rebelracewriter
Texas Asphalt Modified Series @ Thunder Hill Raceway 6-21-03 By J M Hallas Win Streak Continues for the Iceman 22 cars were on hand for next race in the TAMS season. Five drivers suffered motor problems in practice and qualifying, while Jason Ray set the fastest time with a 15.597 in the Ranch FM 92/The Shop, Automotive Repair/Signology/Texsun Tinting/Heil Chassis. Ray drew a zero for the invert to start the field straight up, with current points leader, Chris Swenson on his flank. As the 17 cars took the green, ray and Swenson stayed glued together at the nerf bars, running that way until Swenson took charge at the end of lap two. By lap five the lead duo had put a big gap back to Jerry Schild in third, while Lawrence Mikulencak had moved up to fifth from his fourth row start. David Machen brought out the yellow hankie on lap 7 with a harmless spin that allowed the field to close up. On the restart Swenson got a slight two car advantage over Ray, but Ray closed back in quickly. Keith Sandefur got inside Schild on lap 10 to grab third, while Ray was pressuring Swenson for the lead. Ray would close in through the corners, but Swenson would power out on the straights. The leaders ran up on heavy traffic at the mid point with Swenson, Ray, Sandefur, Schild and Mikulencak rounding out the top five. Despite battling amongst themselves the top two had a full straightaway lead over Sandefur. Lap 27 saw the caution fly again when newcomer Jeff Smith spun, erasing the big lead of the dynamic duo. Swenson got a good lead on the restart as Ray slipped up in turn four. Mikulencak, Joey Hienaman and Ray Doyon were having a good battle for fifth when Machen and Smith again brought out the yellow, as Machen got into and spun Smith in turn 3. Ray again got loose on the restart and had fight hard to hold off Sandefur and Schild, as Swenson got a huge advantage. A lap 37 caution slowed the pace again as Machen looped his mount between three-four. Swenson inched out to a slight lead while Ray had a five car length gap back to Schild, with Mikulencak getting by Sandefur for fourth. Ray’s chances of a win came to an end when he went spinning off turn two with five to go. Swenson got a good jump on green leaving Schild to battle with Mikulencak for second. Mikulencak was able to make the pass with three to go, but Swenson was long gone. Swenson powered off to capture his fourth win a row at Thunder Hill Raceway, putting his Gain/A+Cash/Synergyn/B and A Automotive/Spreen Racing Engines/Swenson Chassis into victory lane again.
