National Points Leader Notches ‘Nother Win

Nick Hardcastle and Justin Majek paced the 21 car IMCA Modified field to green for the 20 lap A-main. Hardcastle was first into turn one with a three wide battle for second between Majek, National points leader Henry Witt and Tanner Whitmire. Coming out of turn 4 on lap 2, Whitmire got sideways on the high side and came down in front of the pack. Rick Green, Bill Pittaway, track points leader Danny Brown, Jimmy Phillips, Elias Anderson and Dale Flanagan all piled in, with several others scattering through the infield.

On the restart, Hardcastle led Majek, Witt, Steven Whitaker and Greg Dinsmore back to green with Witt diving low to grab second from Majek. Whitaker then moved in on Majek for third as the two dueled door to door on lap 3. The yellow waved on lap 4 for a spin by Marlin Samford.

Hardcastle got a slight lead on the restart, but Witt quickly closed back in. Witt began applying the pressure, looking inside Hardcastle coming out of turn 4 on laps 6 & 7. As the crossed flags were shown it was still Hardcastle holding off Witt, with Whitaker, Majek and Mickey Helms rounding out the top five.

The caution flew on lap 11 when Josh Tuttle and Phillips got together coming out of turn 2. As the green flew, Witt got along side Hardcastle and they were wheel to wheel for the top spot on lap 12. Witt got the bumper ahead on lap 13, as Hardcastle continued to try to fight back on the high side. Green moved back into the top five when he got around Dinsmore.

With five to go Witt was inching away on the low side while Hardcastle stayed high. Majek brought out the yellow on lap 16 when he spun from fifth. On the restart Witt got a small advantage, with Green moving in on Whitaker for third. Green tried to dive under Whitaker coming out of turn 4 but clipped an infield tire sending him up on two wheels. Green landed back on all fours with a small flash fire to bring out the caution on lap 18.

Hardcastle tried to run in on the high side of turn 1 as the green waved for the green, white, checker finish, but Witt held on and Hardcastle lost ground. Coming to the checkers it was Witt taking his second win in three starts after changing to a new Hoffman chassis last week. It was Witt’s 11th win of the season in his JR Rice Memorial Special sponsored by Centex GMC/Dick Scott Ford/Midwest Motorsports/Affiliated Auto Glass/Bartell Motorsports/Wilson Chassis Co./Allied Racing Wheels/Danz Designs.

The Texas Outlaw Modified Series ( the old Texas Super Coupes with wings) made its debut with 6 cars taking the green. Quinten Henderson jumped out to lead laps 1-2, giving way to Brian Shaw on lap 3. Shaw began to pull away and looked to be the winner, until he broke on the final lap, handing the win to his dad, Herb Shaw. (Early Fathers Day present?)

In the Limited Late Model feature, David Boggs and Dennis Hilla led the 12 car field to green. On the first try MK Wallace tried to dive low, but clipped Carl Dyer between turns 1-2. On the second try, Hilla got out front in turn 1, but caution flew again for debris as the air cleaner from Sammy Smith came flying off.

The third time was a charm with Hilla again getting ahead, and Carl Potts getting by Boggs for second. On lap 3 Howie Marx and Boggs were side by side for third, while Jason Zarbock and Smith battled door to door for fifth. Yellow flew on lap 4 when Smith spun in turn 1, and Charles Johnson spun in turn 2 collecting Ziggy Reusser.

Hilla held the point on the restart, but got loose on lap 6 giving Potts the chance to grab the lead on lap 7. Hilla’s luck went from bad to worse as he spun, moving Reusser to second. At the mid point the top five were Potts, Reusser, Tom Carlisle, Smith and Marx. Zarbock spun during lap 10 with Dyer and Boggs getting caught up.

Then things really got wild! Reusser started looking inside Potts on the restart, but Dyer stalled on track. As green flew again Carlisle jumped, literally, by both Potts and Reusser for the lead. A lap later Hilla spun to bring out the yellow. Under yellow, Carlisle was penalized two positions for jumping the previous restart, giving Potts the lead back.

As green flew again Potts and Reusser moved out quickly to a good lead, while Carlisle broke from third. With three to go Potts spun in turn 2, Reusser had nowhere to go but turn hard right. Reusser shot out off the back stretch at full speed and way out into the tullies. So far, in fact, his car wasn’t retrieved until after the races.

This handed the lead over the Zarbock as green flew for the final laps. Smith took one last shot at Zarbock for the lead as Potts and Boggs battled side by side for fifth. At the finish it was Zarbock in the Zarbocks Automotive/Portable Welding Service/Hudgeons Paint & Body/2000 Monte Carlo taking the win

Zarbock and Hilla were heat winners.

A field of 17 Pure Stocks took the green led by Bryan Lorenz and Steve Hawkins. Hawkins was first into turn 1, while the pack slugged it out four wide behind him. Track owner, Joe Horne came out of row 3 to lead lap 1 with Justin Henley moving to second. Lap 2 saw John Kelly jr take one heckuva ride. While battling with Robin Lutholtz for fourth the two made contact. Jn. Kelly turned sideways and as he slid out the pit exit, the car dug in and rolled twice. Kelly’s brother, Jason was first on the scene as he was headed off the track with a flat. Fortunately Jn Kelly was alright.

Horne continued to hold off Henley on the restart until they ran into lap traffic. Just as Henley got by after a three wide fight by a lap car, yellow flew for a spin by Randy Borlace. The top two again pulled away under green with two and three wide battles in the pack. At halfway the top five showed Horne, Henley, David Ortiz, Phillip Cantu and Brian Coon.

Once again the leaders got caught in traffic and again Henley moved around Horne only to have caution come out, this time on lap 10 for a spin by Allen Goree. Once back under green Henley got along side Horne with the two side by side for two laps until Henley got the position on 15. From there Henley pulled away and ran off to grab the victory in his Henley Construction/Hance Auto Parts/76 Nova.

Top honors in the heats went to Henley, S Hawkins and Leonard.

In the I-37/SAS announcers challenge it was I-37's Bill “Sarge” Masom taking the lead from the outside ahead of San Antonio Speedway’s, Milton Hope. Masom led the entire five laps to get the win. The dirt/pavement challenge continues later in the season with the duo going at it again on the ½ mile paved track and perhaps a home field advantage for Hope.

hehe fun? yea sure. You have to take the bad w/ the good in any sport. This isn't the first setback I've come across in my racing career :) If you want to see fun, come on out to SAS tonite and watch me run Joe Horne's car in the Roadrunner class :)B)
