Guest The_Greek
hey Neil, how about posting some old TIDA pics.
Guest The_Greek
Neil, i can really appreciate you going through all that trouble to compile a winners list like that, i gotta say i probably attented most of those races except for those real far ones (odessa, altus, red river) Boy were those the good ole days in late model racing, back when caution laps didnt count, there werent mufflers, and most of all we actually had some drivers who represented CC pretty well... in Rick Rapp, Slick Yeomans and Mike Denman. ive asked for anyone who had any old pics to post a few, so far no luck. good luck next year with the Pro Sedans, and see ya'll at the races. Budman
Jkeys, check your PM's. Up near the top on the "Logged in as: JKeys" line, to the right side it should say "1 new message". Put your cursor on that and double click it. Try checking it again. dy97
i grew up going to twin cities speedway my dad sorta knew jay watson his shop was on andrews highway in midland my dad worked right down the street i remember going to that shop some and checkin out the cars.. i dont think twin cities is open any more but i havent been there since the 90s my favorite part of twin cities was the spectator drags.. they were a huge deal.. i think most of the people went just to watch that.. my dad had a friend named ricky wilson that had a drag car.. 67 or 8 camaro that won alot of the spectator drags.. i remember a big dodge car took him out one night he came back next week with the fender all cut out and big dirt track tire on the right front instead of the front runners.. i think the guy with the bad ass 60s chevy pickup with the 455 and basically lm suspension name was fred riohos or something truck was called slow poke .. another often winner was john overton.. he had a metric cutlas it was tan.. real nice car.. he still has the car and races at desert thunder.. oh the memories Edited October 26, 2010 by dy97
txtom
Twin Cities closed in early 1999. John Foster, a racer and gentleman if there ever was one, could not get anyone to show up. The local car counts had been steadily declining in the 90's, and the fan count with it. We had a legends/truck event in early 1999 that ended up being the last night the track ran. While we had a number of trucks and legends, there was no crowd. The track surface itself still exists. The property is overflow parking for "Big -Tex' trailers which we are all familiar with. If you bing map the area, you can zoom it in real close.

txtom
but that place and penwill (or how ever its spelt)(is it closed too?) were my first racing experiences Someone reopened the Penwell dragstrip, Penwell knights or somehing like that. I know they ran in 2009, not sure about this year. The dirt track, mostly known as I-20 West Raceway, closed in 1995. Most of it's area was converted to parking for the dragstrip. txtom
That night was memorable in a bad way for the tremendous fire at the end of the front straight with Meeks, Denman, Stelzig and Walker. It was Denman's fuel cell that got pierced, but Meeks took the brunt of the fire, and we are lucky and grateful that he lived to race another day. Meeks is a super nice guy to talk to also. That was as big a fire as I think I have ever seen at a track over the years. It was also notable that SAS had a visitor that night; none other than Dave Despain. He was hosting a racing show that I cannot recall the name of, and he was at SAS to do a story on the resurgance of Texas Late Model racing under the leadership of Neil Upchurch. With the various tracks in the state getting spotty attendance in that class, Neil organized the TIDA Late Model series, and it brought the state together for several years of great racing. Despain did show footage of the fire on his show that week.
