  1. Mark, We definately want you on the CYA program over there. Get on back to Texas ASAP!!!!! Jim
  2. Larry, I don't know what that car is either. Maybe Barb can show it to her dad and shed some light on it. I think you're right about 61 Meyer. Looks like one of the transition cars built for Meyer after they left Playland. Mr. Meyer didn't want the Playland cars running at his track. He told me that one day when I saw him at the track. He didn't think they were built well enough for the 1/2 mile banked asphalt. I couldn't and wouldn't argue the point. He knew a lot more about race cars than I did...................................
  3. Plus one one that mark. I talked to Mack a few times and told him, he was scaring the hell outta me. Those cars would get out of control and slide his way, with Mack still clickin'. Mack was as large a part of Meyer Speedway and Playland as car owners, drivers and fans...............................
  4. I think that Charlie raced stock cars at Playland. Seems like he had a 39 or 40 Ford coupe with a Flathead. Been a loooonnng time.......................................
  5. His car was red with white 00 on it. He probably wasn't there long enough for you to know him. A really nice guy that liked racing. He was also one hell of a mechanic.
  6. Yep, Monty was friends with us at the "junk yard". I ended up with Monte's Bronco as a back up car. I think he spent one season building the car and after a few races decided "What's a nice guy like me doing here on Saturday nights". I had an early 55 Chevy pickup he wanted, so we traded race car for truck. Glad to hear he is doing well.
  7. We were there. It turned out to be a real pi$$in' contest. It went on for about 3 or 4 laps. Each one was waiting for the other to let off. They kept going in deeper and deeper. They wound up in the parking lot on S. Main side. I think some bars had to be cut or forced out to get Ronnie out. Not sure about M.J. Both of those guys were hard chargers. They were fan favorites.
  8. Thanks, I didn't recognize Jack. The wreck I'm talking about took both cars over the fence going into three. What a mess.......................
  9. Is this a pic of Ronnies car when he and MJ went over the fence together?
  10. Great story and a great choice by your Dad! Yes I am aware of the prices in the 60s. I looked at the Boss 302s and 29s. To much for me. I now have this mental picture of your Dad in 1969 at the Ford dealer, spying a Mach I that is the right color, then looking inside to see the Top Loader. SOLD!!! Sounds like me..............................................
  11. Wow!! What a great car. And one owner!! O.K., I can't leave this alone. Did it come with the Magnum 500s? Have you added or taken anything away from the car? Did you consider buying a Boss car at the time? More later.....................................
  12. After revisiting this thread, I have concluded that this is indeed the 2 car. After further review, I believe that is Mr. White's trailer. The tire rack is gone but it looks to be Bill's trailer. Thought y'all should know this.
  13. Well, all in all, a very disappointing trip out there. They, whoever they might be, have put up a 4 strand barb wire fence all around the property. I didn't see any gates so I guess the dirt yard is gone. One old building is there, which I think is Ed's old office and pay out window. I was tempted to cross the fence and look around but then I would be guilty of trespass. That property may still be tied up in litigation as I saw no realty signs on it. The old Safeway center across Hillcroft is still vacant. I would still like to get in there to look around but I guess you would have to know somebody. Abandoned race tracks are very sad.....................................
  14. Yeah, I haven't been out there in a long time. Just wanna look around......................... Maybe I like your idea about restoring the old track! What a project!!!
  15. I may run out there in the morning and check it out..............................
  16. I caught a part of a news story the other night. They were showing a grass fire at Hillcroft and South Main. Looked like the Meyer property. Anyone else see that?
  17. I know what you mean. I drove some competition Karts. Makes a row of telephone poles look like a picket fence...................
  18. Looks like that little engine had some serious hard core parts.
  19. Just keeps gettin' better................................
  20. Awesome collection! I feel privileged to see the pics.
  21. Thanks, I know a lot more now than before. And you are correct, there is no substitute for experience. Jim
  22. Randy, did any of these little cars have tags or some manufacturers identification on the frame or chassis? I was just thinking if you found one at a swap meet or estate sale ect. if there would be any way to I.D. it.
  23. Thanks Randy, As always, on top of things.
