Series Points Leader, Takes Big Hit

By J M Hallas

Series point leader, Chris Swenson came into the San Antonio Speedway race with a 25 point lead over his nearest competitor. But a big first lap crash eliminating him, helping Jason Ray gain ground on Swenson. During the drivers meeting one of the last things series director, Wayne Norrell said was you can’t win the race on the first lap. That advise wasn’t heeded.

18 cars started the 50 lap main event with James Cole, in the Southwest Public Safety/Precision Collision/Swenson Race Chassis, on the pole after setting fast time. Swenson started outside row one and got the jump on green. As the top two came out of SAS’s infamous turn two, Cole pushed up slightly, just clipping the rear of Swenson. Swenson spun and was drilled head-on by Barry Codling, Cole impacted the outside wall and the pack piled in. Also suffering enough damage to put them on the trailer were Joey Hieneman and Russell Dechert. All five drivers were alright, but all were out for the night.

The new front row of Bruce Beddoe and Ray paced the field to green. Beddoe got the point as the green waved, with Newton Barta sliding into second and Ray third. Jerry Schild came out of turn four in the grass, sliding up and nipping Larry Smith, who made a good save and held on to fourth spot. By lap 10 Beddoe had eased ahead to a comfortable lead as the top four separated apart. In the pack there was a good fight going on between Chris Davidson, Don Banker, Chris Snocker and Kenny Huggins. On lap 15 Beddoe caught that pack and was able to negotiate through without losing ground, with Davidson pitting from 10th. Several laps later, Barta would be forced to pit with problems, while running second. This left Beddoe with a four second lead over Ray as the midpoint arrived.

The top five were Beddoe, Ray, Smith, Schild and David Machen at that point with the field fairly well strung out. Beddoe still had a big lead by lap 30, but Schild was closing in on Smith for third. Ray was able to pick up a little ground, shortening the gap to three seconds, but lost it back as he encountered slower cars. After a short battle Schild got third from Smith and took off after Ray. With five to go Schild caught a slowing Ray, giving him a little push down the front straight. In the final laps Davidson finally pitted for good after coming back up to fifth, while Ray was fighting a very ill handling car, almost spinning in every corner. Schild and Smith were able to get around, but Beddoe was long gone, holding nearly a half lap lead. As the checkers flew it was the former seven time Corpus Christi Speedway track champion, Beddoe, in his Smirnoff Ice/Beddoe & Sinard Family Racing/Randys Performance/”91 GRT Chassis(#37),rolling into victory lane.
