Summit Bracket Series Final Brings Out Best in Racers

Saturday had become early Sunday morning and there were just two cars left to go down the Memphis International Raceway (MIR) track before the wraps were put on the 2015 return of the Summit Bracket Racing Series presented by COMP Cams.

 

The Ricks Powder Coating Super Pro class was down to two drivers, Chad Roach and Brian Anglin. Even though it was late, neither driver thought it was too late to run this last race the right way. Roach waited an extra minute in his truck for Anglins dragster to pull back around to the lanes.

 

 

Anglin pulled up alongside Roach, they flashed thumbs-up to each other and drove to the starting line to see who that nights winner would be.

 

We live close to one another, so it felt good that we were in the finals together, Roach said. Weve raced one another several times, but its been a while since weve met this far in the bracket.

 

Roach ultimately got the victory when Anglin went off the line .002 seconds too early, fouling out and handing win to Roach at the starting line. Roachs victory lap clocked in a 7.552 seconds at 60.57 mph on an index of 6.20 seconds.

 

I had a lot of luck tonight, Roach said. My truck ran good. Its a great way to end the night. Hopefully I can use this to carry some momentum through the rest of the season.

 

Anglin was satisfied with the runner-up finish, saying good nights like this are how championships are built.

 

With the way things have been going the last several years, Im blessed to be here, he said. You cant go wrong when youre runner-up, you take home a nice check and everybodys happy.

 

Other winners on Saturday night were TJ Tracey in B&B Towing, Foot Brake, Buddy Ferrell in Top ET, Jeremy Avent in 7.0 Heads-Up, Steve Wilson in 6.0 Heads-Up, Tyler Poindexter in RT Turbines Junior Dragster, Cliff Hubbard in DOT Street and Devin Johnson in the RT Turbines Junior Dragster Second Chance.

 

After fighting his way through five stacked rounds of competition in the B&B Towing Foot Brake competition he caught a couple of fortunate breaks on his way to the victory. Tracy earned his way to a single pass in the semifinals with a spot on run in a win over Colton Chapman.

 

With a free pass to the finals, the only question left was who was going to face Tracey in the final: Joseph Spicer or Robo Marshall. Spicer got the win light when Marshall left too early, but he was legging out the run for lane choice in the final. Right near the finish, Spicers engine let go in a cloud of smoke.

 

Unable to make repairs in time, Traceys free pass to the final became a free pass in the final. All Tracy did was break the beams at the green for the win and back up from the starting line.

 

The 6.0 and 7.0 classes were contested for the first time this year and Wilson got things started with a win over Caffey Broadus in the 6.0 competition. Wilson cut a .005 second light and cruised to a win when Broadus broke out. Wilson crossed the line in 6.024 at 114.13 mph. Broadus came in under the index time with a 5.997 at 114.39.

 

A big advantage off the starting line was important for Avent in the 7.0 class. His reaction time of .007 seconds was important in his hole shot win over David Smith. Avent finished in 7.085 at 93.50 mph which wasnt as quick at Smiths 7.062 at 96.05, but it wasnt quick enough to overcome his slower .031 light.

 

In Top ET, Ferrell got the win when his opponent Preston Davis broke out on the 7.95 second index. Ferrell crossed the finish in 8.029 at 146.99 mph. Davis had a little too much horsepower in his front engine dragster finishing in 7.246 seconds at 174.32 mph.

 

Hubbard won a close final with Todd Berry in RT Turbines DOT Street. Hubbard gave up a little time at the starting line but ran a 14.720 at 88.82 mph on a 14.71 index to cross the finish line first against Berrys 10.791 at 112.81 mph on a 10.72 index.

 

Poindexter went the buyback route to his win in the RT Turbines Junior Dragster division. He fouled out in the first round, but bounced back with three solid runs before clocking in an 8.239 second pass at 72.17 mph on a 8.18 index to get the victory over Chris Huff, who broke out with a 7.936 at 83.62 mph on a 7.96 index.

 

Devin Johnson won the RT Turbines Jr. Dragster Second Chance race when his opponent broke out. Johnson ran a 9.307 at 60.12 mph on an index of 9.15. Runner-up Devan Lowe ran an 8.529 at 75.65 mph on an 8.68.

 

The Summit Bracket Racing Series presented by COMP Cams returns on Saturday, April 4 which includes 6.0 and 7.0 racing. Gates open at 4 p.m.
