Murray Main Man in Mod Main

The 33-car three wide 40 lap IMCA Modified A-main started with Kelly Shryock, Mark Noble and National points leader, David Murray on the front row. On the first try, the top three had just gotten away when Benji LaCrosse and Jeff Shroyer made contact, causing LaCrosse to spin and collect Jimmy Gustin. As green waved again, Noble beat Shryock into turn 1 and Murray ran along side for second.

Noble held the lead on lap 1 with Murray looking inside for the top spot. But caution was back out after the first circuit for a spin by Kevin Stoa. As Noble took off on the restart, Shryock got inside Murray and took second. Ryan Ruter was able to snag the fifth spot from Jeff Anderson on lap 3, as the top three began top string out. Jay Noteboom then moved in to challenge Anderson as the two swapped the sixth spot.

Murray cloosed back in on Shryock on lap 9 and was looking low on the back stretch going high into turns 3-4. With the top three nose to tail at lap 10, it was two and three wide in the pack. Gustins troubles continued and ended on lap 11 when he sailed off the turn 1 hill and rolled over to bring out a red. On the restart, Kevin Larkins and Travis Underdahl made contact sending Underdahl for a spin.

As green flew the top three hung together on the back stretch, with Shryock peeking inside Noble. But in the pack, Jerry Luloff and Reese Coffee got tangled. In the stack up Gary Clark and Jon Thompson also got hooked togetrher. Shryock dove it in low as the race resumed and got inside Noble down the back stretch to snag the top spot on lap 14 with Murray following him through.

Murray cleared Noble for second on lap 15, while Ruter got by Denny Stoneburner. Noble tried to fight back on lap 16, but red came out again. This time it was LaCrosse adding to his bad luck sailing over the hill end for end in turns 1-2. Al Hejna stalled just as green came back out to slow the action again. Once the race was able to get back under green, Shryock and Murray got a good lead.

Shryock and Murray were wheel to wheel on lap 17, while Ruter and Anderson were back it again this time battling for fourth. At the crossed flags it was Shryock, Murray and Noble side by side for second, Ruter and Anderson rounding out the top five. Anderson got by Ruter a lap later to take fourth. Murray reeled Shryock in on lap 22 and ran side by side for the lead on lap 23. Murray made to pass stick to lead lap 24

Lap 25 saw Larkins move in to battle with Ruter for 5th, while Shryock and Noble were dueling it out for second. Larkins was the hottest car on the track, literally, as he had a fire blazing away in rear deck area. The race was finally flagged to get the burning Larkins car to fire bottles as quickly as possible. Shryock ducked down low on the restart and got along side Murray, but Murray held him off.

Lap 30 saw Murray on the high side, Shryock on the low side and Noble looking for a third line. The fight for fourth continued on with Ruter, Noteboom and Anderson three wide and swapping positions and paint corner for corner. Lap 33 the top three were motoring away. Back in the pack a good eight car scrap was going on for 12th spot as drivers fought for every position they could get.

Noble moved down on the very bottom to try to get by Shryock on lap 34. Anderson, still slugging it out with Ruter and Noteboom, slid over the top in turns 1-2. He returned to the turn 2 entry and stopped to bring out the final yellow on lap 36.

Murray got a good jump as green flew for the final laps. Ruter was trying to get another spot as he and Noble battled for third. The duo stayed side by side with two to go, as Murray got some more breathing room. As the double checkers waved it was the two time National Champion, Murray in the Ultimate Machine/Jason Schoenberger Racing/Bell Farms/Pony Express/Top Notch Auto/Victory Racing Wheels/Layne/Signs by Robbie/BMS Chassis taking his first Super Nationals victory.

Back-to-Back for Brands

It was 30 cars for 30 laps in the IMCA Stock Car main event, led to green by Jason Czarapata, Randy Brands and Wyatt Olson. Brands from the middle row was first out of turn 2 to get the lead on lap 1. As the top five sorted out single file, the rest of the pack was still three wide. Jay Schmidt moved in to battle with Olson for second on lap 3. Lap 4 saw National points leader Mike Nichols break and barely be able to roll off track.

Brands and Schmidt began to pull ahead with still some two wide battling in the pack. Czarapata and Olson were fighting door to door for 3rd on lap 7. BJ Dulock and Rod Snellenberger made contact on lap 8 sending Dulock to the pit with a flat. By lap 10 Brands had built a good lead on Schmidt who had a good gap back to Olson, Czarapata and Shannon Volkman who had worked his way up from 18th.

Just before halfway the one and only yellow waved when Dean Taylor spun and collected Rick Brown. Olson took a peek inside Schmidt as the green came back out. Coming to the crossed flags it was Brands, Olson, Schmidt, Czarapata and Volkman in the top five spots. Damon Murty made a late run to grab fifth from Volkman on lap 16, while Schmidt and Czarapata were side by side for third.

Volkman, Schmidt and Murty were three wide for the fourth spot on lap 18. Brands had quite a good lead with ten to go over Olson as the battle for fifth shaped up, literally. Murty got by Czarapata for third on lap 21, while Schmidt and Volkman battled for sixth. With five to go Brands was increasing his lead, as Travis VanStraten moved into the top five. VanStraten gave up that spot a lap later when Benji LaCrosse got the spot.

As the checkers came out it was Brands in the Iowa State Bank/Harris Racing/R&K Installaition/RBR Chassis car with the win. Brands win made IMCA Stock Car history as he backed up last years victory, the first time anyone has won two in a row in the class.

Smith Shines in Hobby Stocks

Doug Seidl and Chad Koch paced the 24 car IMCA Hobby Stock feature to green for 25 lap event. At the drop of the green it looked like the stock or modified mains, as it was three wide out of turn 2, when Donovan Smith stuck his nose in the fight. Koch would be first to the line to lead lap 1. The top eight separated out, while the field still slugged it out three and four wide.

National points leader Dustin Smith, would spin from mid pack on lap 3, but continue without bringing out a caution. In the meantime, brother Donovan was trying to hold off Paul Shepherd for the third spot. Koch had a five car length over Seidl at lap 5 as the top three separated themselves from Shepherd and Randy Embrey.

At the halfway point it was Koch, Seidl, Do. Smith, Shepherd and Embrey running in the top five. Jerod Weston, Hans Houfek and Patrick Stansberry were three wide for 12th on lap 13. Seidl’s chance at a Super Nationals win went away as he started smoking badly and was black flagged while running second.

Embrey got around Shepherd for third on lap 16, while Chris Jensen moved in on Shepherd for fourth. With five to go Koch had a good lead over second through fifth. But that lead would be erased when yellow waved on lap 21 after Matt Guillaume and Pat Cross went off the turn three hill.

Terry Shaffer got by Shepherd for fifth as the green waved again. Do. Smith began to turn up the heat on Koch for the lead on lap 22 as he took a look inside. Do. Smith would be able to get by Koch on lap 23 as the top four ran together. Do. Smith was able to hold off all challengers as the checkers waved, giving him his first ever Super Nationals win
