Ryan Bard Memorial, Southern Challenge @ Abilene Speedway 10/17-19

Abilene, Tx.,(Oct. 17th, 2014) Abilene Speedway played host to the 2014 version of Southern Challenge honoring Ryan Bard, a young driver who tragically lost his life after an accident and fire. Drivers from across the mid-south converged on the 1/4 mile, high-banked red clay oval in search of the $75,000 in prize money offered.

 

Four of the IMCA classes are featured over the three-day weekend (Modifieds, Southern Sportmods, I-Stock and Hobby Stock) as well as the ASW Street Stocks and Factory Stocks. Saturday and Sunday will also see the Texas State Young Guns, Jr. Mini Stock Championship.

 

Friday night the IMCA Modifieds, running for $3,000 on Sunday, will qualify five to Sunday Big A-main and five to the Big B-main. Everyone else redraws for Saturday adding five and five again to Sundays show.

 

The IMCA Southern Sportmods, I-Stocks and Hobby Stocks will run a similar procedure, depending on car count. The SSM's winner pockets $2,500, while the I-Stock victory takes home $2,000 and Hobby Stocks $1,000. The ASW Street Stocks and Factory Stocks run for $1,500.

 

Alvarado Awarded Modified Win

Ricky Alvarado(Delta, Colo.) was awarded the IMCA Modified feature win after Kevin Sustaire was unable to pass post-race tech(valve spring retainers). Sustaire, who lead all twenty laps flag to flag, had Alvarado in pursuit but unable to stay within striking distance throughout the race.

 

Driving in Tommy Fain's Hanner Super Center, Abilene Race Rads, God is Awesome Racing, Air1, five1seven Designs, crate powered, CAM Chassis, Alvarado quickly dove in behind Sustaire at the start. Coming to the checkers Alvarado had Toby Herring on his tail.

Crabtree Conquers Sportmods with Sweep

Robby Crabtree(Abilene) scored a convincing win the the 20-lap, 20-car IMCA Southern Sportmod feature. Trevor Egbert grabbed the early lead while Crabtree fell in line fourth on the start. Quickly using track experience to his advantage, Crabtree got past Egbert for the top spot on lap 3.

 

Gabe Tucker got second from Egbert near halfway and only got close to Crabtree under yellow. Crabtree got clear of Tucker while Justin Shaw, Egbert and Bradley Poor ran three wide for third. At the checkers it was Crabtree in the CrabTree Motorsports,TransOil, Subic, Howells, Cowboy Pump Service, Fletchers Custom Engines, IRP Chassis.

Battered Batt Survives for I-Stock Honors

Despite getting clipped by a lapped car, Jason Batt(Harker Heights) was able to hold off Matt Guillaume and David Phillips in the 20-lap I-Stock feature. It took three tries to get the 20-car field under green with Batt getting out front. Batt was chased down by Phillips who got out front on lap 12 using the middle groove.

 

Batt Battled back to get the lead again on lap 15, but got clipped by the spinning car of Malcolm Kill. After being checked for safety, Batt continued in the lead with IMCA Stock Car national runner up, Guillaume on his tail. With the bumper cover flying behind him, Batt kept Guillaume in his wake to capture the victory in the Hoffman Fabrication, Teresa Garvin CPA, Brazos Roofing, EQ Heads, Garvin Machine Shop, Victory Chassis.

Roller Rocks for Hobby Stock Win

Andy Roller(Waco) took the top spot in the 15-car IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Roller and Jeremy Oliver put on thrilling lead swapping battle through the latter stages of the 20 lapper. Oliver got the point from early leader Chase Parson and was quickly caught by roller, who started mid-pack.

Using the high side, Roller got along side Oliver on lap 14 and got the nose out front on lap 15.

 

Oliver kept the pressure on getting back past on lap 18. The two were door to door as the white flag waved with Roller, still up top, getting out front on the back stretch and then held Oliver to the checkers in the Hammock Racing, J&J Carbs, Howards Automatic Transmissions, Berta Bodies, Ben Boat Repair, Southwest Maintenance, KLB Trucking, A&J Custom Paint, Demon Decals, Lambs Muffler, Charger Chassis.

Colyer Captures Street Stock Scramble

Abilene's Joe Colyer grabbed the victory in the 19-car Street Stock/Factory feature in a slam-bang affair. Jayson Garner was out front first but gave way to Chase Neill on lap 4. Colyer worked his way past Neill on lap 6 for the top spot. As the lead group ran up on traffic, Kory Ritchie spun and collected Neill and Garner with Dalton Riley ending up on an infield tire, eliminating second through fourth.

 

Once back to racing Colyer got away while LP O'Neal and Jonathan Wright scrapped it out for second. O'Neal finally secured the spot and got a break with a late caution to close on Colyer. Colyer was able to hold O'Neal off the final few circuits for the win.
