San Antonio Speedway Recap

It was Century 21 night at San Antonio Speedway and if you arrived looking for some "Hot Property", you didn't need to look any further than Donnie Horelka, Justin Oates and Mark Mathais. Each of these drivers won their main events, making victory lane their "home sweet home".

In the Sportsman main event, Vince Trietch started on the pole followed by Tater Mason, Keith Garrett, Tom Reynolds, Tom Casey and Robert Mayberry. The racing was clean and green until a mid-race yellow came out when Dwayne Markgraf lost a wheel in turn 4. At this point, Trietch was leading with Tater Mason and Justin Oates right on his back bumper. On the restart, Tater Mason lost an engine and Justin Oates barely squeaked by. When the green flag came out again, it didn't take very long for the young and impressive Justin Oates to blast past Trietch for the lead. When the checkered flag dropped, it was Justin Oates winning followed by Vince Trietch, Robert Mayberry, Frank Johnson, Tom Reynolds and Tom Casey. Following the race, Frank Johnson was penalized 2 positions, thus putting him in 6th place. Justin Oates celebrated his second win in a row in a cloud of smoke, thanks to some steamy donuts and a burn out.

The Road Runners main event saw an extra high car count when several drivers from I-37 Dirt Track took to the asphalt oval. Both the winner's purse and laps were upped for this event. Greg Rohmer and John Kelly Jr. had the field covered, however, with 8 laps to go and a lap car in the way, Greg Rohmer was tagged and spun out in turn 4. Both he and John Kelly Jr. were sent to the back of the pack, handing the lead over to Mark Mathais. With 5 laps to go, Rohmer was making a charge to the front when he and JR Eichelberger made contact, sending Eichelberger very hard into the turn 4 wall. He was OK, but the same could not be said for his car. Mark Mathais went on to win with John Kelly Jr. finishing second. Charlie Henley, Charlie Earnhardt and Jason Kelly rounded out the top five.

The shiny sleek Late Models hit the track with Mike Balzer on the pole. Wesley McGuffin, James Cole, Danny Garcia and Jesse Salazar started in positions 2 - 5. On Lap #2, McGuffin and Balzer got together. Balzer went for a spin and so did several cars behind him. Balzer, Jeff Wills and Jason Smith hit the pits for repairs, all of them able to return to the racing action. This put James Cole in the top spot with Larry Bendele breathing down his neck. This dicing duo thrilled the racefans, exchanging the lead several times. With 9 laps to go, James Cole bumped leader Larry Bendele coming off turn 2. Bendele was almost able to keep the car under control, but lost it and spun out on the backstretch. Both drivers were sent to the back. Their loss was Donnie Horelka's gain. He took the lead and never relinquished it. Bendele and Cole battled back to finish second and third, respectively. The next contenders to cross the finish line were Jesse Salazar, Jason Smith, Wesley McGuffin, Danny Garcia and Jeff Wills. Mike Balzer and Jeff Smith finished the night in the pits. Congrats to Donnie Horelka on his win.

GoGirl,

You've written an awesome, factual recap of Saturday night's races! I had sent you a private message earlier this week to find out your identity, but I haven't heard back from you. We are planning to use your recap in this week's program at San Antonio Speedway. Unfortunately, since we don't know who you are, we won't be using your real name. We'll be showing that the story was contributed by "GoGirl from Texas Speedzone." We really wanted to give you credit using your real name, but the program has already been submitted for printing.

We would like to have you join us on the program committee to provide regular recaps. Please contact me ASAP via our website or a private message. And if anyone knows the identity of "GoGirl," please let me know so I can track (her) down.

I joked with Steve Jung from Scoring last night that my recaps never got "blessed" by him the first time, but yours passed with flying colors!
