The first of two IMCA Modified, 20 lap, mains started with Don McCown and Jim Lynch on the front row. Lynch got the jump on green in turns 1-2. But it Kelly Shryock sailing from his fourth starting spot grabbing the top spot down the back stretch to lead lap 1. By lap 3 the top three of Shryock, Lynch and Jay Noteboom had started to pull ahead. Noteboom took second from Lynch on lap 3, while pack stacked up two and three wide behind McCown.

Noteboom took a look low on Shryock for the lead on lap 4, with the duo wheel to wheel on lap 5. The caution waved on lap 6 when Vern Bliss spun on the back stretch. Travis Spaulding got by Scott Mullen on the restart for fifth. Shryock and Noteboom began to put distance on the field. Jon Thompson, Mullen and Jeff Shroyer raced three wide for the sixth spot on lap 8.

At the crossed flags it was Shryock, Noteboom, Lynch, Brian Knoell and Spaulding in the top five. Shryock then started to inch away from Noteboom, who had a good gap to Lynch, who had 5 cars over Knoell. Lap 15 saw Shroyer on the bottom get around Spaulding for 5th.
