Colt Collects ARTS Coin

In ARTS qualifying Bryan Meredith set the standard putting in a lap of 21.399 on the high-banked ½ mile track driving the Amsoil/Austin Auto Supply/Monarch Transmissions/GraphicGuys.com/Meredith Race Engines/TRC Chassis. Meredith the current Lone Star Region points leader continues his stranglehold on the region as well as adding to his National Championship lead.

2003 ARTS champion, Robert Walton and Meredith paced the 16 truck field to green for the 50 lap event. Walton grabbed the lead out of turn two and got sideways coming out turn 4, but was able to hang on and maintain the lead. Todd McLemore and Jon Garrett were door to door for second, with Colt James and Bill Hamilton side by side for 6th on lap 2.

Caution waved on lap 3 when Shawn Lehman and Jeff Rosenbeck made contact and tagged the wall in turn 1. On the restart, Garrett tried the high side to get by Meredith for second and pulling McLemore along to third. McLemore then got by Garrett for second lap 5 as James grabbed fifth. But McLemore would slide high in turns 3-4 and bounce off the wall to bring out a yellow.

On green, James got a good jump and grabbed third, while Larry Latham and Keith Patrick made a little contact. James was looking to get second from Garrett on lap 8, with the two side by side on lap 10. Latham moved along side Hamilton on lap 11 as they battled for fifth. James finally completed the pass on Garrett for second on lap 12 and was closing on Walton by lap 15.

After a short door to door fight, James grabbed the top pot on lap 16. By lap 20 the top eight had separated into two four truck packs. Walton and Garrett traded a little paint on lap 22 while they slugged it out for the runner-up spot. At halfway it was James with big lead, Walton, Garrett, Meredith and Latham rounding out the top five.

James maintained his big lead with second through fourth running in a tight pack. The final yellow flew on lap 34 when Walton was forced to check up behind a lap truck. Garrett wasn’t able to stop as quick and tapped Walton sending him spinning. Walton would collect Hamilton during the spin. James, who had lost a huge lead, quickly got away as green waved again leaving them in his mirror.

With ten to go, James had a 10 truck advantage over Garrett, who had a slight lead over Meredith, with a gap back to Latham, Patrick and Rosenbeck. Meredith got by Garrett for second on lap 43, but James was off in the distance. James in the Spillar Custom Hitches/TRC Chassis, was still pulling away as the white waved and was able to grab the win by a comfortable margin. James had originally qualified the #60 truck, but after problems were found, jumped into the spare truck of Jimmy Spillar and started at the tail of the field.
