I saw this on another forum:

7:30am CT Monday: Travis Rilat and Tyson Perez are both in ICU at a Seattle hospital that specializes in burn victims this morning after an incident with a fuel drum last night. They are both being watched over very carefully by nurses, doctors, crew, friends, and soon family as they are en route on a plane. Their condition is very severe, but we are staying positive and know that they are both strong individuals that will keep fighting through this. I will post an update when we can get good information from that area. Please keep them in your thoughts today, and lets hope they will pull through. Thanks.

8:30am CT Monday - Just got word from Maryanna that Travis was able to wiggle his toes and give a thumbs up to the nurse. He is also responding very well to the respirator now as well. I still dont have any news on Tyson yet, but will let everyone know as soon as possible

This is from Travis's facebook page.racingfan1982

Lord, we don't have a clue why these tragedies happen, but we know we can trust You to make this situation work for good for all those involved - even if we don't understand.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Two men were seriously injured Sunday evening in an explosion while trying to “barrel ride” in the parking lot of a shop that builds and services race cars, said Sedro-Woolley Fire Chief Dean Klinger.

The men, from out of the state, had placed about four gallons of methanol in a 55 gallon barrel, sat on top of it, then lit it on fire, Klinger said.

“Apparently it was supposed to slide across the parking lot like a rocket,” Klinger said. “Instead it blew up.”

One of the ends of the barrel flew 120 feet outside of Funk Racing at 631 Sunset Park Drive, Klinger said.

The men were severely burned in the explosion, but were responsive when paramedics and firefighters arrived just before 9 p.m.

The fire had already been extinguished.

They were taken to United General Hospital then flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Klinger did not have the ages or identities of the men or their medical conditions.

There is a little more to this story as to why it happened, but it should come out in an official statement soon.

Here's the official ASCS Release that I got.....

Rilat and Crew Member Suffer Severe Burns; Wayne Johnson Recovering from Elma Injuries

TULSA, Okla. (July 19, 2010) – Just as positive reports were spreading of successful surgery for Wayne Johnson following a wild ride in Lucas Oil ASCS National action at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA, on Saturday night, word broke on Sunday evening of a fellow past ASCS National champion and one of his crew members involved in a serious shop accident on Sunday night in Washington.

Travis Rilat, the 2003 ASCS National champion hailing from Forney, TX, and Australian crew member Tyson Perez both suffered severe burns when a methanol barrel exploded on Sunday evening. Rilat and Perez were transported to a Seattle hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Early indications are that both Rilat and Perez will remain in the Harborview burn unit for at least two to three months.

Tom Lorenz of Smiley’s Racing Products has established a fund for Rilat and Perez. Contributions to the Travis Rilat/Tyson Perez fund may be made by calling the First State Bank in Mesquite, TX, at 972-285-6311.

Less than 24 hours earlier, 2000 ASCS National champion Wayne Johnson was transported to the same Harborview Hospital in Seattle after suffering severe leg injuries in a lap two “A” Main crash at Grays Harbor Raceway’s Fourth Annual Fred Brownfield Memorial.

Johnson, a native of Oklahoma City, OK, currently residing in Knoxville, IA, underwent what was deemed a successful surgery early Sunday and will undergo a second surgery later in the week to finalize cleanup of the wounds. A full recovery is expected for Johnson.

Absolutely right, Reb. As horrible as that sounds, there are survivors who would agree. Please continue to pray for the families of both. If there are mailing addresses for these folks, please let us know. Cards, notes, well wishes all help a little.

Although the acts that led to the tradgedy were the result of poor choices, the loss and futility remain. We may shake our heads and say"I'd never do something like that", but we still have the ability to, perhaps on a "smaller scale". We need to keep our senses about us, make the tough calls, do the right thing as often as possible, even if it's not popular.

In no other domain are consequences more dire than in the realm of safety, at work AND play.

Travis will have more damage than just burns, pray for him every time he pops into your mind.

Prayers sent for Travis' painful recovery and both of their families. RIP Tyson - God bless your soul. Probably were just trying to have fun and didn't have enough respect for fire. It's my worst fear, yet I'm a hot air balloon pilot and race driver. Fire safety is so important in what we do.

Darin Short shares Travis Rilat's primary sponsor, ShopTheBOSS, will be providing a way for folks attending the Cowtown SPRINTacular on August 7th.

The company will be donating $15 to the recovery effort for every adult ticket stub from the event that is turned in at their 3844 Valley View Lane, Irving, Texas, location. The ticket prices for the event are $15, which matches the amount that the company will donate. The store is open normal business hours M-F and Saturday mornings

Those fans turning in their ticket stubs will get to sign a ‘Get Well Travis’ guest book that will be sent to the family during his hospital stay. There is no store purchase necessary.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time for the Rilat family and everyone that knows them," a company representative said. "We’re here in Texas wanting to do something to help them while they are at the hospital in Seattle. I think race fans want to help too, and this is an easy way for them to directly help – and get to see a sprint car race honoring Travis as well.”

The feature event at the Summer SPRINTacular is 29 laps, which is the long-time car number on Travis’ Lucas Oil ASCS Dirt Sprint series car.
