rebelracewriter Posted October 12, 2010 Report Share Posted October 12, 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Saturday, October 9, 2010 Mather, Toot, Carter, Hovden kings of 24th Annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge presented by Budweiser OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Oct. 9) – Another field of top-shelf drivers returned for the second day of the 24th Annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge presented by Budweiser on Saturday as sunny skies and mild October temperatures again greeted competitors and fans for the season-ending event at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Oskaloosa’s Cayden Carter dominated the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mod feature, leading all 20 laps en route to a $2,000 payday. The 14-year-old started on the pole position alongside Chad Louk and built nearly a straight-away lead by lap 3. Tenth-place starter and reigning track champion Tyler Groenendyk drove under Louk for the second position, but his efforts were all for not as the caution flew on lap 5 for an incident deep in the field. As Carter paced the field back to the green flag, Groenendyk wheeled his way into the second and appeared to be making up ground on the leader. A caution with four laps remaining slashed Carter’s lead, but the youngster was able to stay in control and finish off the year in victory lane in front of delighted family and fans. Groenendyk settled for second, followed by Scott Van Buskirk, Scott Davis and Jason Schlangen. Up next, the ‘Mahaska County Monster’ set the stage for the final Musco USRA Modified feature of the season. A pair of #3 Skyrocket Chassis paced the field to the green flag with nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock on the outside of polesitter Colt Mather of Webster, who was driving Shryock’s back-up car. Shryock denied Mather’s attempt to lead the first lap while Matt Dotson captured the second position from Mather. Dotson began battling for the lead, diving underneath Shryock in the corners but Shryock was able to power his way back by Dotson in the straight-aways. As the field approached lapped traffic with 16 circuits remaining, Dotson used the lapped cars to make a three-wide battle for the lead before the caution flew with 14 laps to go. Just four laps later, a melee on the front-stretch involving seven cars brought out the caution once again. On the restart, Shryock jumped to an early lead as the field stacked up three- and four-wide behind him. It appeared Shryock was on his way to victory lane until a caution reappeared with eight to go. As the field made their way around for the restart, the crowd was awed by the disappearance of Shryock as he fell victim to a fuel pump malfunction, ending his evening. The absence of Shryock from the field opened the door for Mather, who captured the top spot and led the remaining circuits to pick up the biggest win of his career. Dotson, who ran in the top three the entire event, retired with three laps remaining with mechanical problems. Jake Neal finished second, followed by Corey Dripps, Bruce Hanford and Brandon Banks. Chris Hovden of Cresco triumphed in the USRA Hobby Stock feature to capture the $2,000 top prize and his second straight ‘Fall Challenge’ trophy. 2010 USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car track champion and former USRA Hobby Stock National Champion Nathan Wood made him work for the victory, however, as he battled Hovden on the top of the race track with less than 10 laps remaining. Ryan Vicker was able to take second away from Wood at the end while 14th-place starter Shane Klaassen and Jason Kohl rounded out the top-5. Darin Toot of Albert Lea, Minn., was victorious in the $2,000-to-win USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car division, surviving the caution-plagued feature that ended with the third- through sixth-place finishers piled up in turns 1-2 after taking the checkered flag. The final 10 laps proved to be some of the best racing action all night, with three-wide racing throughout the field. A caution with five to go set the stage for a shootout. Bryan Webb was on the bumper of the leader the last lap, and he was able to make one last move to capture the lead on the front straight-away. The three-wide race for the lead ended with Toot – the promoter of the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn. – victorious while Matt Greiner and Webb made contact. As they entered the turn after taking the checkered, fourth-place finisher Lynn Panos, fifth-place Steve Jackson, sixth-place Mike Pruitt and Webb, who ended up on his roof, crashed and came to a stop on the track. Saturday’s event put the wraps on an historic and memorable 2010 season at the Southern Iowa Speedway.
