ROMCO 125 @ Thunder Hill Raceway 6-21-03

By J M Hallas

Winner Dodges Bullet, Points’ Leader Doesn’t

24 ROMCO Super Late models timed in with local hot shoe, Heath Stewart the quickest in qualifying, turning the 3/8 mile D-shaped track at 14.651 seconds in his All Season Air/Southside Wrecker/Insty Prints/Gladwin Paints/Sun Signs/Volunteer Performance/ Monte Carlo. With the normal four car invert, two time THR winner, Eddy Wallace sat on the pole with Chris Davidson, in a car borrowed from John Heil, on the outside.

Wallace got the lead on green as C. Davidson got hung out to dry on the high side falling to fifth, while Stewart had the same trouble and settled in eighth. Point’s leader coming in, Brandon Bendele quickly put the pressure on Wallace as the top four of Wallace, Bendele, Bradley Riethmeyer and Tommy Grimes built a slight margin.

The leaders were soon into lap traffic, catching slower cars by lap six. Robert Richardson brought out the first yellow on lap 19 as he spun off turn three. The top ten stayed nose to tail on the restart as lap cars parted the field. Lap 29 saw the caution fly again as Josh Trees went for a spin. Back under green the top two of Wallace and Bendele began to edge ahead.

Lap 32 saw Phillip Hollis spin in front of the leaders, Wallace slowed with Bendele pushing him out of harms way. But Bendele left himself no where to go and sideswiped the car of Hollis, ending his night, along with the points lead. Wallace was reassigned his lead position for the restart.

Wallace got out to a lead on green, while the young Riethmeyer tried to hold off the veteran Grimes for second. Grimes was able to make the pass on lap 56, leaving Riethmeyer stuck in the high line. Riethmeyer fell back and tried to make a hole as he cut in front of Stewart. The two made contact with Riethmeyer spinning to slow the action on lap 57.

As the crossed flags were shown it was Wallace, Grimes, C. Davidson, Colt James and Greg Davidson, fresh off his Texas Motor Speedway win, rounding out the top five. Wallace got three cars on Grimes and C Davidson on the restart, while G Davidson was looking for a way around James for fourth.

C. Davidson continued to pressure Grimes, as Stewart and Riethmeyer worked their way back up. T Wade Welch got by G. Davidson on lap 82 for fifth and quickly ran down James. Welch made the pass to grab fourth on lap 88. Caution came back out on lap 93 when Danny Pike’s car stopped in the pit exit. Eddie Butt spun on the restart and as the field came to yellow and slowed, Jay Watson slammed the front stretch wall.

Grimes tried a move on green, but Wallace held him off and inched away. Stewart continued to move back up getting past G. Davidson for fifth, as C. Davidson laid the heat on Grimes for second. Wallace had built a three second advantage with ten to go as Grimes and C Davidson continued their scrap for second. As the white flag flew, Wallace added another second to his lead and easily grabbed his third THR win in a row, piloting the MATCO Tools/Henna Chevrolet/ Longneck Wrench/Leroy Porter Racing/Monte Carlo.

G. Davidson took over the points’ lead with his sixth place finish, and Bendele’s falling to eighteenth after his accident.
