I-37 Speedway 8/15/04

By J M Hallas

Pleasanton, Texas. I-37 Speedway ran a special Sunday evening show for IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Stocks, along with a make up Modified feature for a race rained out after heat races a few weeks back.

Hardcastle Cashes in

In the make up race, 15 cars took the green paced by Micky Helms and Dale Flanagan. Nick Hardcastle joined the lead duo in turn1, going three wide for the lead, with D. Flanagan getting the advantage to lead lap 1. The caution was out quickly for debris on the track from Jeremy Davenport. On the restart D. Flanagan and Hardcastle were side by side battling for the top spot.

Hardcastle came out on top of that fight to lead lap 2, while Henry Witt worked his way up to fourth. By lap 5 Hardcastle was pulling away from the D. Flanagan, Steve Whitaker, Witt battle. Whitaker slid high in turn 2 allowing Witt to grab the third spot on lap 6. IMCA Rookie of the Year contender and current ROY points leader, Trevor Egbert and Jason Borlace raced wheel to wheel for seventh, while Witt was scrapping it out with D. Flanagan for second.

At the crossed flags the top five were Hardcastle, D. Flanagan, Witt, Whitaker and Danny Brown. On lap 11 Brown got around Whitaker to move into fourth as Steve Whitaker jr and Egbert closed in. Whitaker jr, got by his dad on lap 12 to move into the top five on lap 12.

In the meantime D. Flanagan was still holding off Witt for second. Witt would be able to show the nose to D. Flanagan out of the corners, but was unable to get along side. Hardcastle was loving all this as he was continuing to move away. Hardcastle had nearly a full straightaway lead on lap 16, while Whitaker jr snared fourth from Brown.

Witt was finally able to get by D. Flanagan on lap 18, but Hardcastle was long gone. At the checkers it was Hardcastle driving the AA Automotive Machine/Dubs Garage/Larsen Chassis taking the win. Behind him Brown and D. Flanagan tangled coming to the line. Brown on top of Flanagans hood and Egbert crossed three wide for the fourth spot with no one sure who actually got the position.

Estes Ends with Weekend Sweep

In what I would call the best race of the night, despite only 12 cars starting, the IMCA Stock main took the track led by Kenny Weir and Toby Miller. On the first start, Benji Kirkpatrick got out of turn 2 first but behind him Jason Honey and Cory Teakell got tangled to bring about another start.

The next try saw Weir grab the lead on lap 1, while 2003 I-Stock National Champion and repeat contender, Duain Pritchett was headed to the front. After a bold four wide pass in turns3-4, Pritchett grabbed the top spot on lap 2. Rookie of the Year contender, Jeff Sustaire moved around Weir on lap 3 to get the second spot.

Sustaire was looking inside Pritchett on lap 4, with two door to door on lap 5 at the line. Weir and Charlie Wilson got tegether in turn 2 to bring out the yellow on the same lap. On the restart it was three wide for second between Sustaire, Kirkpatrick and Chad Estes, with Estes grabbing third from Kirkpatrick.

On lap 7 Estes was trying to get inside Sustaire, while at the same time, Sustaire was getting along side Pritchett. BJ Dulock and Kirkpatrick were side by side for fourth on lap 8. Coming to halfway the top five were Pritchett, Sustaire, Estes, Dulock and Kirkpatrick. With Sustaire and Estes door to door for second.

Estes completed the pass on lap 11 as the top four began to pull away. Dulock picked off another on lap 12 snagging third from Sustaire. Estes got inside Pritchett on the front stretch, while Sustaire and Dulock ran side by side for third on lap 13.

The final six laps Pritchett and Estes squared off for a good ol’ fashioned fight to the finish. Though despite the intense battle, inches apart, the two never appeared to touch. Quite an accomplishment on a dry slick track.

Estes finally inched ahead on lap 18 down the back stretch. Pritchett tried to fight back on the final lap and with the crowd standing, announcer yelling, Estes was able to fend off Pritchett to take the victory in his Central Texas Salvage Pool/Midwest Motorsports/SRC Chassis, by a fender. The win completed the sweep for Estes, who took the Friday feature at Heart O Texas Speedway, and the main on Saturday at Kennedale Motor Speedway.

Last Lap Pass Puts Witt in Winners Circle

In the regular Modified A-main, 20 cars took the green with Justin Majek and Jason Borlace on the front row. At the start, Dale Flanagan spun in turns 1-2 and collected Trevor Egbert, Michael Carlock and Wayne Crouse, to bring about a complete restart. On the second try Majek and Borlace stayed wheel to wheel through the first corners, with Borlace getting the edge to lead lap 1.

Steve Whitaker jr got along side Majek putting him back to third, while Whitaker jr quickly grabbed the point from Borlace on lap 2. T. Egbert got past Henry Witt for fifth and ran down Danny Brown taking third from him on lap 4. Neal Flanagan brought out the yellow on lap 4 when he spun in turn 4.

Whitaker jr jumped out to good lead on the restart, leaving Borlace and Majek fighting it out for second. T. Egbert snared third from Borlace on lap 6, as Lawrence Mikulencak moved up to sixth from his eleventh starting spot. George Egbert, using the high groove got by Brown on lap 7 for the seventh spot.

T. Egbert got inside Majek for second on lap 8, at the same time Witt was grabbing fourth from Borlace. G. Egbert was still using the high side as he moved beside Mikulencak only to have yellow fly for multiple spins. Pat McGuire spun in turn 4, while Brown was lopping his ride in turn 2.

On the restart, Whitaker jr and T. Egbert got ahead as Witt tried the high side on Majek for third.

At halfway it was Whitaker jr, T. Egbert, Majek, Witt with Borlace and Mikulencak side by side for fifth. T. Egbert chances of a top spot went away when he spun himself out on lap 11. Back under green Whitaker jr and Witt pulled away, while Mikulencak moved past Majek for third.

Witt began to take peeks inside Whitaker jr on lap 13, but Whitaker would outrun him down the straights. Borlace got past Majek for fourth, but both got high-sided by G. Egbert on lap 14 whop zoomed by both. Majek got into the back of Borlace, who half spun and stopped to bring out a yellow. Under caution the two exchanged insurance cars, among other things, before Borlace pitted with a flat.

Once back to green Whitaker jr and Witt continued their personal battle for the lead. They were side by side on lap 16, with Witt getting the nose ahead at the start of lap 17. But Crouse found the turn 4 tire wall to bring out the yellow. Going back a lap put Whitaker jr back on point. Just as Witt snagged the lead on the restart, N. Flanagan spun in turn 4, with Majek spinning behind him. Once again, Whitaker got the ‘Lucky Dog Pass” back to the lead.

This time Whitaker jr was able to hold off Witt as green flew again, but after another lap was completed, McGuire and Bill Pittaway spun to set up a green, white, checker finish. On the restart Whitaker jr and Witt were wheel to wheel for the lead, with G. Egbert and Mikulencak side by side for third.

Coming to take the white flag Witt got the advantage. Whitaker jr tried to retake the spot in turns1-2, but Witt held off the challenges of the younger Whitaker and took the checkers by a car length in his Dick Scott Ford/Centax GMC/Affiliated Auto Glass/Midwest Motorsports/Slideracing.com/Bartell Motorsports/Danz Designs/Fastshafts/Allied Racing Wheels/Wilson Chassis Co./Superior Race Fuels/Hoffman Chassis. The win was the third of the weekend for Witt, who missed the sweep by one position after finishing second in the make up race.
