rebelracewriter
Jones back on top in Upper Iowa Speedway thriller DECORAH, Iowa (May 13) -- Saturday night at the Upper Iowa Speedway, Dan Jones picked up one of the most exciting Holley USRA Stock Car feature races in recent memory during the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series program presented by Kirchner Collision. Jones started on the pole with Dillon Anderson to his outside, and for the entire main event distance the two never moved from those spots. For the last half of the race, the top five raced door to door and bumper to bumper without incident, but in the end it was Jones edging out Anderson at the finish line to score an emotional and popular win taht was a long time coming. Jones, from Waterville, Iowa, lost the use of his legs after he broke his back in a logging accident in 2012. "I cut a tree down. I was topping it, cutting the branches off it and a tree fell from behind me and hit me. One that I hadn't been cutting on or anything. The root system was bad on it, and I was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Jones said. Undaunted, Jones returned to the track the follwing season in a modified stock car equipped with a hand controls including a collapsible steering wheel. Saturday's thrilling triumph was his first feature win since the accident nearly five years ago. "He's a fierce competitor. Always has been," said Upper Iowa Speedway promoter Chuck Ihde. Pete Solum finished third behind Jones and Anderson with defending Holley USRA Stock Car national champion Mitch Hovden in fourth and last year's Iron Man Challenge champ, Kyle Falck rounding out the top five. In other action, Decorah's Dan Hovden held off Kyle Anderson for the victory in the Out-Pace USRA B-Mods and Scott Spilde bested Brady Link in the USRA Hobby Stock main event. Dom Mueller went for a wild ride Saturday during the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature. Racing continues at the Upper Iowa Speedway next Saturday, May 20, with another round of the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series sponsored by CARQUEST of Waukon. The program will feature Holley USRA Stock Cars, Out-Pace USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks, plus Hornets, 600 Mod-Lites and a special appearance by the USRA Late Models.
