rebelracewriter
Texas Thunder Speedway 7/31/04 Atwood With A-1 Outing David Smith II and Doug Lorenz started on the front row of the 20 lap IMCA Modified A-main on the 1/4 mile high-banked clay track, after Chris Renagar elected to move to the back. The young Smith jumped into the lead going into turn 1, while Ben Ketteman and Gregg Killingsworth were door to door for fourth. Team Tomastik, Greg Atwood and Keith White , began their charges towards the front getting by Killingsworth. Ketteman grabbed third from Allen Waltermire on lap 2 and was looking inside Lorenz for second when caution flew for the stalled out car of Renagar in turn 3. On the restart, it was three wide for second between Lorenz, Waltermire and Ketteman. Coming out of turn 2, Ketteman did a ½ spin and stopped to bring out yellow again. The next try saw Atwood get by Lorenz and Waltermire for second. Waltermire fought back with the two wheel to wheel on lap 4. The track took its toll on the leader, Smith as he suffered a flat left rear on lap 5 and pulled off. This gave the lead over to Atwood, with White moving up into second. Yellow waved on lap 6 when David Cooke and Killingsworth spun battling for fifth. As green came out Atwood and White were side by side for the lead, with Lorenz and Ken Old door to door for fourth. The lead duo were tied together at the rub rails with White getting the nose ahead on lap 7. Bo Phelan brought out the yellow on lap 8 when he looped his ride. White and Atwood got away from the pack back under green , while Ketteman worked his way back up(from the tail) to sixth as he got by Rick Green. Old got along side Waltermire for third on lap 9, but couldn’t complete the pass. At the crossed flags it was White, Atwood, Waltermire, Old, with Lorenz and Ketteman side by side for fifth. On lap 11, the current track points leader, White had the fuel pump belt come off and slowed, handing the lead back to Atwood, as Old and Ketteman got past Waltermire for second and third. White was unable to make it to the pit exit and rolled to a stop to bring out the yellow. White was pushed to the pits, but rejoined the field before green flew again. On the restart, Killingsworth broke the right front suspension ending his chance at a top five finish. Ketteman and Old began a door banging, paint swapping battle for second once back to green, giving Atwood a chance to get a ten car length lead with five to go. White, in the meantime was charging back through the field making his way up to seventh. Ketteman and Old were still at it on lap 16 when yellow flew for Cooke, who stopped on track, setting up a four lap shoot-out to the finish. Atwood quickly got a four car length jump on green, with White snagging fifth from Waltermire. Ketteman and Old resumed their own personal fight for the runner-up spot on lap 17, with Ketteman finally completing the pass. Ketteman closed in on Atwood with two to go. As the white flag waved, Ketteman tried a dive bomb move into turn 1, but slid up the track coming out of turn 2 allowing Atwood to get a little breathing room. As the checkers flew it was Atwood in the Accent Plumbing/Pflugerville Machine/Christine Bates-Caldwell Banker/McDermitt Tavern/Nightmare Graphix/Silver Wings Saloon/Qwik Chassis taking his first win of the year. Atwood said, “I was happy to finally get the first win out of the way.” Teammate, White joked, “He(Atwood) had my car all week and I think he had something to do with it breaking, so he could win.” IMCA Modified Pos/Car#/Driver/Start 1 23 Greg Atwood (6) 2 37 Ben Ketteman (7) 3 52 Ken Old (11) 4 1w Keith White (8) 5 44 Allen Waltermire (4) 6 97 Doug Lorenz (2) 7 119 Wayne Walker (20) 8 63 Hardy Henderson (9) 9 7 Casey Hobson (12) 10 5M Marc Beltz (10) 11 43 Tommy Clark (18) 12 19 George Lamphere (15) 13 123 David Cooke (21) 14 56 Gregg Killingsworth (3) 15 9 Pat McGuire (5) 16 28 Neil Floyd (17) 17 715/6M JP Dowell (22) 18 48 Bo Phelan (19) 19 711 Jason Bernal (13) 20 703 David Smith II (1) 21 71 Glen Derks II (16) 22 2 Chris Renagar (23) Rick Green(originally finished 4th) –DQ Claimed by Allen Waltermire, originally accepted, then refused claim. Smith, White and Atwood scored heat wins. You could tell by the start of the IMCA Stock feature that it was a full moon. 17 cars took the green paced by Chris Simmerman and Eric Jones. On the first attempt, Billy Lorenz spun in turn 3 and collected his brother Doug. (Ooops!) The second try was even uglier as Cham Savage got tapped by Richard Riley and spun collected Anthony Otken, Buck Owens, Jason Bogard and D. Lorenz. Finally the third time was a charm as Jones got out into the lead, with Chad Estes jumping from the fourth row to second. On lap 1 it was four wide for the sixth spot as the field sorted out. Jones, Estes, Trace Crawford and Chris Ochoa began to break away by lap 2 as Justin McGehee broke out of the wolfpack for fifth. At halfway the top five remained static, with McGehee trailing smoke. McGehee looked to have rear end shift over causing a tire rub. Chris Moore then grabbed the fifth spot after battling with Bogard on lap 9. As the leader got caught in traffic, Estes was looking inside Jones for the lead just as caution flew when Riley and McGehee got together in turn 3. Jones and Estes got the jump on green, while Crawford, Bogard and Ochoa battled for third. Jones started to inch away from Estes when yellow waved for spin by Ray Tinkey on lap 12. Jones and Estes again got a good advantage as Crawford and Bogard were slowed by a lap car in the group. Estes closed on Jones in the final lap but while trying a bold move in turns1-2, slid off the back stretch, losing several spots. At the finish it was Jones taking the win in the car sponsored by Central Texas Wendys/Dannys Transmissions/Do-Rite Wrecking. In the final, Crawford got the lead on lap 1, but Jones trying for a clean sweep fought back on lap 2. Jones dove low coming out turn 4 with the crossing the line side by side. Crawford snared the victory by a bumper in the CB Limited/Kryptonite Chassis Jones, Estes and C. Simmerman all took top honors in heat races. The Street Stock feature turned into a Simmerman family battle for the win. Joe Fuller lead lap 1, but after a restart got passed by Andrew Simmerman on lap 2. Robert Simmerman moved into second and the duo quickly put some distance on the field. Ty Hawkey was forced to work his way back up after having to restart at the tail, grabbing fifth after halfway. The two Simmermans were nose to tail as the checkers waved, with points leader, Andrew, snagging the top spot. Michael Legore got the point at the start of the 15 lap Thunder Stock main. Robin Rasmussen tried low on Legore for the lead, but fell back in line. Jeff Medlock, on a roll the past few weeks, got by Rasmussen then took the lead from Legore on lap 8 while five cars battled for the third spot. The only caution came on lap 10 when Danny Dunn and Tracey Cole spun during a four wide battle for sixth. Medlock grabbed a big lead on green and cruised on to grab the victory. Larry Ware was trying low on Shipman, while Bill Siegman was trying the high side. Shipler and Siegman made contact with Siegman spinning out the pit entrance. L. Ware got the lead on the restart as Billy White closed in. White was looking inside on lap 10 and the two were door to door on lap 11, with Guy Frederick reeling them in. White got top spot on lap 12, while Kenny Ware made a bonzai pass on L. Ware and Frederick.. K. Ware and Frederick made slight contact, with Frederick sliding over the hill in turn 3 and L. Ware spinning on lap 13. Under caution, L. Ware gave K. Ware a shove under yellow pushing K. Ware into Joseph Gregoire, an innocent bystander, with both going over the hill in turn 2.
