JamesHigdon
Chris, I looked up the numbers in Ed Staffel's Chevrolet Small Block Interchange manual and came up with the following. The 458042 doesn’t exactly match any numbers in this book, which is fairly complete, but it does come close to this number-458642, 1967-1970, 350,400. If you’re sure on the 458 I would reexamine the 0 in your code as 458642 is all this manual lists. To identify if they’re 350 or 400 heads look for steam ports (the other head wont have them, they’re between the combustion chambers and are just small round holes), 400 heads have steam ports, 350 heads usually don’t. The second number, 3832454, does not come within 2 numbers of any serials in my book, but small block Chevy part numbers where grouped into similar classes and the 383 class includes 55-56 265s (3836839 & 3837065), 57-67 283 or 327 (3836842), or 55-62 265 or 283 (3837064). The numbers under the GM are on all Chevy heads and I have never figured out what they mean? Your best bet for either of these single heads would probably be Ebay and someone looking to complete a matched set of heads for a restoration project. The date codes are also listed in the heads and for someone doing a numbers matching resto if one of your heads has the casting numbers and date codes they need their almost priceless. The date codes are usually under the longer numbers you listed and if you want include them and I’ll try and figure them out. James Higdon
txtom
Check the one head to see if the number is 3932454. If it, it came off a '69-'73 307, or a '69-'79 350 truck. Probably got 1.72 intake and 1.5 exhaust valves The other might be 468642, which has the same valves as the head above, and came out of a '79-'83 350. Either one sounds like a good trot-line weight. JamesHigdon
As far as anchors go, if its an older 265,283 or 327 head it would make a good anchor, if the head is actually a 393 series and for a 307 i wouldnt use it for an anchor as it may scare away fish and swimmers. Seriously though, everything is worth something on ebay and if it is a 383 series (50s or 60s sbc) head then it and the other are probably worth something on ebay ???
