spark plugs for 441's

The ar133 and ar13 use a 5/8 socket. The plugs for the 441 use 13/16 socket so I don't think the 133s or 13s will work.

 

 

5/8 or 13/16 doesnt matter, the 13/16 plug is a resister type spark plug, your not listening to the stereo while driving, the resister type plug is made to cut out stereo interference , Use what every plug you like. If you really want some expert advice I would consult with your machine shop or go directly to a profesional engine builder that builds motors for what you need.

the washer between the plug and head on the 13/16 socket type plugs is there to evenly distribute heat throughout the plug, I am no spark plug designer nor a spark plug specialist but I have done my home work on plugs. The 5/8 socket type plugs dont specifically need the washer since the plug is smaller and will heat up evenly due to its size.

 

I have used AR 133 plugs on 461, 462, 441, 882, vortec and iron eagle heads and have no bad feedback on plug failure.

The tool to cut the seats are the same. The washer type has a bigger base - to engage the washer. The taper type use no washer.

 

Both will go in the same hole - as long as the outside relief is adequate for the big plug. Some heads are small base only - I know of none that are large base only.

Cletus, if you want to stick with the AR series plugs, the AR72 or AR73 is the right plug for you. I'd go with the 73. I believe in using the right plug for the right application. Like others have already said, the small head plug will work, but that head is designed for the big, washer-seat plug.

 

You can also use an Autolite 353. The 353 is not a racing style plug but will work very well in the 441 heads.

Well all this plug suggesttions how about why the suggestion for certain plugs I have the Thunder stock 99 with 487x heads and run Auto lite 23 the Thunder stock 66 has 441 and runs the Auto lite 23 we seem to have plenty of power from our Meredith Racing Engine but what plug would better suit our application I dont even run race fuel anymore My Budget got tight so I started using super unleaded to save $ and Felt No loss of power and I know we 99,66 have easily the top few in horse power so I guess what I am getting at yalls post sound like I might be missing somthing what are hot & cold plugs Hell It throws a spark what else is there for me to know I read the stuff that was posted about them but looked like chicken scratch to me Any and all explanation will be appreciated

Hell, sounds to me like i need to explore my options with all the sugestions! I know everybody on this post are pretty much top notch racers so i will for sure try some of these other plugs!! I never intended to say the AR133s were the best, i just said you cant go wrong with them! Im glad this post was started, cause i learned there are other options! Hell who knows i might find a little more "rump" out of my motor! Hansen 99, you got a # for MEREDITH RACING ENGINES? Thanks for info GR31

Bobby, finding the right spark plug for the right application can be a pretty confusing endeavor. The good news is, like others have said in this thread, you can make the "wrong" choice and usually still get by just fine so long as your choice isn't totally off base. Spark plug manufacturers will make several plugs that will all fit the same application. Each of those plugs will have some slight difference, and those differences may or may not make enough HP difference for the racer to even notice.

 

Here's an example - the 487x head you run is designed for the small tapered seat plug - 5/8 hex, .460" reach. You can get a plug with those dimensions that is a resistor plug, one that is a suppressor plug, and one that is a non-resistor plug. You can also get plugs with those dimensions that have different style tips - racing style, projected, or standard are some examples.

 

The AR23 is a suppressor plug with a 5/8 hex and .460 reach. The AR133 is a non-resistor plug with the same dimensions but a standard tip. The AR13 is the same as the 133 but has a projected tip - gets the spark out into the chamber a little bit further.

The 441 head and the 487x heads use different type spark plugs, but the threads are the same (14mm) and the reach is close enough so that you may never notice a performance change - that's why they have worked for you guys in both motors. They will both go in the hole and tighten up just fine and produce a spark.

 

I'd use the AR73 for the 441 and the AR133 or AR13 in the 487X.

 

Sorry for the long post, but spark plugs are complicated. LOL
