About 110 IMCA modifieds vied for the 24 starting spots for Sat. nights A-qualifier. Missy McAllister-Kerr and Bryan Smith paced the field to green. The duo stayed door to door on lap one, with Kelly Cross looking to get under both. B. Smith got the lead on lap two, only to have his hood fly up.(Who's job were the hood pins?LOL) Cross got underneath and passed B. Smith on lap three. The yellow flew on lap 4 when Tony Keigley slowed and backed up the pack. Big Mike McCarthy "got bounced around like a pinball" and spun in the melee. Cross got out to a big lead on the restart, while Vince Ogle spun, but kept going. Brian Killingsworth moved in to battle with B. Smith, on lap 9, despite a failing steering box. As the crossed flags were shown the top five were Cross with a healthy lead over B. Smith, Killingsworth, Mike Hathcock and Darryl Campbell, up from his sixth row start. By lap 12 Cross had a full straightaway lead over a four car battle for second. Lap 14 Hatchcock, charging up from his fifth row starting spot, was able to use the high groove to get past Killingsworth for third. But Killingsworth battled back to get the spot on lap 15. Hathcock, on the high side got by Killingsworth and moved along side B. Smith on lap 16. Campbell followed behind Hathcock, moving around both B. Smith and Killingsworth on lap 17. By now Cross was running in traffic, but with the lead he had built was able to pick his way through without challenge. Cross(Amarillo) in his Eubanks Body Shop/Harris Auto Leasing/Parts House Racing Engines/Reeds Cabinets/ Harris Chassis took the win by nearly a half track.
