13-Year-Old Hailee Marcx Gets First Win in Front Runners; "Team Hilla" Husband and Wife Win Heats; Dinsmore Tops Mods

Pleasanton – Thirteen-year-old Hailee Marcx got her first win in the Front Runner class, holding off defending champion Nick Hencey at I-37 Raceway at Newsome Motor Park Saturday night to beat all the adults to the line. And, as the saying goes, "the crowd went wild." Hailee has been getting better each race, beginning with her first season last year, and last weekend was easily her best run: smooth, fast and not letting anyone intimidate her. She'll be a factor in the points chase.

Meanwhile, Janel Hilla was involved in another history-making event at I-37 as she and husband Dennis (the man behind the cars) both won their heat races, Dennis in Street Stock and Janel in Pure Stock, a "first" for the track.

Greg Dinsmore may still be dominating the IMCA Modified class, but it seems to be getting tougher all the time. This week he battled early with Jamie Campbell and then took several laps running down defending track champion Bill Pittaway before taking the lead and eventually pulling out a safe lead at the checkers for his fourth win of the season.

The IMCA Southern Sports Mods saw another defending champion, Johnny Torres of Lakehills, get another win as he held off Ray Doyon, the always-a-factor Moe VanKirk and veterans Larry Jernigan and Randy Yount. As a point of information, VanKirk always wants to win. Second and third-place finishes don't do it for him. Stay tuned.

Dinsmore has been driving Gary Hunter's backup car in the Limited Late Model class, but this week returned it to Hunter, resulting in another popular first time winner. No, not Hunter, as the former champion finished fifth, but Andrew Hesler, who held off the veterans (You realize, of course, that "veteran" means "old?") to get his first win, another popular outcome. Hesler finished ahead of Trey Votion, defending champ Richard Bartosh and Craig Crawley.

The Street Stocks are growing, which means an ever-changing cast of characters, often arranged in different order. This week the two A. J.s, Dancer and Wernette, bracketed defending champ Wade Jones of Jourdanton. Wernette actually led for the first half of the race until Dancer got by in his El Camino (yes, you read that right) to take the lead. They would finish in that order, with Dennis Hilla fourth and Tommy Casey fifth.

The usual herd of Pure Stocks, 19 strong, showed up on Saturday with the addition of Patricia Lucas making it three women in the Pure Stock class (Don't bet against Hailee Marcx moving up to Pure Stock next season, either.)

Frank Okruhlik got the win this week and Hilla took a wild ride through the infield at the beginning, but came back strong after a bobble in turn two (if you can't get through turn two correctly at I-37, you'll have problems) and finished third behind Justin Henley.

Four women started the Front Runner race, which is at about a dozen cars and growing, with Hailee Marcz racing with Nick Hencey for most of the race and then holding him off for the last several laps after the field was bunched back up due to a late-race caution (drivers leading races hate that).

The Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas brought 15 cars and put on their usual wild show inhjalf-scale1930s replica cars powered by motorcycle engines. Billy Groff got the early lead but it was Rusty Young who got the win, holding off defending champion Arden Vikre. Vikre, who also won two titles in 2007 and 2008) started in the back third of the field and raced to second place but couldn't get by Young.

This Saturday, April 23, it won't be just the motorcycle engines at I-37. The track is bringing in the Vintage Dirt track Racing Association to run the fourth race of the VDTRA National series. There will be no race cars on April 23, but the admission for spectators will be the same as the exciting VDTRA flat-track motorcycles are a wild show on a dirt track. (The track will race cars again on April 30.) Remember, the track is not just inexpensive entertainment; it is within inexpensive driving distance of Pleasanton, Atascosa County and South San Antonio.
