Witt Bags Career Win #200

After winning #199 on the final lap in Pleasanton(I-37 Speedway) on Friday night, IMCA National points contender Henry Witt went in search of career win #200 on the 1/4 mile clay track in the heart of the hill country. Unfortunately Mother Nature didn’t cooperate and only the heat race was run to set the field for a double feature on Sunday afternoon.

In the make-up feature, Jamie Campbell and track points leader, Randy Yount led the field to green. Campbell, Henry Witt and Yount went three wide into turn 1 with Campbell coming out with the lead. Witt jumped to the high side and got along side Campbell to make the pass for the lead on lap 3. On lap 4 George Fink dove inside both Yount and Campbell to move from fourth into second.

Yount and Steve Whitaker jr. both got by Campbell, while Fink closed slightly on Witt. Caution waved on lap 7 when Whitaker spun and collected Yount in turn 3. On the restart Greg Dinsmore was trying low on Yount for fourth allowing Whitaker to charge from the back and get by. At the crossed flags it was Witt, Fink, Yount, Whitaker and Dinsmore in the top five.

Witt started to pull away as Fink’s car began to slow after halfway. Lap 12 saw Whitaker and Yount battling again running side by side. Once Whitaker cleared Yount, he quickly tracked down Fink and made the pass for second on lap 13. With five to go Fink was trying to hold off Yount and Dinsmore for third as Whitaker was slowly sneaking up on Witt.

Whitaker closed to within four car lengths with two to go, but could never get close enough to mount a serious challenge. At the checkers it was the Waco veteran, Witt grabbing career win #200 in his Affiliated Auto Glass/Dick Scott Ford/ Centex GMC/Midwest Motorsports/Wilson Chassis Co./Bartell Motorsports/Slideracing.com/Danz Designs/Fastshafts/Allied Racing Wheels/Superior Race Fuels/Hoffman Chassis.

Young Gun Whitaker Best in Sunday Show

In the special Sunday show, Jamie Campbell and Randy Yount once again held the front row for the 20 lap main event. This time it was Yount getting out front in turn 1 to move into the lead, while Steve Whitaker jr and IMCA Modified Rookie of the Year contender, Trevor Egbert moved into second and third. Henry Witt got by George Egbert on lap 1 to snare the fourth spot. Whitaker got around Yount on the second circuit to lead lap 3.

On lap 4 Witt and T. Egbert were battling for third as Whitaker was inching away. After passing T. Egbert, Witt ran down Yount for second and took the position on lap 6. T. Egbert got along side Yount with them going three wide past a lapped car. Coming to halfway it was Whitaker, Witt, Yount, T. Egbert and G. Egbert rounding out the top five.

T. Egbert got tangled with a lap car on 10 to bring out the yellow. The lap car was charged with the caution, giving T. Egbert his spot back. As the race resumed Whitaker and Witt got a good advantage over Yount in third. The lead duo ran up on lap traffic with five to go, Whitaker got by cleanly, but Witt got squeezed between two slower cars and spun in turn 2. Again the lap traffic was charged with causing the caution, putting Witt back in second.

Witt took a peek inside Whitaker on the restart, while T. Egbert and Yount battled wheel to wheel for third and G. Egbert and Ben Keyser were side by side for fifth. During that battle contact was made sending Keyser into the front stretch wall and G. Egbert to the infield on lap 18. Whitaker got a jump on Witt as green waved again, but Witt tried to dive low in turns 1-2. This time it was the young gun, Whitaker holding off the veteran to grab the victory in Whitaker Racing Team/WW Bodies/Randy Young Automotive/Young Chassis
