  1. The industrialization of the USA----------->mass production of automobiles--------------->lots of old horse racing tracks around ----------->a few adventurous souls ................... but all that is very general, not specific just to the Texas region.
  2. WOW!, ................. This thread alone has over 100,000 hits on it. That is amazing.
  3. I still remember, and always will ...................... some of the best racing I've EVER seen .................... was the night several years ago when J.C and Brandon put on a great racing exhibition for the lead for about 10 laps, after a restart in a super-late race. THAT was some thrilling racing to witness!
  4. Nor do I Rocketdog! But, what a fun thread this is! Cool stuff.
  5. 79W, If you can find or figure out how to get hold of Jimmy Finger he might be able to help you. On the web there is this site ........ go to www.motorsportmemorial.org at the bottom of the page in the box, type in "wusterhausen" and click "submit".
  6. Jakdad, Good eye on the "Marauder" fender badges. I can't explain the timing difference, but they sure look like the same as those on a '64 Mercury Marauder.
  7. Thanks Rodlea. Found it. Those are some great old pics in that collection of old mod's and Supers. Thanks Tom. There are also some good pics of the #106 car also. Click on Txtom's link down at his signature for Racing Pics.
  8. You bet, Junior. I remember that track. Seems like it only ran a year or two. It was out in that big field by T.N. Porter, Jr. High School. I went to school there 7th through 9th grades. (I can't believe they changed the name of it and named it after that idiot ........... err .............. I mean nice lady.) At the time the school wasn't built yet. That was off the intersection of Fredericksburg Road and Alred Lane (long before there was a Ben White Blvd). The Brodies owned that big ol' red brick house that sat up on the hill over-looking the Barton Creek valley, where Toys-R-Us now sits. Great memories.
  9. WoW! Just looking at those two photos. Amazing how you two have hardly changed at bit!
  10. I'd like to know that too Papa. This was way back before I could remember it, but my dad told me Don had once won a feature out at the old Oak Hill Downs Track in Dad's old modified.
  11. Papa, That's a damn good question I don't know the answer to to this very day. All I really know about is what happened at Speed-o-rama. Along about '65 or so, they quit the supers and started running the supposedly "more popular" stock cars of the day. The result? They instantly cut their full house crowds down by about 40%. Then over the years crowds dwindled even further along with dwindling stock car counts. I asked the question any number of times but never got a straight answer. It just never made sense to me.
  12. Don't worry, we'll get Chrissie's pics cleaned up. Thanks for posting!
  13. Retrott, It looks like the cage has brackets for a wing, but I simply don't know the answer regarding the question on the particular night this pic was taken. Cutting Edge Racing, I can remember one car in particular that ran no headers at all. The exhaust just exited the side of the heads. It didn't seem to slow the car down any though.
  14. You may have seen this pic on another thread, but I think its appropriate here as well. Its a pic of Waldo Harper of Austin. His grandson handed me this pic at THR a couple of years ago. The back of the pic says Meyer Speedway, 1970.
  15. Being that I was just a kid back in those early 60's days, I only made it to Meyer on a couple of occasions. But on Friday nights at Speed-o-rama in Austin, Houston would come to us. Regulars with their super-modifieds in tow would be Billy Wade ('61 and '62), Buddy Rackley, Buddy Evans, Billy Griswold and Jimmy Willis. From San Antonio would come Buddy Jerkins, Johnny Doyle, Don Fowler and Buddy Yantis. Bill out of Temple of course. Out of Abileen/San Angelo would come Niedecken, the Johnsons, Robert Polk, Bubba Cowan and Marvin Fillip. Waldo and Bud Simpson out of Austin, and later Jimmy Finger. MAN, would those guys ever put on a show, every single week. It was awesome. At the time, I just never really realized how awesome those shows were!
  16. Bobby, it sure does. I remember that car very well, just not that exhaust configuration, coming out right beside his ear. Make you wonder if he was deaf in that ear before or after he ran it like that ...........
  17. Does anyone know? Is the 55 by chance the car that Buddy Evans drove?
  18. Thanks for the pics Mark. The Yeller 4 is Clyde Johnson. Tom, thanks for the info on the 9. I'd seen a photo of it at Pan AM but didn't know who was driving it.
  19. Hummmm ........................... Very Interesting! Can it be that the 16 car is the 2nd incarnation of the famous #2 Roadster/Super modified? I've downloaded the pic, resized and enhanced it. I'm also going to post the pic on that other thread. Here it is.............Thanks Chipmunk! ................
  20. RETrott, Check out the thread I just bumped to the top. It should now appear under this one.
  21. ................ 90 wt Brylcreme .................... "a little dab 'll do ya."
  22. Not sure Josh. Was in the pits at the time and we walked over to the fence and watched them.
