Johnson Cruises to Southern Modified Victory at Enid

by John Rittenoure

Enid, Oklahoma (August 15, 2010) - Travis Johnson has won his share of features at the Enid Speedway. In 2009 Johnson racked up 10 main event wins on the 3/8's mile oval. But last month when the O'Reilly NCRA Southern Modified Series made their first ever stop at the Garfield County Fairgrounds oval, luck was not on Johnson's side as he only registered a nineteenth place finish.

Sunday Johnson had a second chance as the O'Reilly NCRA Southern Modifieds returned and this time there were no stopping him. Johnson grabbed an early lead and set sail then survived a late race restart to record his first career NCRA victory.

The 24-car starting field took the green with young Heston Shaw jumping into the lead from his outside front row starting position. But just two laps into the race the yellow waved and that was good news for Johnson. The veteran shot into the lead on the restart and quickly pulled away. Johnson raced unchallenged until lap 16 when the yellow again waved. This closed up the field for a four-lap shootout and Johnson had no trouble pulling back out front where he stayed to the finish despite another yellow on the restart for a three-car pile-up. Series points leader Dustin Buntin had to settle for second while Todd Decker, Kyle Slader and Joe Adams rounded out the top five.

Cleo Adams led points runner-up Kevin Snow to the finish in the B main.
