Johnson Sweeps Southern Modifieds at Enid

by John Rittenoure

Enid, Oklahoma (September 26, 2010) - Travis Johnson knows his way around the Enid Speedway as well as anyone, if not better, and the competition was reminded of that during the O'Reilly NCRA Southern Modified Series show Sunday evening at the Enid Speedway. Johnson won his heat race then breezed to victory in the 20-lap main event for the second time this season. If that was not enough Johnson also came back later in the night to win the speedway's outlaw modified feature.

Johnson passed Todd Decker on lap nine then pulled away from the field to win the O'Reilly NCRA Southern Modified main for the second time in three events held at the Garfield County track so far this season. The win allowed Johnson to move from 25th to 16th in the standings.

The 24-car main event took the green with Robert Elliott driving off the pole with the lead entering turn one. But Elliott got loose up high out of turn two and Frank Graven took advantage and roared into the lead. Graven led the field for the next four laps.

However smoke was coming from the number 46 modified and on lap six Graven fell off the pace. Elliott regained the lead before the yellow waved two laps later when Cody Whitworth stalled between turns 1-2. The restart was what Johnson needed move into second followed by Todd Decker in third. On lap nine Johnson went to the high side out of turn two and took the lead away from Elliott.

"It was pretty good,"

said Johnson of the high groove where he passed for the lead. "It was a little rough but it was a pretty good track up there. I just try to drive in harder then they do and stay on it."

Johnson did just that. The many time track feature winner was starting to open up a little lead when the yellow waved on lap 11 for Joe Adams and points leader Dustin Buntin who were locked together on the backstretch. When the green waved again the red quickly came out after Shawn Jorski shot into the turn one wall, launched into the air and went into a series of flips coming down in the grass outside the track. Jorski was not hurt but his car was heavily damaged.

When the race restarted Johnson resumed his lead and opened up good lead which he held to the finish. On lap 14 Decker got by Elliott for second and Randy Sallee followed into third on the final lap. Elliott crossed the line in fifth.
