Meyer Speedway Pics 2

Is it just the pic, or does that chevelle have a HUGE amount of tire stagger/offest in it?

Which Chevelle? If I remember correctly, the #5 Car (aka Tank) was a '64 Chevelle Malibu body mounted on a '57 Chevrolet Belaire Convertible frame/suspension, with a 3/4 ton truck rearend/axle, and 3/4 ton truck rear hubs mounted on both front spindles. Powered by a big block motor that ran fairly well until it was rebuilt by a certain builder. But, rumor has it, a certain big block Super Modified started running a lot better about that time. Probably just a coincidence...

This Topic appears to be missing a post or two. Must have been Editorred out. Regarding Post #1, top picture, I still don't recall the driver of the #52 Ford ('49-'52), but the #27 Buick may have been driven by Willard White. I had previously thought it was possibly driven by Doyle Wilbanks, but stand corrected. The picture is from late '62 or early '63, turn one/two MeyerSpdwy, "Bronco" Stock Cars.

Hey Larry,

I've been going through some old posts. A driver/owner that came to mind is Len Coursey (sp). What ever became of him. I believe he drove an orange 55 chevy numbered 53 (might have been a Billy Wade fan). These things pop into my alleged mind from time to time.......................................... :D:D:D

I recall a brief phone converstation from the early/mid 90s, when Len was checking on a possible R/M Concrete delivery. He was doing something near Hobby Airport, but I don't recall details. I saw him, in '99 I believe, at the track at Kyle. But, he was working on a Late Model and appeared busy so I didn't make any contact. I'm thinking the car he was working on then was driven by his son, James Corsey. And yes, his Bronco Stock Car from the mid 60s was # 53. Good guy, good racer.

Thats POP MINOR on the left receiving the trophy.

Thats my Grandad George "Curley" Tennison Sr. on the right. He was Chief Steward at meyer back then.

Curley had a great sense of humor. We had a rain storm one night during the race. So the red flag was out and races cancelled for the night. Curley had came down from the starters stand and was walking on the track toward the pit gate. I came by him as I was one of the last cars on the track. I stopped and asked him if he needed a ride. He said "Hell no you crazy SOB, I wouldn't ride to the pit gate with you". And let out a hearty laugh and slapped my car on the roof.

Had to love Curley......................................... :D:D

If I remember correctly, driver side window nets became a rule for the '71 NASCAR season. Possibly after Richard Petty's Darlington crash.

I will back Larry up on this. I remember them Petty crash vividly. Richard broke his collar bone when his arm flew out of the window. I thought it was going to be much worse.

Here's three more of Mack's Modified photos from the early 1960s that I already had scanned into the computer.

Here's a 1962 photo of the 1962 Modified Champion, M.J. Burton in his #5, Red 1938 Chevy Coupe

Next is a 1964 photo of 1963 Modified Champion, Bill Blumrick in the Fred Furlow #7, Black and White 1938 Chevy Coupe - note the reversed

color-scheme from the previous year.

Last is a 1966 photo of 1967 Modified Champion, George Nash - don't remember who owned the car, and was it red and white

or blue and white? A little help here please...

Well, I for one truly enjoy the pics and the stories that go with them. Absolutely priceless stuff.

Most of the folks who visit this section just enjoy the pics without saying much. This particular thread with your pics has had over 5,000 views. That's 5000 folks who have looked, but not posted a thank you.

OK guys, I've been posting lots of photos, but hardly anyone has requested anything special! Come on and get involved or I'm just going back into the woodwork again and take my photos with me!!

How about some Billy Griswold and Johnny Reif pics?

Thanks,

Jim
