Cotrell wins from pole and from mid-pack in EQ WWMT doubleheader at Sweetwater

 

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (July 16-17) – Ryan Cotrell proved he could race from the middle of the field just as fast as he could from the front in winning both nights of the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour twinbill at Sweetwater Speedway.

 

Cotrell started on the pole Friday night and checked out on the rest of the IMCA Modified pack. He had to work even harder for the win on Saturday after advancing from his “B” feature and starting 14th in the main event.

 

Both Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying wins paid $1,000. Cotrell now owns three tour triumphs, all coming this season.

 

Completing the opening night top five were Michael Hale, Zane DeVilbiss, George Ashby Jr. and Wade Taylor.

 

Sweetwater favorite and defending series champion Justen Yeager started 12th and had some early issues with his new car before rejoining the field at the rear, then thrilled the crowd as he raced all the way up to sixth.

 

Harvey Tinnes was the hard charger, advancing 12 spots to finish in 11th.

 

After getting kayoed by an early race accident on Friday, two-time EQ WWMT king Ricky Alvarado rocketed from eighth starting to the Saturday lead in just three laps.

 

Alvarado’s bum luck returned, however, and he was forced to pit with mechanical problems.

 

Cotrell moved ahead steadily, passed DeVilbiss on lap 20 and never looked back in completing the weekend sweep.

 

Rounding out the top five were DeVilbiss, Aaron Spangler, Joe Kent and Taylor.

 

Casey Delp led the first two laps. The win gave hard charger honors to Cotrell; Don Baisch and Ashby also improved 13 positions, finishing eighth and 10th, respectively.

 

The next EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour doubleheader is at Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez, Colo., on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 13-14.
