Midget 85
Tommy, In answer to you question above, Larry's modified started out as a 1938 Chevy sedan. It actually had a roof on it then. As mentioned before as with Ronnie Chumley's modified the roof skins were removed by the time 69 season ended.
nightmoves 99
I have a question... is that large line tie wrapped to the rear hoop of the cage a fuel line that just might have held ..maybe 2-3 gallons of fuel?
Midget 85
Good question that only Charlie or Larry might be able to answer.. However, I would think that would cause a little discomfort if the line was to rupture and I would hate to know I was strapped inside a modified with a ruptured fuel line
tommyo
Here's Larry Schild, Part Three: 5 photos of Larry being presented with the trophy for winning the 2nd Annual Permatex 200, July 29, 1972 Here's Larry again with his wife and daughter... 3 more photos of Larry's trophy presentation, including one with grand-dad Charles Ray... These 3 photos were taken earlier in the evening (It's still daylight), and Larry is getting another trophy. I don't remember what this earlier presentation is about - I don't have these photos labeled with anything other than the date. However, I do have 2 photos of LMS driver Earl Hughes with is car being presentated with a trophy at the same time - if anyone can remember what that was about, please help! OK, next up is Jerry Schild - first in his hobby season (I've posted NO Hobby photos as yet,) then in 1972, in his first LMS season - Sorry, I have no photos of ANYONE after that! I still have a couple of "on request" people to post yet, and still have hundreds of other photos which I will begin posting randomly after I finish the on request stuff - if anyone else has any other particular drivers they want posted, please me know!! tommyo
OK, next up, on request, Jerry Schild - all these photos are from 1971, Jerry's first year (Hobby season)... Jerry's nice-looking '55 Chevy owned by Charles Ray, and sponsored by Rush Johnson - Behind #7 is the #9 Hobby car of Glenn Jones Jerry's #7 again, with the #75 LMS of Vaughn Brune at the rear of the car - Jerry's car was nice looking because its paint-scheme was so simple One of Jerry's wins, undated Jerry and Rush Jerry's 1st Hobby feature win, June 26, 1971 A very young Jerry... RETrott
I'd have to say that those guys seem to take their "Hobby" somewhat seriously. That would be NASCAR Limited Sportsman Stock Cars. Quite like a Late Model Sportsman, just a little less horsepower. But, still pretty quick.
tommyo
OK guys and gals - I'm off work tomorrow and the weather is supposed to SUCK (again) so I plan to spend the day scanning photos and making several new posts - be prepared!! RETrott
Worth mentioning is the pictured Jerry Schild, in '71 with the car he began racing in, the #7 Car NASCAR Limited Sportsman Stock Car, crew chiefed by Charlie Schild, and owned by Rush Johnson. I believe Jerry is age 17 in that picture. The following year, '72, the team moved up to Late Model Sportsman, and the next year, '73, battled for the LMS Track Championship, and barely missed winning, against Ronnie Chumley in the Vita Fresh car. In '74, the Rush Johnson Associates team constructed a '72 Chevy Monte Carlo, with a Banjo Matthews chassis, and raced in 5 NASCAR Winston/Sprint Cup races, with a best finish of 8th in the Southern 500 at Darlington, SC. Not bad for a rookie driver, owner, and crew chief, in NASCAR's top series.
tommyo
Posting at 3:28 in the morning? Don't you sleep!? Interesting info - I never really knew what happened to any of the old Meyer guys after I left. When I left there, I really left it all behind. I had seen a Rush Johnson/Jerry Schild Cup car posted somewhere, but I never really knew what it was all about! While I burned-out and left it all behind back then, I really miss it now! More Jerry Schild and other drivers/cars coming up today!
tommyo
Here's Jerry Schild's 1972 LMS season photos from Meyer... Jerry ontrack, 1972 Jerry with the Rush Johnson owned and sponsored '65 Chevelle - just a guess perhaps: is the Larrys car from 1971? Jerry in the car after some emergency repairs were made, April 29, 1972 ...a nice shot of Jerry in the car... Jerry with Rush, Charles Ray and the rest of the crew... Jerry's car sitting on the crazy-8 track - another nice-looking, simple paint scheme Jerry ontrack between turns 1 and 2... Jerry with a win, April 15, 1972 - again, don't know if this is a heat race or perhaps a feature win...it is later in the evening however!! tommyo
Ok, on request, Mike Crawford - all I could find was these several pictures from 1972 - nothing from 1971 or earlier. Perhaps he was there from 1972 onwards. I still haven't found my pictures from 1973 at all, but I know they're here somewhere - Here's Mike... Mike sitting on pit road, ready to go Mike up against the wall, April 8, 1972 One of Mikes wrecks, dated in my book as June 22, 1972 - on the right is Robbie Davidson, who was at that time the track welder. Robbie owns Davidson Communications in Pasadena - Back in the day, when NASCAR Winston Cup crews first began using two-way communications, Davidson Communications was one of the main suppliers to them... More photos of the same wreck - looks like they're trying to make repairs on pit road... 4 Pics of Mike ontrack - the solid blue paint-scheme was early-on in the season, the blue and white later in the season...Note that Mike has both a '67 and a '68 Chevelle!! and Mike gets a win!! tommyo
OK guys, my on request stuff is done - sorry I couldn't find anything for Greg Davidson (whom I don't remember) or Hubert Bean (at least the name's familiar) - I'll keep looking thou: Next up, the Vita Fresh Gang - Gordon Van Liew and his Vita Fresh team was a really big deal at Meyer - at least Ronnie was - I don't remember Tony doing much of anything but having a lot of wrecks - He apparently did not inherit the driving ability his dad or brother had, although it was nice to have a "name" at Meyer, even as a rookie. RIP Tony Jr. Ronnie was the LMS Track Champion for 1971. I have a lot of pictures of these guys over the 1970, 1971 and 1972 seasons, so I'll split this post into 3 sections - Here's Number One, from 1970! (Some Photos Previously Posted) Tony Bettenhausen Jr sitting on pit road in the #99 Vita Fresh '57 Chevy Ronnie's #98 Vita Fresh '66 Chevelle, without Ronnie Ronnie Chumley ontrack in the #98 Vita Fresh '66 Chevelle Ronnie had a bad day, undated... Tony ontrack in the #99 Vita Fresh "57 Chevrolet Ronnie ontrack in a different car, a '67 Chevelle Joe Plowman in a #48 Vita Fresh '67 Chevelle - the same car perhaps? Tony's bad day, August 1, 1970 Another bad day for Tony, September 5, 1970 More to follow...
tommyo
A quick observation on the photos I posted earlier - I noticed that the LMS cars from 1970 DID NOT have the window screens in place, and those from 1971 have them in place on about half the cars - But by 1972, all the LMS cars had them - I guess 1971 was an optional year, and I realize I'm probably just restating the obvious! byron
I need to add some replys to this tread before it gets away. On post no.120 the #4 of Woosley, I really can't tell what color the car is in this picture but it started out in 1965 painted red and sometime during the middle of the season it was painted a bright orange with white numbers, lettering and wheels. They had applied tire black and the car was a real show car, to me one of the all time best looking modifieds to ever run at Meyer. I think it may have also had a white expanded metal grill. On post 143 the #41 sprinter is a Jim McElreath built car and is probably one of his son Jame's first cars, he was usually no.14. The Jimmy Finger photos, he ran the #111 (usually 11) at Meyer quite a bit. He was from the Austin/San Antonio area. When Austin/S.A. dropped the supers he made quite a few trips to Meyer with a late model. Thats Gordon Wooley behind the tail in drivers suit. The #19 sprinter you can see Dallas Texas on the side panel, I'm not sure of the owner but it would soon be driven by a very young Bobby Marshall of Dallas. The dark colored (brown)#11 Chevelle is I believe Jack Ingram, he made at least one apperance for one of the Permatex races. The red #3, 60 Ford Starliner is Joe Auippa form around 1969. That car was another beauty. The #5 super of Leroy Halfen, I had forgoten he had driven it, I remember it mostly being driven by his brother Billy Wayne. Billy won a much disputed race in Jackson Miss. The car ended up with former Nascar Grand National Driver Bob Derrington. On Larry Schild's #1 sedan Modified it looks like it has a Ford Boss engine from the shape of the valve covers. This car was last raced by a driver from Pasadena Tx. named Dennis Goforth, It was now powered by a big block Chevy with a 4 barrel carb. There was a several year gap from the last time Schild drove it to when Goforth drove in some of the last super shows at Meyer. thanks Byron
tommyo
Thanks Byron for the additional insight - any memories from that time are nice to be shared, especially when we're all of bunch of fogies now, with foggy memories at best! tommyo
OK the Vita-Fresh gang, Part II - all these photos from 1971 Ronnie Chumley ontrack 2 times Ronnie and his Championship-Winning '57 Chevrolet LMS #6 Two photos of a Bad Day for Ronnie, July, 10, 1971 Tony Bettenhausen Jr with his Gordon Van Liew-owned Vita Fresh #69 '66 Chevelle Tony in his #69 Chevelle, on pit row waiting to go qualify for the nights events Tony ontrack Tonys #69 Chevelle on the crazy-8 track Several photos of Ronnie and his crew, Ed Hamblin, car owner Gordon Van Liew, and track officials after winning the first annual Permatex 200, July 31, 1971 The trophy girl is Linda Stewart, and I suspect the guy in the suit is probably a Permatex official (?) tommyo
Up Next, the Vita Fresh Gang, Part III - All Photos from 1972 Ronnie on track in the #1 Vita Fresh '68 Chevelle - Previously Posted Tony next to his #03 Vita Fresh '66 Chevelle Ronnie in the car, ready to go, with the window-net down April 29, 1972, a bad day for Tony - on the trailer, awaiting repairs Another shot of Ronnie ontrack... I'm not positive, so correct me if you know, but I believe Tony drove this #3 '65 Chevelle on the evening of June 24, when Bobby Allison and many other out-of-state cars came to Meyer - I don't remember ever seeing Tony in this car again Ronnie's car on pit road - I included this photo because his car had a unique paint-scheme (I don't recall if Tony's car had it) - The car was orange on the right side, with Vita Fresh Orange Juice Sponsorship, and a redish-pink of the left side, with Vita Fresh Grapefruit Sponsorship - most of the photos of Ronnie's car are of the left, or Grapefruit side... Ronnie receiving the trophy for his 1971 LMS championship run at Meyer Speedway - opening night, April 1, 1972 Ronnie with Gordon and flagman John Corbett at the trophy presentation Tony getting the trophy for his 3rd place finish in the 1971 LMS season, April 1, 1972 Ronnie with a undated win, and ontrack... A bad night for Ronnie - undated, but near the end of the season - if anyone actually REMEMBERS this accident, please share your wisdom!
