Thunder Hill Raceway 5-31-03

By J M Hallas

In the local classes, only 6 car started the Limited Late Model main. Heat race winner Leland Waddell got the lead on lap 1, only to get passed by Robert Stewart on lap 2. Stewart led until lap 10 when he blew something in the driveline, forcing him to the infield. James Reeder took over and from there is a was a run away win for him in his Marshalls Traveland/Family Chiropractics/Austin Hydro Gas/Pro Kits/Ford Taurus.

The Street Stocks timed in with Bobby LaFont setting the fastest time with a 16.796. LaFont would start mid-pack with the invert, putting Buck Bassey and Marc Currey on the front row of the 15 car field. Bassey got the lead on lap 1 and after several cautions for spins was still holding the point at halfway. The top five at the mid-point were Bassey, Cary Staap, Currey, Jim Teague and LaFont.

The top three had begun to pull away until a lap 20 caution for a spin by Marvin Buck bunched the field. In the final laps Bassey was able to hold off Staap, while the battle went on for fifth between LaFont, Robert Walton and Doug Ayers, who had moved up from the tail. Bassey took the win, with Staap’s second place finish and LaFont falling to seventh the two are now tied for Street Stock points with 505.

Robert Lizotte got the Sportsmanship Award for the night. During early racing it looked like Lizotte had been spun by Ayers, who was being sent to the tail. Lizotte stopped and told officials that his car jumped out of gear, causing Ayers to run into him and not to penalize Ayers for the incident. Kudos to Lizotte for his honesty, it would have easy just to let it stand and get his position back. There should be more guys like Lizotte portraying a good image to the youngsters that will be the future racers.
