By J M Hallas

Pleasanton, Tx.,(Oct. 22Nd, 2010) I-37 Raceway hosted the 3rd Annual 1000 Buck Shootout on th ¼ mile, semi-banked clay oval for the first of two nights worth of racing action. “Full moon” racing can always be an adventure, but Friday night's action was considerably tame with only a couple major incidents.

Friday's action included heats and 30-lap features for the Street Stocks and Pure Stocks, a heat and trophy dash for the Front runners, and heats plus an A-Qualifier for the Southern Sportmods.

The Sportmods, sponsored by Boehle Signs & Graphics, had heat winners all automatically transfer to Saturday night's A-main along with the top two from the A-Qualifier, locking in six cars for the big show.

Saturday's event with have the Sportmods running to fill the field for the 30-lap A-Main along with the Modifieds and Tator Plumbing Limited Models in heat and feature action, Go-Karts, capping off the season with a 50-lap Front Runner Enduro.

Myers Motors to Sportmod Qualifier Checkers

Corpus Christi's James Myers wired the Southern Sportmod field in the 15-lap A-Main qualifier that locked in the top two for Saturday nights finale. Myers was chased early by Jesse James, then Ray Doyon III in the latter stages. Myers held off Doyon after a late race caution to put his new Express Racecar Chassis into tomorrow's field.

Myers led the 17-car field into turn 1, with Randy Yount and James side by side for second. A multi-car tangle at the back of the pack brought out an early caution that saw Larry Jernigan end up on his roof at the entrance to pit road as the field slowed on the back stretch. On the complete restart Myers powered out of turn 2 with the lead trailed by James, with Yount and Greg Rohmer side by side for third.

Rohmer grabbed the spot leaving Yount battling with Doyon and track champ, Johnny Torres. Rohmer was looking inside James on lap 3, while Doyon and Torres were wheel to wheel for fourth. Rohmer slipped coming off turn 2 giving Doyon a run to snag third on lap 4. Robby Minten brought out a yellow on lap 5 when he went around in turn 4.

Once back to green Myers eased away from James who had Doyon looking inside. As the duo ran side by side for second, Torres had Yount along side in the fight for fifth. Bill Pittaway joined the scrum for fifth as they tried three wide on lap 7. After several laps Doyon was finally able to inch ahead of James for second while Pittaway moved into the top five.

James spun from third on lap 10 and collected Chris Swenson who checked out for a possible foot injury. Swenson rode off with his damaged mount and was checked in the pits. On the restart, Doyon dove under Myers in turn 1, but Myers carried the momentum off the top side to retain the point. Pittaway had to retake the position from Yount after the yellow put him back on the restart.

Pittaway then put the heat on Rohmer for third, with Brian Rye getting around Yount for fourth on lap 12. With two to go, Myers had put a little distance on Doyon, while Pittaway continued to pressure Rohmer. At the finish it was Myers and Doyon moving on to the main Saturday night, with Rohmer holding off Pittaway for third.

Jubilant Jones Caps Off Street Stock Season

Always having one the largest contingents of people in the Winners Circle Wade Jones, and crew capped off his championship season win yet another victory. Jones took over the top spot from early leader Dennis Hilla, who then pitted with a flat. Jones then held off Tony Blankenship going on to the checkers.

With $300 added to the pay out, four Pure Stock tagged the tail of the field making a huge starting field for the 30-lap feature. Hilla jumped out to the lead in turn 1 while Jones got loose off turn 2 giving up spots to Greg Lackey, Chris Shafer and Blankenship. Jones had just gotten past Blankenship when Shafer spun himself from third on lap 1. Once back to green Jones was able complete the pass on Blankenship, while Mike Lyon took fourth from Lackey.

Jones quickly began to pressure Hilla for the lead, with Brian King and Justin Henley side by side for sixth. Jones got along side Hilla as they battled door to door for a lap before Jones secured the top spot on lap 5 and King took fifth from Lackey. Hilla and Lyon made contact as they went three wide around a lapped car. In the pack AJ Wernette broke something in the right front sending him over the hill in turn 2 for a lap 6 caution. Hilla pitted under yellow for repairs.

On the restart Jones got a good jump on Lyon, who was challenged by Blankenship and got the spot on lap 7. Tommy Casey moved into the top five getting by Lackey and Henley. Henley followed Casey past Lackey, as Lyon spun from third, but continued without caution. By lap 10 Shafer, after his spin and Robert Danielson were working their way up from the back to sixth and eighth, respectively. Just as the race had settled in to a mid-race pace, TJ Sullivan broke axle to bring out a yellow on lap 16.

Jones once again got away clean on the restart, with Henley taking third from Casey. King then got by Casey for fourth as he got picked by a lapped car on lap 20. Casey fought back retaking the position on lap 23. With five to go Jones had inched away to a comfortable margin over Blankenship and Henley, while Casey, King, Shafer and Danielson were battling for fourth. Lyon rebounding from his spin and Danny Schroat caught that quartet as they ran up on lapped traffic.

Lyon, Shafer and Danielson went three wide as they diced through slower cars with 3 laps to go. Shafer made contact with one of the lappers jumping wheels and ending up with a flat tire. Back up front Jones, as usual, had it on cruise control taking the white flag with Blankenship nowhere in sight. Jones in the Opiela Mechanical, Mission Racing, SABFI, Jeff's Auto Rebuilders, Camaro easily took the checkers ahead on Blankenship who held off Henley for the runner-up spot.

Okruhlik Outruns Pure Stock Field For Win

Pure Stock points runner up, Frank Okruhlik looked like a man a mission during the 21-car, 30-lap Pure Stock feature. Okruhlik wasted little time getting to the point then built a huge lead before several late cautions rebunched the field. Okruhlik's nearest competitors were veteran Charlie Henley and last years Shootout winner, Anthony Gordon.

Henley and Devin Adler stayed side by side into turn 1 with Adler getting the edge out of turn 2 to lead the first circuit. Janel Hilla moved into second with Henley door to door with Okruhlik. Hilla, Henley and Okruhlik went three abreast for second on lap 1. Henley and Okruhlik continued their battle on lap 2 before Okruhlik secured the spot and was challenging Adler for the lead.

Okruhlik got the top spot on lap 3 while Aaron Leddy moved up to fifth. Henley got by Adler for second on lap 4 as Leddy picked off Hilla for fourth. As Okruhlik set sail out front, Henley had a gap back to Adler, Leddy, Hilla, Brent Reeves, James Aramendia and Cody Leonard, all in a pack fighting for third. Lynn Hardy, driving the championship car of Marc Roy, joined that battle on lap 6.

Leddy took third from Hilla while Brandy Ramzinski and Gordon joined the free-for-all making a nine car pack. By halfway Okruhlik had built a half track lead over Henley who was being reeled in Leddy after breaking out the wolf pack. Reeves and Ramzinski tangled in turn 4 on lap 18, with Gordon shooting by both for fifth. The races first caution finally flew on lap 20 when Philip Haywood rolled to a stop in turn 1.

Okruhlik quickly motored away on the restart while Gordon worked past Hilla for fourth. Gordon then got by Leddy and was challenging Henley when he spun. David Sevilla spun to avoid Gordon bringing out a caution on lap 21. Okruhlik again jumped out on green with Gordon quickly back to fifth after the lead lap cars were put ahead of the lappers. With five to go Leddy, running third, slammed the turn 4 tire barrier and wall to bring out a red. Leddy was alright, but the car was heavily damaged.

As the race went back to green, Okruhlik easily got away from Henley, while Gordon ducked under Hilla for third. Gordon got the spot and moved beside Henley for second. Gordon took second from Henley with three to go, but found himself a half straightaway behind Okruhlik. Okruhlik in the Odie Racing, Ximenex Trucking, Chevy, went unchallenged to the victory.
