Franz Wins NCRA Modified Season Finale

Powers Garners First Career Series Championship

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 09, 2010 - Brian Franz continued his domination of 81 Speedway has he picked up the lead early, then cruised to yet another O’Reilly/NCRA modified north feature victory in Park City, Kansas on Saturday night during the tracks annual running of the “Wix Filters/Bumper to Bumper Fall Classic.” But the real story of the final event on the 2010 race schedule was that long-time series veteran Brian Powers picked up his first career series championship in thirteen years of trying.

Powers and Franz started on the front row for the twenty-five lap feature with Franz jumping out into the lead as the green flag fell. Only one lap was complete when the first of three caution flags fell when Kirk Coleman came to a stop entering turn one.

Powers got a good jump on the restart and held a three car length advantage over Franz before the former five time series champion began to make his move on early lap four. Entering turns three and four, Franz got underneath the leader and over took the top spot coming down the front stretch. Franz would open up to a ten car length advantage throughout the event, withstood two cautions later in the feature and go on to collect his second series victory of the season and 32nd of his career aboard the Shadow Racing Engines powered Billsbuilt chassis.

Sixth starting Greg Stephens made his way towards the front around the races midway point and survived a four car battle between Powers, Bill Siemers, series rookie of the year Tyler Davis and Brent Burkhart throughout the middle portions of the event to come home second. Davis capped off a successful rookie season on the O’Reilly National Championship Racing Association to finish third and garnish rookie of the year honors with Siemers coming home fifth.

But the story of the night was Powers first ever series championship after being a series mainstay from back when the division held its first event thirteen years ago. After battling for the lead in the early portions of the event, Powers, aboard the KBS powered Hoffman Race Car chassis took a conservative approach later in the race and would finish fourth. It was his sixth top five finish in the six events that were held this season. This, coupled with his fourth heat race victory earlier in the evening helped propel him to his first series championship. He also won the 81 Speedway season track championship, a feat that had never been accomplished. Powers will be officially crowned series champion at the yearend banquet, to be held on Saturday night, January 29, 2011.

2008 series champion Marc Hurd, who came into the event second in the point standings, made a valiant effort for his second career series championship. Hurd had to transfer out of the “B” feature just to make the finale. The 2010 feature win leader with the series then started fifteenth in the “A” and would come home with a strong sixth place finish.

The ten, eight lap heat races for the 35 cars were won by Franz, Powers, Siemers and Davis while Kevin Newell took home the eight lap “C” feature. It was a start the alphabet climb as he would then compete in the “B” feature where he would finish ninth and transfer into the finale. His run would end with a sixteenth place finish in the season finale.
