From worst to first, GW Takes IMCA Modified win

Killeen, Texas. After missing heat race qualifying, the 2002 IMCA Modified Rookie of the Year, GW Egbert started dead last along side his cousin,2003 IMCA Modified Rookie of the Year, PJ Egbert who had car trouble in heat race action.

The 22 car, 20 lap A-Main started with Wayne Walker and Allen Waltermire on the front. The duo were still side by side in turn 1, with Waltermire winning the battle out of turn 2 to grab the lead. David Cooke got out of shape and took a trip through the infield. The ensuing back caused Ben Ketteman to stall out before the completion of lap 2.

On the restart Chuck Crowder moved into second with Ken Old on the high side grabbing third. On lap 3 Old was looking inside Crowder for second until the “big one” a la later. Crowder got sideways coming out of turn 4, Greg Dinsmore checked up with track points leader, Keith White getting into the side of him. Dinsmore drifted up the track collecting Walker as they slammed the front stretch wall. Glen Derks and Bo Phelan had nowhere to go and got together with Walker, as Phelan spun he was collected by Doug Lorenz. Fortunately all the drivers were ok after the grinding crash.

As green flew again White dove inside Old and Waltermire to snag the top spot on lap 4 with Greg Killingsworth coming through to second. On lap 5 G. Killingsworth was taking a look inside White, while Old and Waltermire were door to door for third. By lap 6 GW Egbert had moved into the top five as Old and Cooke got by a fading Waltermire.

Cooke spun from fourth to bring out the yellow at the start of lap 7. Under caution White stalled on track, after a dirt clod knocked the hot wire out of the distributer. G Killingworth led the the field back to green as the running order got was shaken up. Old, GW Egbert, Brian Killingsworth and Crowder rounded out the top five back under green.

GW Egbert quickly got around Old and was wheel to wheel with G Killingsworth for the lead on lap 8 with G Killingsworth hanging on to the point. It didn’t take White long to work back up after pitting for repairs as he grabbed fourth on lap 9. At the halfway point the top five were G Killingsworth, GW Egbert, Old White and Ketteman.

White and Old were side by side for third on lap 12 with White securing the spot. GW Egbert got along side G Killingsworth on lap 13 as the leaders ran three wide splitting the lap car of George Lamphere. The two were still tied together at the rub rails on lap 14 with GW Egbert getting the edge at the line. They were still wheel to wheel on lap 15, with GW Egbert finally getting totally around G Killingsworth on lap 16.

White closed on G Killingsworth and make the pass for second with three to go, but GW Egbert had built a ½ straightaway lead. On the final lap GW Egbert ran into traffic allowing White to close slightly but never enough to make a challenge. As the checkers flew it was GW Egbert in the Phils Paint & Body/Big Tex Autoplex/E&E Transport/Nightmare Graphics/Midwest Motorsports/Dirt Works Chassis taking the victory after starting dead last.

In the second heat Dinsmore scored his first ever modified checkers as he led flag to flag. G Killingsworth got around early leader Jason Bernal to get the heat #3 honors.

In the 15 lap IMCA Stock feature, Shad Stevens and Chris Ochoa lead the field to green with Stevens getting the advantage going into turn 1. Doug Lorenz suffered a flat left front while running third causing the pack to stack up. As Stevens and Justin McGehee pulled ahead the field was two and three wide. The yellow flew on lap 3 when Jon Neilson ½ spun and stopped in turn 1, while Nick Gabaree and Anthony Otken got together at the top of turn 3.

On the restart McGehee was pressuring Stevens for the lead on the low side while Phil Egbert moved into the top five, from his tenth starting spot. At the midpoint the top four had sepatated themselves from the field with Stevens, McGehee, Jason Batt, Richard Riley and Egbert in the top five spots.

On lap 9 Stevens and McGehee were door to door for the point as McGehee inched ahead by a nose to lead. On lap 10, the two got hooked allowing Batt and Riley get by. Just as Batt took the lead he slowed and stopped in turn 2, while Buck Owens was spinning at the other end of the track. As the race resumed, Stevens was back on the point followed by McGehee, Riley, Chris Moore and Derrick Sears.

Stevens got a good restart leaving McGehee and Riley battling for second. Riley had the left rear tire come off on lap 13, but he was able to continue. McGehee caught back up to Stevens as the white flag flew. Going into turn 3 McGehee made a bonzai move as he tried a slide job on Stevens for the lead. McGehee wasn’t quite clear as he slid up and the two made contact. Stevens tried to fight back with the duo swapping paint and sparks flying as they crossed the line with McGehee in the Smith Construction/McGehee Real Estate/Phils Paint & Body/Pflugerville Machine/ Kamikazee Chassis getting the win.
