  2. Summit Racing Equipment USRA Frost Busters set for April 5-7 WICHITA, Kan. (March 25)—Don’t be an April’s fool. Get out and see something cool when the Summit USRA Frost Busters heat up three exciting dirt ovals in Kansas and Missouri on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 5-7. A trio of events are on tap for featuring USRA Modifieds, Holley USRA Stock Cars presented by Medieval Chassis and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods, beginning at the 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kan., on Thursday, April 5 with the first heat race slated for 7:30 p.m. Built in 1954 on the outskirts of Wichita, the facility opened as Robbins Speedway and operated on Sunday nights for four years before it was sold to Wichita businessman O.L. Douglas in 1958, who changed the name to its present 81 Speedway. Five years later, the track was sold to Bill Hall of Newton, and in 1971 he turned the daily operations over to his son, Charles (known to most as C. Ray Hall). The 2018 season will be his 47th year as the head man in charge of daily operations. The 81 Speedway is located north of Wichita on I-135 to exit 16, then 0.7 mile west on 77th St. (7700 N. Broadway, Park City, KS 67219). For more information call 316-755-1781 or visit www.race81speedway.com online. Friday, April 6, takes the tour to the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. The pit gate opens at 4:30 p.m., grandstands open at 5, hot laps begin at 6:45 and racing starts at 7:30 p.m. The track originally opened in 1955 at 92nd and Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, but three deaths during the 1956 racing season forced its closure. Five years later, Lakeside Speedway opened under new management in 1961 and continued at the Leavenworth Road location through 1988 when developers for The Woodlands dog and horse racing track purchased the property. Lakeside Speedway then moved to its present location at 5615 Wolcott Drive in Kansas City, Kan. The move enabled not only construction of modern grandstands, suites and a press box, but also provided room for an adjacent campground for racing fans. From 1989 to 1999, the facility operated as a half-mile asphalt track. In 2000, Lakeside Speedway was again under new management and the racing surface was converted to a semi-banked 3/8-mile dirt track, which continues to be the configuration today. Don and Donna Marrs purchased the facility from Marc Olson in 2012, and will operate the famed facility again in 2018 for the sixth consecutive season with Pete Howey managing the day-to-day operations. The Lakeside Speedway is located 1.0 mile west of I-435 (exit 18) on SR 5 (5615 Wolcott Dr., Kansas City, KS 66109). For more information, call (913) 299-9206 or visitwww.lakesidespeedway.net online. The tripleheader weekend will wrap up on Saturday, April 7, at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo. The pit gate opens at 4:30 p.m., grandstands open at 5, hot laps begin at 6:30 and the green flag waves at 7 p.m. Owned by Mike and Kyle Johnson, the I-35 Speedway was built in 1994 and purchased by the Johnsons in late 2007. With 24 degrees of banking in the corners, the track hosts weekly racing events from March through October, including USRA Modifieds, Holley USRA Stock Cars, Out-Pace USRA B-Mods and more. Camping is available in the overnight park area, and concessions are located throughout the facility and includes a funnel cake room, beer shack and the full-service Trackside Bar & Grill, where you can enjoy a delicious meal overlooking turns one and two of the racetrack. The I-35 Speedway is a semi-banked 3/8-mile dirt oval located 10 miles north of Cameron on SR 6 at exit 64 (13141 SR 6, Winston, MO 64689). For more information, call 660-749-5317 or check them out at www.i-35speedway.net online. Each show will pay $1,500 to win and $150 to start for Modifieds. Stock Cars and B-Mods will battle for $1,000 to win and $125 to start all three nights. There will be a complete show each night with competitors in all three classes drawing for heat race starting spots. Feature lineups will be determined by heat race passing points with the top eight redrawing for first four rows of the main event each night. Modified nightly payout: 1. $1500, 2. $1000, 3. $700, 4. $600, 5. $500, 6. $400, 7. $300, 8. $250, 9. $225, 10. $200, 11. $190, 12. $180, 13. $170, 14. $165, 15. $160, 16. $155, $150 to start, $100 tow. 6. USRA to sanction Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Mods at Lakeside Speedway again in 2018 KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Dec. 20)--Officials at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., have announce that they are continuing their partnership with the United States Racing Association for the 2018 season. Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series divisions competing at the historic 4/10-mile clay oval include USRA Modifieds, Holley USRA Stock Cars and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods. The track's Grand National, Factory Stock and E-Mod divisions will follow Lakeside Speedway track rules. All classes will see a significant increase in the points fund that will be paid out in all divisions and total more than $20,000. Including points funds from the USRA, the track will dole out a points fund of $6,075 for USRA Modifieds, $3,225 for Holley USRA Stock Cars and $5,025 for Out-Pace USRA B-Mods. The amount of the points fund for each class is the minimum guaranteed amount, and equates to an increase of more than 50% over the total payout for the 2017 racing season. Drivers must compete in at least 75% of Lakeside Speedway weekly points races to be eligible for the increase. "We feel our decision provides our drivers a great points fund, while offering them the competitive edge that USRA has to offer," said Lakeside Speedway promoter Pete Howey. "We would like to thank all of ours drivers for a great 2017 season. We would also like to thank our fans and sponsors and looking forward to a great 2018 season." The Lakeside Speedway is located 1.0 mile west of I-435 (exit 18) on SR 5 (northwest of Kansas City). For more information, call (913) 299-9206 or visit lakesidespeedway.net. 7. Ninety-five champions emerge from Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series in 2017 WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (November 10)--After nearly 700 nights of racing from January through October at 50 of America's most popular dirt ovals, officials at the United States Racing Association have announced 95 champions for 2017 in the Summit Racing Equipment USRA Weekly Racing Series. Among them are seven national champions, 13 regional champions, five special series champions and 70 track champions from 20 different states. In the national points races, four drivers are first-time USRA national champions, two others earned their second titles in their class and one is now a four-time national champ in his division. Jason Cummins of New Richland, Minn., started the season strong and never slowed down on his way to winning his second USRA Modified national championship since winning his first in 2010. While earning track championships at both the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., and Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., Cummins rolled into victory lane 20 times in his 44 starts. Cummins held off a late-season charge by C.A. Nix of Lawton, Okla., who had a strong season at his hometown track and the Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, as well as the Touring Outlaw Modified Series (TOMS). Lake Ozark Speedway (Ozark, Mo.) track champion Ryan Middaugh of Fulton, Mo., broke a tie with Dustin Sorensen of Rochester, Minn., by winning 14 features to Sorensen's six, and Trevor Latham finished fifth in national points while claiming the track title at the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla. Final USRA Modified national points: 1. 71 Jason Cummins, New Richland, Minn. ... 4417 2. 34N C.A. Jason Cummins is the 2017 USRA Modified national champion. Mitch Hovden looked to be well on his way to taking a fifth trophy back to Decorah, Iowa, in the Holley USRA Stock Car division, but a dominating season and strong finish at the Summit Racing Equipment USRA Nationals put Elijah ZeVenBergen of Ocheyeden, Iowa, over the top in the final two weeks of competition. ZeVenBergen was nearly unstoppable in 2017, winning 18 main events in just 23 starts. He competed in just seven Iron Man Challenge events but won five of them, and was the track champion at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa. While Hovden held on for runner-up honors in the national standings, it was the first time since the 2010 season that he did not wind up with a national championship or Iron Man Challenge title. He did, however, claim the track championship at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah. 2013 Holley USRA Stock Car national champion Donavon Flores of Las Cruces, N.M., finished third in the final points battle while Brett Heeter of Kansas City, Kan., capped off another stellar season with another track championship at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., and a fourth-place finish in national points. Jaime Torres of Las Cruces, N.M., came home in fifth place. Elijah Zevenbergen is the 2017 Holley USRA Stock Car national champion. Twenty-nine feature wins last year was not enough for Ryan Gillmore to win the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod national championship, but 29 wins again in 2017 did the trick for the 24-year-old from Springfield, Mo. He also repeated as track champion at both the Monett Motor Speedway in Monett, Mo., and Springfield Raceway. Lucas Oil Speedway (Wheatland, Mo.) track champion Andy Bryant of Fort Scott, Kan., who earned the title in 2015, finished second in the final standings after a tight three-way battle in the standings between himself, Gillmore and third-place finisher Dan Hovden of Decorah, Iowa, who joined his brother Mitch as a track champ at the Upper Iowa Speedway. Jake Richards used a victory on Friday night at the Summit Racing Equipment USRA Nationals to garner a fourth-place finish while Kris Jackson of Lebanon, Mo., rounded out the top five. Ryan Gillmore is the 2017 Out-Pace USRA B-Mod national champion. In 2015, Dustin Gulbrandson of Sioux Falls, S.D., became the first driver to win a second USRA Hobby Stock national championship, and he hasn't budged from there since. Gulbrandson's seven wins and 29 top-five finishes in 36 starts propelled him to a fourth straight title in 2017 to become the first driver to perform the feat four straight seasons. Mason City Motor Speedway track champion Matt White of Nashua, Iowa, made a late-season run and picked up a win at the Summit Racing Equipment USRA Nationals, but had to settle for second-place in the final standings ahead of Waukon, Iowa's Brady Link; Chad Lonneman of Adrian, Minn.; and Steve Larson of Decorah, Iowa, won claimed the USRA Hobby Stock track championship at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa. 10. USRA Iron Man Challenge an all-Hovden affair at Fayette County Speedway WEST UNION, Iowa (Sept. 1)--At the conclusion of two USRA Iron Man Challenge main events Friday night at the Fayette County Speedway, two Hovden brothers from Decorah, Iowa, stood tall in victory lane. In the Holley USRA Stock Car 20-lapper, four-time national champ Mitch Hovden came out on top in an electrifying battle that saw the top three finishers race fender-to-fender, virtually three-wide the entire distance. Six lead changes occurred between Hovden and early leader Dillon Anderson, but it was Hovden who got to the finish line first-about two-one-hundredths of a second sooner than Dan Jones, who inched ahead of Anderson at the white flag and nearly beat Hovden to the line. Meanwhile, 12th-starting Derek Green had the best seat in the house en route to a fourth-place finish while Lynn Panos was the fifth driver to see the checkered flag. Mitch Hovden won the Holley USRA Stock Car feature. Dan Hovden, who is embroiled in a tight battle near the top of the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod national points, passed Ben Moudry on lap 6 and led the final 14 laps on his way to a fifth Iron Man Challenge victory this season. Polesitter Josh Roney finished second, Kyle Anderson was third, Moudry held on for fourth and current national points leader Andy Bryant rounded out the top five. Dan Hovden won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature.
