Texas IMCA Nationals Sunday results/recaps

Recommended Posts

Sunday’s 24 car IMCA Modified A-qualifier, started with Jeremy Willis and Trent Crawford on row one. Willis got the point on green, and by lap five the top five had begun to inch away. Mac Harmon, Chris Watkins and Neal Flowers had a good battle going on for the final transfer spot. Willis’ luck ended on lap 7 when he broke handing the lead over to Crawford. Crawford then eased away as the halfway point came, showing Willis, Dennie Gieber, Brandon Watson, Brian Davis and PJ Egbert in the top five.

B. Davis got inside Watson to grab the third spot and took off after Gieber. Crawford had built a good lead as the race wound into the final laps. B. Davis was able to close in on Gieber for second with two to go. The pack still battling for the transfer got together, sending Ronnie Davis spinning to the infield. At the checkers it Crawford in his South West Sign Service/Tranz Care/HOT Chassis taking the victory.

24 of Texas’ fastest modifieds for this weekend lined up for the 25 lap Big A-main, paced to green by Cross and Crawford. As the green flew Cross grabbed the lead, while Gieber and Hathcock Battled side by side for third. In the pack they were 3 wide for 10th-12th on lap two. By lap five Cross had built a ten car length lead over Crawford, as the battle for 10th narrowed to only side by side racing. Cross ran out to nearly a full straightaway lead on lap 10, with Crawford having a comfortable margin over Hathcock in third,

As the crossed flags were shown it was Cross, Crawford, Hathcock, Gieber and B. Davis in the top five spots. Lap 16 saw Hathcock break and pull off from third, while at the same time Killingsworth and Sisson were battling for 10th. Killingsworth hopped a tire and stopped to bring out a caution. Cross had a lap car buffer on the restart and quickly pulled away from Crawford. Egbert was able to get sixth spot away from Smith as the race approached five to go.

By now Cross had again gotten away from Crawford by 10 car lengths, Crawford had gap back to Gieber and B. Davis fighting for third, as well as Campbell and Egbert’s battle for fifth. With one lap to go Sliva spun coming out of turn two to set up a green, white checker finish. Cross tried a late, slow restart, but that stacked the pack as they piled into the corner. Albert got spun and hit by Watson, with several other suffering sheet metal damage in the melee. McAllister-Kerr suffered a broken front end ending her 8th place run against all the men. As the gren flew again, Cross took off leaving a few battles in mid pack. At the checkers it was Cross in the Eubanks Body Shop/Harris Auto Leasing/Parts House Racing Engines/Reeds Cabinets/Harris winning the war, but then losing the motor as Egbert would claim it after the race.

Sunday’s IMCA Stock A-qualifier was led to green by Robert Ferron and Brandon Ellison. The first lap got ugly quick when Kenny Timmons got turned in front of the pack after a three wide battle. About 10 cars suffered some damage in the chain-reaction crash. Once under green, Ellison got the lead and started to move away from the field. Robert Jones started spinning but got straightened out after getting hit by Chester Fisher. Ellison just kept adding to his lead, while Ferron and Charles Brewer fought it out for second.

By halfway Ellison had nearly a full straight lead, with Ferron, Brewer, Chad Estes and Chris Davis rounding out the top five. The only caution flew on lap 13 when Roscoe Dickerson spun into the infield tires. Ellison used the two laps between he and Ferron to get a big jump once under green. A good battle raged for second as they were three wide through lap traffic with five to go. Ellison was long gone, but Estes and Brewer were still vying for second. Ellison took the win in his Automotive Machine Shop/Ellison Trucking/Big Worm Motorspots/Trackside Graphix/CTX Mortgage Co./Destroyer Chassis.

With field of 24 set for the Big 25 lap A-main, Pritchett and Ellison paced the group in row one. Pritchett was quick to grab the lead while Estes and Ellison ran side by side for third. Pritchett and Sustaire began to inch away, while Ellison fell into the clutches of Evans for fourth. The top ten then singled out in pursuit of Pritchett who was starting to get away. Pritchett lost some ground to Sustaire as he ran up on a big pack of traffic fighting for position and trying to stay on the lead lap. Sustaire closed to the bumper, taking a look low, but Pritchett slammed the door.

At the mid point it was Pritchett and Sustaire side by side for the lead, followed by the “E’s”, Estes, Evans and Ellison. Pritchett resecured the point and on lap 14 Sustaire ran into the back of the slowing car of Mohon. Sustaire half spun as third through fifth scattered to miss him. On the restart Estes tried to hang on to Pritchett’s rear bumper, but Pritchett was able to get a car length ahead. Estes would be able to close in the corners, but lose ground on the straights as he attempted to get the lead from Pritchett.

Williams, Ezell and Kirkpatrick had their own little war going for ninth, as they ran three wide on lap 18. Ezell was the loser in that deal as he wound up on top of an infield tire to bring out a caution on lap 20. On the restart, the middle of the pack got antsy with Ferron spinning and collecting Batt, Miller, Miles and Mohon. Finally back to green for the five lap shootout to the finish, Pritchett quickly got a five car “Advantage” over Estes. The current National points leader would go on to take the checkers in his Artys Paint & Body/Toms Glass/CA’s Auto/Oasis Bar and Grill/SouthWest Engines/Advantage Race Car. The land rush was then on to the claim area as about 8 cars wheeled in.
