Kick Off Classic @ San Antonio Raceway 2/18-20, 2011

By J M Hallas

Marion, Tx.,(Feb 19th, 2011) As kind as Mother Nature was Friday night to San Antonio Raceway's Kick Off Classic, with nearly ideal conditions for horsepower, Saturday was a true reminder of who is really in charge. Dreary, drizzly, foggy conditions started the day and had all but stopped prompting track crews to go to work getting the surface ready to race. After nearly two hours of progress, the drizzle returned putting another set back into the days events. After a couple hours delay the sun began to peek through and with the breeze and track crew the surface was finally ready for racing.

Once time trials began the track surface came around for the Electronics class with numerous drivers cutting double lights, while the Footbrake class searched for track set up. Today's eliminations would be akin to double eliminations with drivers in the Electronics and Footbrake divisions having two chances to run, plus the old standby "buy back." Thus giving anyone that wanted up to four chances to make it to the finals.

Electronics

The Electronics final was relatively anti-climatic as both drivers, in semi-wounded cars after a grueling day, opted not to run and split the prize money. In the semi finals Bart Nelson caught a break when Ricky Kay went red. Nelson launched then quickly shut off. Donny Burleson was fortunate enough to have a bye run as his car made its way to the line on the tow rope. Burleson staged, waited on green and the car went silent. Burleson refired, broke the beams and was awarded the win after his two foot long pass.
