Public Relations Davis, Larson head All-Star Modified Invitational field BOONE, Iowa (Aug. 10) – Bill Davis Sr. and Wayne Larson head up the Who’s Who listing of I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified drivers who will take to the track for the All-Star Invitational Friday night, Sept. 10 during the I.M.C.A. Speedway Motors Super Nationals. Davis, from Des Moines, topped fan voting for the 10-car field, being named on 795 of the 2,541 ballots cast. Larson, who hails from Ames, was second with 759 votes. Completing the top 10 are four-time national champion Johnny Saathoff of Beatrice, Neb. (731 votes), Rick Stout of Stanton, Mich. (727), Henry Witt Jr. of Waco, Texas (723), Ricky Stephan of South Sioux, City, Neb. (719), Rex Merritt of Clever, Mo. (712), three-time Super Nationals king Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn. (698), Kevin Larkins of Greenwood, Neb. (673) and career wins leader David Murray Jr. of Oberlin, Kan. (653). Combined, the drivers in the All-Star starting grid own nearly 1,600 career wins and 105 local track titles, along with 11 national crowns, five Super Nationals titles and 10 Dirt Works Ron Efkamp Memorial Race of Champion victories. Most are expected to compete throughout the week of Super Nationals at Boone Speedway and none are strangers to Saturday night’s big dance. The 10 All-Star drivers own a collective 68 appearances in the Modified main event. The All-Star Invitational will be 10 laps and the winner earns a $1,000 share of the $5,500 purse. “The response we have received surrounding this event has been overwhelming. The field is truly an all-star field and the only race that I know of where the fans have literally chosen the race they want to see,” I.M.C.A. Marketing Director Kevin Yoder said. “Based on the success of this year’s balloting,we fully intend to publish a ballot beginning next May for the 2005 All-Star Invitational with a completely new list of drivers based on their successes this season.” The starting grid for the All-Star race, to be in held in observance of the 25th anniversary season of I.M.C.A.’s Modi-fied division, was elected from a slate of 47 drivers who had won national or Super Nationals championships, 100 or more weekly features, 10 or more local track titles and/or the Dirt Works Ron Efkamp Memorial Race of Champions. Voting began in May and continued ‘til Aug. 6. Davis won back-to-back national championships in 1989-90 and has 151 career wins. Larson was Super Nationals champion in 1987 and 1990, the 1991 national champ and has 143 career victories. Saathoff was I.M.C.A.’s national champion from 1996-1999 and had 239 wins going into the past weekend. Stout, the ‘95 national champ, owns 148 wins. Witt topped the 2000 national standings and has 194 career checkers. Stephan has 64 wins and 10 career track titles. Merritt’s career totals include 91 wins and a dozen track crowns. Noble has 104 wins, in addition to his 1988, 1994 and 1997 Super Nationals championships. Larkins has 144 career wins and 16 local track championships. Murray became the first driver in I.M.C.A.’s modern era to reach 300 career wins last month. The national champion in 2001 and 2003, Murray is the current points leader and has 302 wins and 12 track championships to his credit.
