By J M Hallas

Rookie Rules Race

The IMCA Modified main started with Raymond Tague and Max Helms on the front row of the 14 car field. Tague was first into turn 1 but spun on the back stretch with Steve Whiatker jr and Bennie Campbell jr spinning behind him and Greg Dinsmore sliding to a stop high in turn 3. On the second start, new polesitter, Nick Hardcastle grabbed the top spot to lead lap 1.

The caution waved at the completion of lap1 when Jeremy Davenport and Campbell got together in turn 2. On the restart, Greg Dinsmore, Steve Whitaker jr and Henry Witt all got by a slowing Mickey Helms to move into the top five. Witt then passed Dinsmore and Whitaker to grab third. Mc. Helms would roll to stop on track to bring out caution.

As the top three began to get away once back to green, Davenport spun to slow the action again. IMCA Rookie of the Year contender, Trevor Egbert gave Hardcastle a look inside as the race resumed and after a little wheel banging, fell back in line. Whitaker snared fourth spot from Dinsmore on lap 4 and moved in to challenge Witt. In a pass rarely seen, the young Whitaker used the high groove to snag third from the national points contender, Witt.

Track points leader,Whitaker continued to use the upper lane and got along side Egbert with the two side by side for second on lap 6. Finding the top side to his liking, Whitaker then ran wheel to wheel with Hardcastle for the lead and got the point on lap 8. After watching Whitaker sail by high, Hardcastle jumped up top, but lost two spots as both Egbert and Witt got under him.

Coming to halfway Egbert was challenging Whitaker with the duo side by side coming to the crossed flag. Witt, Hardcastle and Danny Brown rounded out the top five at the mid-point. Egbert made the pass stick to take over the lead on lap 11.

Brown snuck by Hardcastle for the fourth spot on lap 14 as the top three inched ahead. Lap 16 saw Witt and Whitaker battling hard for second exchanging a few doughnuts in the process. While those two fought for second, Egbert was able to get a few car lengths lead and would go on to take the victory in Phils Paint & Body/BigTex Autoplex/Bell Pawn/RMC Construction/Nightmare Graphics/E&E Transport/HOT Chassis, his third win of the season.

New Face, Familiar Place

With James Kennett ailing, former I-37 Speedway competitor and current Texas Asphalt Modified Series driver, Chris Swenson stepped in to the famous Bullmobile. There is speculation that driver change was due to a side bet/bounty put on the bull horns adorning the top of the car. However this rumor is unfounded at this time.

Swenson drew the pole and quickly grabbed the lead while Patrick Kelly and Brian Shaw battled for second. Herb Shaw would then move to challenge Kelly for third and get the position. The races only caution came on lap 3 when Kelly spun and collected Chris Snocker. Both were abl;e to continue.

Swenson continued to hold the top spot, but B. Shaw suffered mechanical troubles and pitted from second. This would move his dad, B. Shaw up to second. In the meantime Snocker and Bill Cusack had their own little battle as they swapped the third spot back and forth. As the checkers waved it was Swenson grabbing the gold and finding his way to a familiar place for him, victory lane.

Back to Back, Four for Four

With all the other Friday night IMCA tracks getting rained out early, several of the IMCA Stock drivers made the trip south in search of those valuable points. The IMCA Stocks were combined with the track Super Stocks for the night. Points contender, Duain Pritchett and Chad Estes led the field green, with Estes getting into turn 1 first with Benji Kirkpatrick and Pritchett door to door for second.

Pritchett would slide high in turn 2 and fall from second to fifth, moving Kirkpatrick into second. Caution waved on lap 1 when Jason Honey stopped in turn 2. Kirkpatrick took a peek inside Estes on the restart, but fell back to the clutches of Pritchett. The duo race side by side for laps 3 & 4 before Pritchett retook the spot. Kirkpatrick fought back claiming the position again on lap 5.

This gave Estes the chance to get a slight advantage, while the two swapped the spot.Pritchett got back inside Kirkpatrick on lap 7, allowing BJ Dulock to move in on Kirkpatrick. Estes had built nearly a full straightaway lead at halfway, with Dulock getting past Pritchett for second, while Kirkpatrick and Cory Teakell rounded out the top five.

Kirkpatrick got third from Pritchett as the second through fifth spots were changing in every corner. With five to go Estes still held a good lead with Kirkpatrick pressuring Dulock for second. Dulock would spin during that battle, with Pritchett slamming hard into him. Pritchett was slightly injured when he bent the steering wheel during the crash. Pritchett complained of a sore hand and arm, but refused transport.

With Estes big lead erased, Kirkpatrick began to put the heat on the leader as the race went back to green. Kirkpatrick would get the nose inside Estes in the corners, but Estes would hold on down the straights. The two did a little rubbin’ on lap 18, but neither lost any ground and stayed on the gas. Kirkpatrick took one final shot on the last lap but came up short as Estes in the Central Texas Salvage Poll/Midwest Motorsports/Signs by Nate/SRC Chassis took the win. With that win, Estes is now four for four dating back to his last weeks sweep, with back to back I-37 victories.

MK Wallace got the lead at the start of the 13 car Limited Late Model feature. Team Redneck Racing drivers Gary Hunter and Howie Marcx got by Dennis Hilla to move into second and third. By lap 7 Hunter had caught Wallace, with Marcx closing in as the lead trio pulled away. Jason Honey went up in smoke on lap 8 as he dumped fluid on the track.

On the restart Hunter was looking inside Wallace for lead through the corner, but Wallace would slam the door on the straights. Coming to halfway it was Wallace, Hunter, Marcx and a three wide fight for fourth between Ziggy Reusser, Miguel Mendoza and Sonny Mares. Hunter was still trying to get inside Wallace on lap 12, while Z. Reusser ran down the lead trio.

The yellow waved on that lap when Mares, Carl Pitts and Cliff Reusser tangled in turn 2. C. Reusser suffered an injury to his hand in the melee, requiring only an ice bag. Hunter took a shot for the lead on the restart as the two banged wheels. Cation flew on lap 13 for debris in turn 1 to slow the pace again. This time Hunter grabbed the point on the restart, with Z. Reusser getting around Marcx for third.

Z. Reusser got by Wallace for second and was looking for lead on lap 15. Just as Z. Reusser made to pass on lap 16 he slipped high allowing Hunter to retake the position on lap 17. Wallace brought out the final yellow on lap 18 when he spun battling for second with Z. Reusser. As the checkers waved it was Hunter taking the hard earned win.

In the Pure Stock main, Dubba Hawkins got out front on lap 1, while track points leader, Darin Leonard made a bold four wide pass to move from eighth to second. It didn’t take long for Leonard to grab the top spot as he asserted himself to the lead on lap 2.

From there Leonard would start to build a lead over the field. Adam Torres and Robin Lutholtz would put on a good battle for the runner-up spot. Leonard would go on to take the victory and perhaps start another win streak. Leonard eight race streak came to an end last week, when Jason Kelly got the top spot.
