Anyone whining about how nasty the place gets in the rain now shoulda been there the first three years. There was NO gravel on the roads in either campgrounds or parking lots for the first two and then only in the VIP lots in the third. The first year there was major non drainage issues - so mud was not as much of a problem as finding that your camper or car is now a house boat moored in the center of the lake. We got bored and ran a traut line - got 12 lbs of mud pollies in 30 minutes (just kidding). They solved the drainage problem (mostly) and have been gravelling quite well each year - but for those of us that have homes on gravel roads we KNOW it takes time for the gravel to get well pounded into the clay (and re-graveled to repeat), it can take three or four years of constant maint on a new road or driveway before you have a good gravel bed that does not produce clay on the surface! And that's a road that gets driven on every day - not three times a year!

Smith and Gossage have one main goal - its called profit. If they spent the $$ to silence those critics there would be a major DEFICIT in the ops. Might as well just close up and go home. As those griping fans fail to notice every year sees some improvements. To give an example of cost - 100,000 to 4" concrete one parking lot (39 spaces worth) last year. now multiply that by the number of parking spots for the fans and cut the cost in half using asphalt - My rough estimate would be about 12 mil by the time you did all of the drainage work (paving sheds water so to mitigate downstream flash flooding you have to have a way to store and slowly release the runoff) Remember the goal of profit? Just roll that on in to ticket prices - I am sure no one would gripe about paying 500 for the cheap seats. And as it doesn't always rain - is it a smart investment. Those that gripe the loudest should pony up the most right?

Been to Daytona lately? There is only one lot at the track (not counting infield) - its VIP- everyone else parks on the municipal golf course and rides the shuttle two miles. Not a problem arriving as the fans arrive on varying schedule. But the race ends at one specific time. Have you ever seen 250,000 people trying to ride 35 buses? It ain't pretty.

It won't happen overnight - just as building the place took time - but it IS a well managed facility and is maturing nicely.

I still hate that sticky clay - but it's not specific to TMS - it's North and East Texas wide.
