Texas Super Racing Series @ Thunder Hill Raceway 4-5-03

By J M Hallas

Pollard takes flag to flag win.

Kyle Texas. The second round for the new TSRS class started the 75 lap feature with Jeff Pollard and Ryan Engelhardt pacing the 23 car field to green. Pollard quickly jumped into the lead as Engelhardt fell back to fourth. “Stormin” Steve Sims’ chances of a repeat win came to an end on lap 2 when he got spun by JD Dusek. As Sims spun he backed into Robert Barker, tearing the rear end out of Barkers car. Jamie Fuller and Robert Stewart were also caught up in the tangle. Sims was able to continue after pitting, but Barker was done for the night.

Once back to green, the top three of Pollard, Todd McLemore and Brad Hudek, put some distance on fourth place. On lap 17 the lead pack caught traffic, with McLemore and Hudek going three wide around a lap car. Hudek trying the high side pulled even with Pollard on lap 23, but fell back in line, unable to make the pass. Lap 28 saw the yellow fly for the hood of Fuller’s car laying on the track.

On the restart Hudek got under McLemore to snatch second place, McLemore then started to fade. As the crossed flags were shown it was Pollard, Hudek, Engelhardt, Mike Yale and Tommy Gural in the top five. Pollard held a 10 car length advantage, over Hudek, while third through sixth were nose to tail, with Ronny New joining that battle.

Lloyd Alexander spun on lap 48 to slow the action and bunch the field, McLemore pitted during the yellow. Once back to racing, the top six stayed glued together until Pollard started to edge ahead. Two quick cautions came on laps 52 and 67 for spins by Beau Bukowski and Alexander, respectively. The race restarted with 5 laps to go and Pollard getting a small gap on Hudek at the green. Pollard continued to ease ahead to an eight car length gap as the white flag flew. As the checkers fell it was Pollard in his DC Eagle Paint and Body/KAM Racing Engines/ Polydyn/DB Motorsports Chassis rolling into victory lane.

Pollard, who was one of the founders of the Space City 125 held at Houston Motor Speedway, thanked his crew of Jason, James and Andy, without who’s hard work this wouldn’t be possible. Pollard said, “ He liked the new series because it gave him the chance to race for a points championship, which he and the other Houston area racers haven’t been able to do since 1999" (When Houston Speedway pulled the plug on full size stock car racing.) He added, “We always liked coming to Thunder Hill and the Calloway’s/THR welcomed us with open arms.” “ But it was impossible to make the trip every weekend.” “This series give the working man a chance, those that can’t put 60 hours/week into racing and 40 hours/week into working a job”
