2019. McCreadie finished in second, followed by Richards' teammate, Don O'Neal. Defending Clash at the Mag winner, Hudson O'Neal was fourth and Mike Marlar took the fifth spot in his first LOLMDS appearance of the season. "At the start of the race we spun our tires a little bit," said the 31-year-old racer who scored his 26th career series victory. "I tried to pace myself through the middle of the track. I didn't want to get too boxed in behind lapped traffic. He [McCreadie] got close a couple of times. We have had a lot of speed lately, but we just haven't been able to put it all together. This was just a 25-lapper but it feels good to get the victory. Anytime you run laps, you run hard. The way the format is this year it was important to get off to a good start tonight." McCreadie was also looking for his first LOLMDS win of the year but continues his string of strong finishes with his runner-up performance. "I got off to a good start, then had a little bit of a driver error. I should have gotten down on the bottom. This is such a nice racetrack. We will take a second and come back tomorrow night and hopefully get one spot better. We are trying our best to help our Longhorn Chassis drivers. We can't do a lot of testing like some of these other guys, but I think we can hold our own against them." Don O'Neal, who is a two-time Clash at the Mag winner, completed the podium with his third-place run. "Congratulations to Josh and his crew. They needed a win just like we did. I thought where we started tonight, we could get it done, but we had a good points night and we'll come back together and give it another try." The winner's Clint Bowyer Racing, Rocket Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by IRacing.com, Peak Antifreeze and Coolant, Ford Performance, DeKalb, BlueAg and Integra. Completing the top ten were Earl Pearson Jr., Tyler Erb, Stormy Scott, Devin Moran, and Jonathan Davenport. 18. Marriott dominant in USMTS stint at Tri-State Speedway POCOLA, Okla. (June 1)--Two runner-up finishes to close out Memorial Day Weekend with the USMTS was a prelude to things to come as Hunter Marriott improved to first place Saturday night at the Tri-State Speedway to claim his second career win in his rookie season. The 27-year-old shared the front row on the main event starting grid with two-time USMTS National Champion Ryan Gustin, who led the opening lap from the Sybesma Graphics Pole Position.Undaunted, Marriott battled back to steal the lead from 'The Reaper' one lap later. He never relinquished the top spot again despite six caution flags that kept the field within striking distance.MSD Performance USMTS Mid-American Series points leader Dereck Ramirez came closest to producing a challenge for the lead but fell short by four car-lengths in the end after coming from 15th.Terry Phillips rebounded from a mid-race skirmish to snag the third spot from Hughes late in the race while 13th-starting Rodney Sanders rounded out the top five finishers.Mike Striegel earned both the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger and Eibach Spring Forward Awards for his run from 22nd at the drop of the green flag to sixth at the finish line 35 laps later.Jake O'Neil wound up seventh, followed by a trio of Arkansas pilots: Kyle Ledford, Trevor Latham and Tyler Wolff. 19. Shane Stewart beats Brent Marks for Music City Outlaw Nationals win in thrilling show Among the music halls and concert venues of Nashville, there was no bigger stage than the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series’ Music City Outlaw Nationals at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway Saturday night. Thousands of buoyant fans filled the grandstand. Spotlights gleamed off the brown clay quarter-mile oval surface. The prize, a guitar shaped trophy, $25,000 in winnings and the pride of making history; becoming an inaugural Music City Outlaw Nationals champion. That kind of stage can birth a star. Rejuvenate a career. Coming up on almost a year since winning a race, that’s exactly what Shane Stewart needed. His winning performance Saturday night showed it. In spectacular fashion, the Oklahoma-native claimed his first win of the season with his new CJB Motorsports team and his 34th career World of Outlaws win. “Big stage, big win for this team,” Stewart said. With one win during the 2018 season, Stewart was released from his ride with Kyle Larson Racing at the end of the year. At the same time CJB Motorsports parted ways with its then driver, David Gravel – a pairing that never finished worse than third in points together. The two paired together for the 2019 season, starting the season off strong in Volusia by leading laps and finishing second in the opening race. From there on out, races of disappointment and wins that could have been. It was a scenario Stewart almost had to cope with again. With a pinch of luck, Stewart’s team drew an early Qualifying order position, leading to the No. 5 car being second fastest to Brad Sweet’s track record breaking 14.083 sec. time. Stewart then went on to win his Drydene Heat race and finish second in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – putting him on the outside pole for the 30-lap Feature. Throwing his car around the tight turns of the quarter-mile track, Stewart took the lead on the first lap of the Feature and put distance between he and second-place lap after lap. His early run was cut short by Daryn Pittman spinning and bringing out the caution on Lap two. On the restart, Stewart set sail again. Behind him, though, lurked another driver just as eager to return to Victory Lane. In the early stage of year, Brent Marks missed two Features and didn’t find the top-10 until the tenth race of the 2019 season. The Myerstown, Pa.-native earned his first top-five during the first round of the Music City Outlaw Nationals Friday night and was poised to do better on night two. Marks methodically charged his way from fourth to second by Lap five. Two laps later, he found himself to the outside of Stewart down the front stretch. The two went side-by-side into turn one. Marks high. Stewart low. Stewart slid up the track in turn two, allowing Marks to dart underneath him exiting the corner. But before he could complete the pass, a caution came out for several cars tangled in turn four. Marks showed his hand. Stewart now knew there was no cruising to a win. The battle was on. When the race went back green, Stewart stuck to the high side, while Marks ran low. The red No. 19 car showed its nose to Stewart turn after turn. Until Lap 11. Marks finally found enough traction on the bottom of turns three and four to pull past Stewart for the lead. He cleared the No. 5 car the next corner, but Stewart wasn’t ready to watch another potential win slip away. He launched his car around the outside of Marks through turns three and four and charged back to the lead. Marks then returned the move by throwing his car to the bottom of turn one and sliding up in front of Stewart in the center of the turn. Stewart cut underneath Marks, but couldn’t find enough traction to challenge Marks again for the position. Marks was on his way to a historic win. Lap traffic soon became an obstacle, though. Stewart kept Marks in his crosshairs, giving the Pennsylvanian no room for error while the track slicked up each lap. With nine laps to go, Marks misjudged his drive into turn one around the outside of a lapped car and hit the cushion. His error allowed Stewart to dart past him and reclaim the lead, again. The win wasn’t his, yet. Marks stayed close behind and with three laps to go Sweet made it a three-horse race for the win, challenging Marks for second. And even though Stewart reclaimed the lead, he knew it was going to be a battle to keep it. “I don’t think I had the best car, but I knew once we got in to lap traffic, I had to be patient,” Stewart said. “I knew the bottom was going to be key.” Stewart cautiously slid his car to the bottom of the track each turn and eased back on the throttle off of it, leaving no opening for Marks to make a run. He did that with fine-tuned precision, leading to a standing ovation by the crowd as he soared past the checkered flag. “It’s special,” Stewart said about the win. “Being the inaugural race here at Nashville. So many people here that came out to support the World of Outlaws, which is really cool to see. Just a big win. I don’t know where it ranks, but it’s up there for sure.” For Marks, he was left meandering by his car, contemplating what could have been. But he still had fun. “It actually was a lot of fun,” Marks said. “I thought the track was in real good shape there for the Feature and made it racy for us. Sort of took a little bit of rubber there toward the end. It wasn’t like lock down rubber, so when you’re following lap cars around and keep hearing people behind you because obviously everybody is so close, you’ve got to try to outsmart them. “Another good thing to do is put a lap car between them. That’s what I tried to do and just caught the wall the wrong way.” Sweet, who finished third said he hopes to continue to build momentum with his team. He cut a small chuck out of Donny Schatz’s points lead, now sitting 48 points behind the reigning champion in second. Stewart’s win also puts him into Nashville’s history books. He became the second World of Outlaws driver to win on the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway dirt track, constructed on the speedway’s quarter-mile asphalt track with about seven million pounds of dirt put on it. Schatz claimed the first night of the Music City Outlaw Nationals Friday night. There was no bigger stage this weekend than the Music City Outlaw Nationals doubleheader. It birthed a new star of an event that left several fans asking when the Series will return to Nashville. And it rejuvenated Stewart’s season with a guitar shaped trophy and $25,000 pay day. More importantly, just a win. Exactly what he needed. Qualifying fastest with a 16.607-second lap around the newly dirt-clad quarter-mile, Harris went on to win his Heat, score the pole, and lead all 20 laps of the Feature. Kenny Wallace, who has also turned countless laps around the Fairgrounds Speedway asphalt track, drove to victory in the second Heat and started on the outside pole of the Feature before Wade Wenthe was able to race past the former NASCAR star. The two battled throughout the Feature with Wenthe winding up second and Wallace third. “I really didn’t know what was going on behind me, I was just trying to keep the car smooth and straight,” said Harris, of Utica, Ky. “It means so much. I started my career right here in 1997 on the asphalt track so to come down here and get a guitar (trophy) and get a plaque, I just can’t thank everybody who’s helped me get here.” Next up for the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds is the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals, which kicks off on June 12 at Peoria Speedway and runs through July 27 at Fairbury Speedway.
  20. Eight 'Em Up: Sheppard Bags Win #8 of the Season Series debut at Lancaster goes well for Sheppard and the locals No other track the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series has visited so far this year has been able to display the true rocket-like speed of the “Rocket Shepp” Brandon Sheppard quite like Lancaster Motor Speedway did in its Series debut on Saturday night. Sheppard and his blazing speeds around this big half-mile in the Morton Buildings Feature propelled him to his eighth win of the season and 45th overall, granting him sole ownership of third-place on the all-time World of Outlaws Feature wins list. But this win did not come without great pressure from a flock of Carolina favorites behind him. Finishers two-through-six were made up of entrants from either of the Carolinas, and they certainly gave Sheppard a run for his money early on. Ben Watkins (Lancaster, SC) jumped to the early lead, just under two hours after qualifying seventh overall and winning his first career Drydene Heat race. Lap after lap, Watkins pounded the cushion and stayed clear of the pressure that trailed him. Until lap 21… Coming to the start/finish line to complete the 21st circuit, it appeared as though Watkins’ tires had seen enough of the high side, as he shredded a right-rear tire and brought out the caution. “We were married to the top side, and I felt like I had a pretty good car,” he said. “Our tire choice was pretty comparable to everybody else’s. Not sure if we just got into some debris or something.” Just three laps earlier, the same heartbreak struck then-runner-up Brandon Overton, as he also blew a right-rear chasing down Watkins. While Overton was unable to return after his tire expiration, Watkins made repairs and came back for a 14th-place finish. Despite his unfortunate outcome, Watkins was all smiles after the race and was proud of the laps he led and the opportunity he got to race against the Outlaws in front of his very present home-track fan base. “This is my hometown crowd, and they definitely back the hometown boys good here,” Watkins said in high spirits. “I love stepping up and racing with these national [tour] guys, showing how good we can do too.” With the race’s original leader now out of the picture, the lead fell right into the hands of the Rocket1 Racing ride. Sheppard had worked his way around Chris Madden, Johnny Pursley and another South Carolinian, Michael Brown, for the second spot just before Watkins’ tire blew. His efforts in the first 20 laps proved to be all that was necessary to get the locals behind him. However, keeping them back there was another story. It took a lot of mark-hitting to stay smooth, but Sheppard, as he’s done so many times before, drove a great race out front to get the job done once again on a track he was not too familiar with. “It was a lot of fun out there,” Sheppard said. “Track’s really big, it’s a lot different than anything else we’ve ever raced on, for sure. It was definitely cool to do something a little bit different like that, and it’s a lot of fun when your car is that good.” With a few cautions scattered throughout the race, Sheppard was able to keep it in clean air for most of the way. Strategically, he chose to stay away from the top groove, seeing how others had been using up their tires on the high side. “My car was really good and maneuverable around the middle-bottom,” he said. “I went up and ran the top just for a couple laps and I felt like I was wheel-spinning real hard. If I did that too many laps in-a-row, I’d really overheat my right-rear tire.” Clover, SC’s own Ross Bailes made one special effort to claim second on Saturday night, battling with Johnny Pursley for most of the race and then Michael Brown in the final laps to claim the runner-up spot. “Johnny and Michael were racing really hard, it was honestly fun to watch,” Bailes said. “But I knew while they were racing hard that they were using up their tires. So I just stayed right around the bottom and tried to get through there.” After a few cautions, Bailes’ car seemed to be getting faster, as he reeled in Michael Brown inside the final ten laps and, with five to go, made the pass down the backstretch to seal the deal. From that point, Bailes was a man on a mission to try and catch Sheppard, but the deficit was just too large. “Once I got by Michael, I was able to run down Brandon a little bit. But I don’t think I would have gotten by him if the race went any longer,” Bailes said. In the end, Bailes and the rest of the Barry Wright Race Cars house team bagged yet another podium finish in their first year of partnership. This certainly looks good on them right now, with plans to head to the Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora Speedway next weekend, and Bailes would certainly love to have a good showing in what will be his debut at “The Big E.” “This just shows how good their car is,” Bailes said. “We’ve been several places this year and won on hooked-up, slick, everything. I think we’ve got a really good piece and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.” At the beginning of the week, “Downtown” Michael Brown said he wanted nothing more than to finish well against the Outlaws in front of his hometown crowd. And with his solid third-place finish on Satuday night, he certainly did just that. “We’re tickled pink,” Brown said with a big smile on his face. “I’m thankful for my crew and the opportunity to drive for [car owner] Billy Hicks. This means a lot for us to have a good showing with the World of Outlaws. All the local guys were pretty stout tonight. That means a lot, not only to me, but to all the locals.” Bailes said he didn’t think that if the race went any longer, he would have caught and passed Sheppard. With around ten laps remaining, Brown was supposed to be the man to try and do that, but a going-soft right-rear tire prevented his advances. When the #79 crew removed it from the hub to get tire samples after the race, it was completely flat. “I noticed with about 10 or 11 laps to go that I started wheelie-ing a little bit getting into turns one and two and into three,” Brown said. “I knew something wasn’t right, and with about five laps to go, it started vibrating really bad. That’s when I knew I had a tire going down. I just thank the lord that we made it to the end and got a good finish.” The Outlaws get next weekend off from Series competition, but most will make the trip into Rossburg, OH for the 25th running of the Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora Speedway. Keep it locked to the World of Outlaws and DIRTcar Racing Twitter/Facebook channels on June 6-8 for all of the updates from the weekend’s events!
